Book excerpt: For forty days and forty nights during the winter of 1999, three Canadians, Bruce Kirkby, Jamie Clarke, and Leigh Clarke, along with three Omani Bedu, travelled by camel across Arabia’s great southern desert – the legendary Empty Quarter. Journeying from Salala in Oman on the Arabian Sea, they headed north and east for 1,200 kilometres across remote and largely unexplored desert wilderness, where ranges of sand dunes tower to over three hundred metres in height. When they finally reached Abu Dhabi on the Persian Gulf, they were received as heroes. Theirs was the first camel crossing of the Empty Quarter in over fifty years. The expedition had historic roots, since the team sought to retrace for the first time the original 1947 crossing by world-famous explorer and adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger. In the years since Sir Wilfred’s journey, Arabia and the Bedu have faced enormous upheaval. The discovery of oil precipitated rapid and irreversible changes to a nomadic society that had existed in relative isolation since the time of Mohammed. Travelling with their three Bedu companions, the team was afforded a rare glimpse of how these changes have affected the last of the Arabian nomads. During the desert crossing the team was determined to travel and live as authentically as possible, on camels, taking Arabic names and wearing traditional clothing, drinking their water from rank goatskins and eating mainly unleavened bread and dried camel meat. The cultural insights they were afforded are constantly fascinating – but so are the cultural clashes, since the party was often followed by Land Cruisers full of well-meaning supporters who threatened to destroy the spirit of the journey. The expedition was also full of adventure and incident – such as a hundred-foot descent down a narrow, snake-infested well, a three-day sandstorm, the sting of a desert scorpion, and the challenge of living with inescapable heat and nagging dehydration. The Empty Quarter Traverse received considerable media coverage, both nationally and internationally. In nineteen countries around the world, 22,000 school children enrolled in the team’s Internet education program, and 4.8 million people visited the expedition Web site. The trek was reported widely and was the subject of a feature story on the CBC National and a front-page colour photo story in the National Post. Now Bruce Kirkby has written a thoughtful and deeply felt account of this challenging expedition – and has illustrated it with twenty-four pages of his stunning colour photographs. Anyone interested in remote areas of the world or stirred by the romance of old-fashioned adventure and daring will find Sand Dance constantly engaging.

Reviews: "Dr. Ian Hale's work is special with a variety of forms ranging from highly structured to free verse. Every word is eloquently placed to bring life and promotes deep thought. Times spent with Dr. Hale's poems are filled with little bursts of reflection." Marie Palazzolo, Chairperson Founder's Memorial Poetry Contest United Poet Laurel International Board Member "Ian hale has already shown in this book's prequel, "Emotional Exile" that he is well equipped with a deep sense of intrigue and imagery which is even stronger in these new, spellbinding poems. Both are the work of a great master of literature and emotion: one with a voice which should be heard for centuries to come like T S Eliot and John Keats. His words will take the reader past the boundaries of Utopia and on to a dizzying journey beyond "-Kenneth Cunningham (Reviewer) Weston Hall, UK. "In this superb book of poems Dr. Ian Hale explores and expands upon many of the themes he so deftly elucidated upon in Emotional Exile. Heartfelt, diverse, philosophical, but never pretentious or saccharine, Dance with the Desert is a welcome addition to any library" -Adam Alonzi. Reviewer at The Millennium Project. "These challenging new poems by Ian Hale may inspire or give pause but they are certain to have a memorable impact, as will the stunning photographs by Nea Torres, which accompany them. In this eagerly awaited second volume of his "Journeys" series, Hale spins both very bright and very dark images in an experimental mix of styles with subtle, hidden sub-texts ranging from song lyrics to quantum mechanics. Highly recommended."--PHR Literary Review

Book excerpt: 2016 Christian Book Award finalist (Bibles category) Stories of Scripture are often portrayed two-dimensionally, making people in the Bible seem familiar, predictable, even flat. We don't always read their stories with much awareness of the pressures they faced, the doubts they had, the assumptions they made, or the alternatives they have chosen. The Dancing in the Desert Devotional Bible in the New Living Translation encourages readers to take an honest look at the people in the Bible. Chris Tiegreen, author of many popular devotionals for both men and women, has written 270 devotionals that explore the lives of people in the Bible and how they faced their own life's wilderness and found meaning, significance, and purpose with God. When we keep our gaze fixed on a story bigger than our own lives, we, too, can learn to dance in even the driest of our deserts.

Book excerpt: This is a richly metaphorical adventure story of two women cast into the desert with their horses. Stumbling into a web of deceit and crime, they are spirited away in the desert darkness. Their fortuitous escape leaves them without shoes, pants, food or saddles; off track, lost to themselves and to their loved ones. They are compelled to find the truth and their way as they traverse for days through a dangerous and hostile desert environment, seemingly void of even the simple necessities of life. When circumstances beyond their control delay rescue, the women struggle to find their way to safety, overcome hardships, and survive in an unforgiving land. Meanwhile, their husbands search for them and struggle with difficulties of their own, creating a perplexing and frustrating dance of crossing paths as they circle through the desert in a seemingly futile search for their wives. Funny, passionate and complex, the story revolves around human nature and the ability to reach beyond our comfort zone in order to endure and survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where beauty is everything. Society tells us that if we just looked a certain way, if we had the right products, if we were skinny enough, then we would be enough —we would have value. Society is wrong, but it took Katie H. Willcox years to understand this: “Over the course of my 30 short years, I have both worked as a professional model and been the exact opposite of our culture’s beauty ideal. I have struggled with my weight and felt like I didn’t and never would fit in. Then I had a powerful realization: my misery and self-loathing didn’t change with my weight or how ‘pretty’ society thought I was, so my looks weren’t the source of happiness and worth that I had believed them to be. But then, what was? And how had I come to invest so much of myself in beliefs that were so untrue?” In these pages, Katie shares the lessons she learned in her journey to find the answers to these questions. She reveals who gains from our feeling small and why we need to examine the messages we receive from our culture and our families. She explains how we can redefine beauty, make healthy the new “skinny,” and harness the power of our thoughts to choose self-love. Katie encourages us to discover our true magnificent selves, find our purpose, and pursue our dreams —and help others to do the same. Join the movement! Two sisters married to the same man, now bitter rivals for his love. A family torn apart by the deception of the father, who holds the lives of all he loves in his hands. Jacob - a man who fled for his life from the brother he cheated. Leah - a woman disfigured from a childhood disease, now forced to obey her father and deceive both her sister and the man she loves. Rachel - the love of Jacob's life who waits patiently for their marriage, only to end up having to share him with her own sister. Laban - the wily old man who pulls the strings to control those he loves and those he uses. From L. M. Roth, author of Battleground: Elijah and the War With Jezebel, A Star In the Darkness, Esther and the King of Persia, and Arise My Love, the Princess Who Fell Asleep, comes a sensitive and poignant retelling of the legendary love triangle that birthed the Twelve Tribes of Israel. A Dance In the Desert, The Story of Leah, Jacob, and Rachel is a tale of yearning, heartbreak, and sibling rivalry that still evokes across the centuries the drama of a family torn apart, yet whose legacy is one of the great dynasties of history. Can they overcome the bitter jealousy that threatens to destroy them and thus receive their inheritance? Or will they only succeed in destroying each other?
