Book excerpt: In 1970 a young dancer named Alma Guillermoprieto left New York to take a job teaching at Cuba’s National School of Dance. For six months, she worked in mirrorless studios (it was considered more revolutionary); her poorly trained but ardent students worked without them but dreamt of greatness. Yet in the midst of chronic shortages and revolutionary upheaval, Guillermoprieto found in Cuba a people whose sense of purpose touched her forever. In this electrifying memoir, Guillermoprieto–now an award-winning journalist and arguably one of our finest writers on Latin America– resurrects a time when dancers and revolutionaries seemed to occupy the same historical stage and even a floor exercise could be a profoundly political act. Exuberant and elegiac, tender and unsparing, Dancing with Cuba is a triumph of memory and feeling.

Book excerpt: The heads have stopped spinning from the variety of pieces in Lost and Found and the smoke has cleared from the hard-hitting assault of Locked and Loaded. Now comes the unveiling of a two-part pulse quickening collection of fragments from human emotion. Roses and Blood slithers through out the cracks of emotions and feelings we have all felt at one time or another. Whether it’s the warm spark of a new found love or the dying flame of a relationship torn apart. Some have even felt the sweat inducing heat of erotic lust. The roller coaster ride we go through in almost any situation when we deal with matters of the heart. Though no matter how warm and secure we may feel, we can never escape from the icy grip of fear and horror. It can freeze the warmest thought and release the restraints of a dark imagination. Where anything can be a creature and every sound becomes a haunting echo. Thoughts and images drawn from daily newspaper articles and stories that are broadcasted on the nightly news. Creepy visions created and inspired by classic horror stories and films. Personal fears we keep hidden inside ourselves that only surface when we are alone or in the dark. The chill that rips down your spine and makes you check the closet twice before going to bed. Roses and Blood will lure you in and make you feel loved and secure then, like the flip of a switch, have you feeling scared and vulnerable. So curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy. (just be sure you lock the door first)

Dancing probably originated out of a heart of gratitude. Someone long, long ago, felt something so delightful, and heart-rending that jumping, leaping and twisting the body was the only possible response. During the course of our life, we will jump and leap for many things, or in honor of some idol we hold dear; how beneficial to refocus that energy to a noble cause! This book uses the metaphor of dance to describe the majestic encounter of a life lived covered by the blood of Jesus the Christ.

They’ll stop at nothing, including calling in favors from people in high places, to force Wolf off the scent. But Wolf has friends of his own in low places. While he’s dancing on a tightrope to stay ahead of the killer, can he clear Vicky’s name in time before someone takes her—and him—out for good?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the newly thriving field of ancient Greek and Roman performance and dance studies, The Anatomy of Dance Discourse offers a fresh and original perspective on ancient perceptions of dance. Focusing on the second century CE, it provides an overview of the dance discourse of this period and explores the conceptualization of dance across an array of different texts, from Plutarch and Lucian of Samosata, to the apocryphal Acts of John, Longus, and Apuleius. The volume is divided into two Parts: while the second Part discusses ekphraseis of dance performance in prose and poetry of the Roman imperial period, the first delves more deeply into an examination of how both philosophical and literary treatments of dance interacted with other areas of cultural expression, whether language and poetry, rhetoric and art, or philosophy and religion. Its distinctive contribution lies in this juxtaposition of ancient theorizations of dance and philosophical analyses of the medium with literary depictions of dance scenes and performances, and it attends not only to the highly encoded genre of pantomime, which dominated the stage in the Roman empire, but also to acrobatic, non-representational dances. This twofold nature of dance sparked highly sophisticated reflections on the relationship between dance and meaning in the ancient world, and the volume defends the novel claim that in the imperial period it became more and more palpable that dance, unlike painting or sculpture, could be representational or not a performance of nothing but itself. It argues that dance was understood as a practice in which human beings, whether as dancers or spectators, are confronted with the irreducible reality of their own physical existence, which is constantly changing, and that its way to cognition and action is physical experience.

Lupe Wong is going to be the first female pitcher in the Major Leagues. She's also championed causes her whole young life. Some worthy...like expanding the options for race on school tests beyond just a few bubbles. And some not so much...like complaining to the BBC about the length between Doctor Who seasons. Lupe needs an A in all her classes in order to meet her favorite pitcher, Fu Li Hernandez, who's Chinacan/Mexinese just like her. So when the horror that is square dancing rears its head in gym? Obviously she's not gonna let that slide. Not since Millicent Min, Girl Genius has a debut novel introduced a character so memorably, with such humor and emotional insight. Even square dancing fans will agree...
