Book Synopsis Dance with Heaven & Earth by : Anna Sanner
Download or read book Dance with Heaven & Earth written by Anna Sanner and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts in this book are inspired by the teachings of Katsuyuki Shimamoto, 8th dan, who has been a Zen priest and aikido teacher for 50 years. the title is taken from a poem that frequently graces his calligraphies: Harmonize with others Harmonize with Heaven and Earth Dance with others Dance with Heaven and Earth Humble and congenial, Katsuyuki Shimamoto is a perpetrator of aikido as a martial art of peace that seeks to create harmony. Influenced strongly by Zen, he emphasizes good posture, calm breathing, universal acceptance, simplicity, and minimalist aesthetics. These short pieces of wisdom taken from aikido and Zen help us understand that living with others is what allows us to live at all. That the right form - including posture, field of vision, and breathing - can change not only our outlook but the outcome, too. That we can neutralize any attack once we learn to accept it. That true victory is to win against our weaknesses, and fighting only serves as a stepping stone towards harmony. That with the right approach, the very life we struggle with can turn into the greatest treasure. Photographer and designer Morteza Ariana has not only given the book a beautiful look but also contributed significantly to conveying its message by adding a visual component to its expression. His breathtaking original photographs resonate with Katsuyuki Shimamoto's sense for Zen aesthetics and clarity of communication. Every text is juxtaposed with one of these images, adding another dimension to its meaning, and often alluding to the contradictory nature of Zen teachings intended to help practitioners overcome the boundaries of reason. Get ready for a book that takes you straight to the heart of the matter. Dance with Heaven & Earth!
Download or read book Beyond Words written by Carol-Lynne Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Words presents a range of illuminating approaches to examining every day social interactions, to help the reader understand human movement in new ways. Carol-Lynne Moore and Kaoru Yamamoto build on the principles that they expertly explored in the first edition of the book, maintaining a focus on the processes of movement as opposed to discussions of static body language. The authors combine textual discussion with a new set of website-hosted video instructions to ensure that readers develop an in-depth understanding of nonverbal communication, as well as the work of its most influential analyst, Rudolf Laban. This fully-revised, extensively illustrated second edition includes a new introduction by the authors. It presents a fascinating insight into this vital field of study, and will be an invaluable resource for scholars and practitioners in many activities, from performing and martial arts, athletics, to therapeutic and spiritual practices, conflict resolution, business interactions, and intercultural relations.

Download or read book Aikido written by Nick Waites and published by Nick Waites. This book was released on 2008 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Essani, the Aikido teacher and practitioner, whose thoughts about the practice of Aikido are expressed in this book, does not actually exist - he is a fictitious character invented by the author as a means of exploring ideas. However, the training philosophy and methods attributed to Alex Essani are definitely not fictitious: they are based on the author's personal experiences with real Aikido instructors, in particular his current sensei, and on many years of practising, studying and teaching Aikido. The conversations between the two main characters, Alex Essani and his student Ian, are inventions used illustrate an important principle or concept. As the author's real Aikido teacher would put it after telling a tall story, "This is a true story; only the facts have been changed"; insofar as the author has fictionalised real incidents and conversations, this book is the same - it is fiction based on fact.In this third edition the author has replaced and improved all of the images, edited a number of chapters and added two more. He has also omitted the final part of the book, previously devoted to technique notes, as there are currently many excellent books devoted entirely to this aspect of Aikido training, including "Essential Aikido" written by the author.
Book Synopsis Aikido: The Art of Transformation by : Teja Bell
Download or read book Aikido: The Art of Transformation written by Teja Bell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Explores Nadeau’s personal journey and pioneering role in the spread of Aikido, including firsthand accounts and historical photographs published for the first time • Explains Nadeau’s unique teaching, his core concepts, and basic practices centered on energy refinement, direct experience and inner transformation • Presents inspiring personal stories about Nadeau contributed by students, including Dan Millman, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Peter Ralston, and Renée Gregorio A widely influential figure in the development of Aikido in America, Robert Nadeau is known as one of the few American direct disciples of Aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba Osensei. Now an 8th dan Aikido master teacher, Nadeau has taught generations of students, and several have become prominent teachers in their own right. However, he has never written about his life or philosophy, always reserving his most pointed lessons for those who practice with him in person. This book tells the story of Robert Nadeau’s life journey and his distinctive approach to teaching Aikido as a way to access the inner energetic aspects of the art, a transformational approach with universal applications in daily life, even for non-Aikidoists. The authors explore Nadeau’s early interest in martial arts and all things spiritual as a teenager in California in the 1950s, his seminal training under Morihei Ueshiba at Aikido Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in the 1960s, and the following six decades of training, experimenting, refining, and teaching as he worked to introduce Aikido to the wider world, even beyond the traditional dojo. They lay out Nadeau’s core concepts, describe his simple-but-effective practices for personal development, and convey his time-tested approach to the inner training at the heart of Aikido in a very accessible way. They also include first-person accounts from Nadeau’s students, including Dan Millman, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Peter Ralston, and Renée Gregorio, who recall their personal experiences of training with him, retell conversations with him, and describe insights and lessons learned, sharing how he affected their lives, sometimes quite profoundly. Bringing the story of Robert Nadeau’s life into focus, this book presents, for the first time, the profound lessons and deep impact of a pioneering teacher who’s been central to the spread of Aikido in the West.

