Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to create a process-oriented mother-child group therapy program for child witnesses of domestic violence using dance/movement therapy (DMT). The program reviews literature on DMT, mother and child programs, the effect of domestic violence on children through an attachment perspective, and process-oriented groups. A review of salient relational and attachment concepts as it connects to DMT and the proposed program is established. Rationale for program choices and format is rooted in the literature and was written with theoretical attachment perspective. Three therapists of differing expertise provided feedback for this program. Their input was then incorporated into a final proposed program. The discussion will focus on the decisions to include or not include feedback from the professionals, areas of strength, places of doubt limitations and risk, as well as ways to assess the program once it has been implemented.

In so doing, the traumatic experience becomes repressed, perhaps in an effort to cover up the pain that is suffered. One of the traumas that unfortunately exist is child sexual abuse. During my experience as a dance/movement therapist, it has been revealed through movement, that more than half my clients were victims of child sexual abuse. Since the sexual abuse took place on a bodily level, it was therefore contacted and acknowledged on the same level-through movement, even when the client was unable to verbalize or even recall the experience. The purpose of this study is to discover the impact that movement, more specifically, Dance/Movement Therapy has on the adolescent and how it helps him/her to regain the self-esteem that was lost as a result of being a victim of child sexual abuse.