Book Synopsis Aikido: O-Sensei’s Sublime Synthesis, Vol. 2 by : Michael DeMarco, M.A.
Download or read book Aikido: O-Sensei’s Sublime Synthesis, Vol. 2 written by Michael DeMarco, M.A. and published by Via Media Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we fully understand aikido, or any other martial art for that matter, when we have only been exposed to part of it? While learning about the art, we can easily make assumptions and be tricked by false impressions. In most cases, even instructors do not have enough background to grasp the entirety of the art and are happy to work with part of it. The content in this special two-volume anthology details the many facets of aikido as it was formulated by Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969)—O-Sensei, the great teacher. Each chapter contributes to a piece of the aikido puzzle by providing historical details, insightful technical drills (bare handed and with weapons), and components that have flavored this art with a spiritual essence. From the Ueshiba wellspring flows a number of streams—political splinter groups offering their own take on what aikido should be and how it should be practiced. Each branch may stand on its own, but a good number of scholars and practitioners prefer a more encompassing representation of what O-Sensei taught. So, chapters in these volumes help “put Humpty Dumpty back together again.” Volume I includes ten chapters and volume II another fourteen. The authors—twenty-three in all—present superb credentials as scholars and practitioners of aikido. On the academic side, you’ll find chapters that detail aikido’s philosophy, from ethical relationships and practical theory to the subtle spiritual dimension. A few authors highlight the circumstances regarding the transmission of aikido from teacher to student. Some authors show how culture influences the perception and understanding of aikido when it travels outside Japan. Aikido is often practiced as a system of body movement encompassing a philosophy of peace and harmony. Others may focus on learning the art for its effective methods of self-defense. Composed of material previously published in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts, this two-volume anthology is heavy on the technical aspects of aikido that both teachers and students would benefit by reading. Training methods are discussed in detail, supported by hundreds of illustrations of attack and defense. Whatever your primary interest is in aikido, Aikido: O-Sensei’s Sublime Synthesis will prove to be a great reference for the scholar and practitioner. We hope this convenient collection of quality material dealing with Morihei Ueshiba’s martial discipline will benefit your research and inspire the practice of this elegant art.

Download or read book Positive Aikido written by Dave Rogers and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive Aikido is available on bookshelves around the globe. This book, an in-depth look at our school''s special brand of technique, strategy, philosophy as well as unique history, took about 15 years to compile, but will soon be offered in print by the world''s leading on-demand publisher.Trafford Holdings Ltd is privately-held corporation, registered in British Columbia, Canada. There are over 120 shareholders, including many authors and all the permanent employees. It was incorporated in 1991. In late 1995, Trafford opened its doors and website. They are the first company in the world to offer an "on-demand publishing service," and they are the best. The production of "Positive Aikido" has gone through numerous stages. The hand-drawings describing each of the positive techniques in traditional Aikido were begun in 1987 with the intention of providing new students with a reference guide - at the time to be photocopied for students in the U.S. and later possibly for the U.K. students as well. That plan, however, never took hold as more and more drawings were produced. The drawings of the first four groupings were finished in 1991 and in 1993, the second four groupings were added, along with some transcripts from a recorded converstaion between Sensei Ellis and Rogers on a long roadtrip between Dallas, Texas and Alamogordo, New Mexico. Rogers made his 1st Dan during that trip, and Positive Aikido picked up a lot of its histories and background information. Still, it was no more than a shep of papers cobbled together from various sources. In 1999, however, with the advent of digital photgraphy, Rogers decided to augment the drawings with some digital photos and possibly put together a proper booklet for students in all the Ellis Schools. The photos, however, required some supporting text - and there was a lot of other material which needed to be conveyed as well. The transcripts were rewritten and cleaned up a bit and the photos were digitally processed for the first four forms. During another visit to New Mexico, Sensei and his assistant Anita Wilson along with Sensei''s son did the demonstrations needed for the last four forms. Later, the first four forms were re-shot with Sensei Rogers and one of his first U.S. students, Jeff Glaze of New Mexico.By this time, "Positive Aikido" was being developed as a book. The agent and publishers we first contacted agreed, but the material was still fairly rough. More photos were shot and extensive digital work was done on them to clarify technique. Additional sections were added to describe combat strategy and the philosophy behind "Positive Aikido". Sections on ethics and morals within the arts were developed along with material dealing with the selection of a martial art for beginners. And of course, the history section was strengthened and sharpened.Lastly, a complete reorganization of the material was accomplished with an addition of a section on pins and control and weapons (jo and sword). The finished work is comprised of more than 1000 photos, 600 hand-drawings and complex explanations and tips to make the techniques of Aikido work properly. It includes detailed writing on the "Positive" mindset as well as complete sections geared to beginners, intermediate students and advanced practitioners.Although several traditional publishers expressed interest in printing the book, and initial negotiations were entered into with one California-based company, the advent of "print-on-demand" technology and the resulting new publishing market, made for a better alternative.Of this book as it stands now, the authors say this. There are a lot of books on Martial Arts out there, and this one fits in the crowd well - but it also stands alone in the sheer comprehensiveness of the work. It is a nearly complete representation of a single school''s technique - it is a historical marker - a book of strategy - an ethical guide - a technical manual - and it is a chart, graph and manifest of all the things which make martial artisits as a whole stand together as sisters and brothers with the same warrior spirit.http://[email protected] Reviews Many publications on the subject of Aikido come and go. A majority all revolve around the same format or topics. It is unusual for a no holds book to be released. To have a warning printed on the first page, invites you in to read more! This book cannot be classed as a technical, although a whole chapter is dedicated to techniques. The main proportion of the book deals with personal interpretation of what Aikido means to the authors. It draws comparison with modern day Aikido, and the Aikido from the past; all it''s good and bad points. There is also a strong emphasis on personal history. In so many ways, it breaks the boundaries of what a traditional Aikido book is suppose to show and say! The authors are to be congratulated for a no nonsense approach, and breaching the normal concept of what is expected from a book in this category. I''m sure it will cause a great debate among different groups, which should be encouraged. Finally, if the dialogue causes the reader to cough, splutter, or even split blood; at least the cover can be easily wiped.Mr. Nigel JonesPrincipal instructor for Abertillery Aikido Club under the Amateur Martial Association. Trained under Sensei Haydn Foster, & Sensei Ron Russell at the Hut Dojo. I just received my copies of "Positive Aikido" from Trafford Publishing. The cover is excellent!. I have only skimmed though it briefly, I like the way it is laid out, I am enjoying the stories and History so far. The rest of this week, I will go through the whole book and then write a review and place it on my website to let others outside of the Aikido world know where to purchase it. Thank you for being a friend and sharing your martial spirit, it is very refreshing to know a true warrior of the martial art, and one who still practice and teach the old way while embracing the modern. Continued success, and here''s hope that all your First-Run books be sold completely out (smile)... Download or read book A Grief Like No Other written by Kathleen O'Hara and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grief Like No Other is the book no one wants to ever have to buy; sadly, many people continue to need it. From 9/11 to Cindy Sheehan's son – from mass tragedies like the recent London bombings to Law and Order type crimes that make the news only to be replaced by another name. As such, more people are left with the aftermath of dealing with the violent death of a loved one. It brings its own special brand of grieving since victim's families can spend years dealing with legal ramifications, guilt, and a myriad of other circumstances that don't accompany "normal" deaths. Kathleen O'Hara knows both sides of this coin. As a therapist, she has counseled hundreds of people dealing with grief. As a mother, she saw her worst fears realized when her college-aged son was brutally murdered in 1999. In the aftermath of Aaron's murder, O'Hara developed the seven stage journey that is at the heart of A Grief Like No Other. Although this is a book for those left behind in the aftermath of violence, it offers concrete and practical steps and stages, allowing family and friends safe passage through this incredibly harrowing journey.
