Book excerpt: In a story set in the social turmoil of the Vietnam war years, Justin Blake and Emily Bennet find their love mirrored in Renoir’s Dance at Bougival, only to have the young academic forced aside for a family favorite by Emily’s ambitious mother. Shattered, Justin joins his faculty colleague, Lindsay Daley, on a London sabbatical, where Emily soon arrives to inform him she is pregnant and get his agreement for an adoption. They go separate ways in life and marriage, holding in their hearts the moment in time Renoir inspired, until years later an unforeseen encounter provides long-sought closure to their memory.

Book excerpt: A group of young artists in 1874, in opposition to the established authority of the Salon and the Academy, decided to show their work directly to the public in an exhibition which they organized themselves. The artists forming the core of this group - Pissarro, Degas, Sisley, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir and Morisot - came to be known as "the Impressionists." Seen to be following the independent spirit of Manet, they were immediately identified as the avant-garde and their first exhibition became an historic landmark in the development of modern art. We now tend to see the landscapes of Impressionist paintings as perfect images of nature. It is easy to overlook their startling and fragmented appearance at the time they were painted. The documents in this book show how the paintings looked to contemporary eyes: to both the critics and the artists. Some of the criticism these paintings received is almost as famous as the works themselves, and several important documents appear here in English translation for the first time. The book tells the story of the personal struggles, debates, problems and solutions involved in a new way of painting that quickly led in unforeseen directions and took enormous risks with the traditional means of representing the world in art. These experiences are revealed in the letters and recorded comments of the artists themselves, and in the writings of friends and contemporary critics, many of whom, such as Baudelaire, Zola, Valery, Mallarme, Huysmans, Laforgue and Mirbeau, were also novelists and poets. The continuing interpretation of Impressionism within the changing art and art criticism of the twentieth century is examined through the writings of artists such as Leger, Kandinsky, Masson, Matisse and Hofmann as well as recent critics, philosophers and art historians including Meyer Schapiro, Gaston Bachelard, Clement Greenberg and Lawrence Gowing. The text is illustrated with 116 colour plates and 117 black and white reproductions of photographs, documents and contemporary cartoons, prints and drawings. After Harvard Martha Kapos studied painting and the history of art at the Chelsea School of Art, where she is now teaching. Her art criticism has appeared in various magazines including Artscribe, Art Monthly and Screen. A collection of poems was published in 1989 by the Many Press.

No other writer enhances the reader’s experience of art in precise, jargon-free prose as Schjeldahl does. His reviews are more essay than criticism, and he offers engaging and informative accounts of artists and their work. For more than three decades, he has written about art with Emersonian openness and clarity. A fresh perspective, an unexpected connection, a lucid gloss on a big idea awaits the reader on every page of this big, absorbing, buzzing book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberty Fund's new six-volume The Collected Works of Frederic Bastiat series, of which "The Man and the Statesman "is the first volume, may be considered the most complete edition of Bastiat's works published to date, in any country, and in any language. The main source for this translation is the seven-volume "Oeuvres completes de Frederic Bastiat," published in the 1850s and 1860s. The present volume, most of which has never before been translated into English, includes Bastiat's complete correspondence: 207 letters Bastiat wrote between 1819, when he was only 18 years old, until just a few days before his untimely death in 1850 at the age of 49. For contemporary classical liberals, Bastiat's correspondence will provide a unique window into a long-forgotten world where opposition to war and colonialism went hand-in-hand with support for free trade and deregulation. Bastiat's numerous letters to Richard Cobden, a Member of Parliament and best known today as the leader of the British Anti-Corn Law League, chronicle the profound effect the Anti-Corn League had on Bastiat. The League's success in mobilizing a popular movement in England to pressure the British government into abolishing the very protectionist "corn laws," in 1846, inspired Bastiat to emulate the League's success in France by starting his own free-trade movement. "The Man and the Statesman "also includes articles and other writings on politics and current events that showcase Bastiat's talent as a theoretician, a pamphleteer, a journalist, and a deputy (Member of Parliament) of the nascent French Second Republic. Together with the correspondence, the writings in this volume fill an important gap in our understanding of the lesser-known Bastiat, who, in just a few short years, made a profound impact on French intellectual and political life in Paris. Forthcoming titles in The Collected Works of Frederic Bastiat series include: ""The Law," "The State," and Other Political Writings, 1843-1850 Economic Sophisms and "What is Seen and What is Not Seen" Miscellaneous Works on Economics: From "Jacques-Bonhomme" to Le Journal des ""economistes Economic Harmonies The Struggle Against Protectionism: The English and French Free-Trade Movements " Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850) was born in the French port city of Bayonne and became one of the leading advocates of free markets and free trade in the mid-nineteenth century. A theorist of classical liberal political economy and an elected member of various French political bodies, he opposed both protectionism and the rise of socialist ideas. Jacques de Guenin is president of the Cercle Frederic Bastiat. He is a graduate of the ecole des Mines in Paris and holds a Master of Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. Jean-Claude Paul-Dejean is a historian from the University of Bordeaux and a Bastiat scholar. Dennis O'Keeffe is Professor of Social Science at the University of Buckingham, Buckingham, England, and is Senior Research Fellow in Education at the Institute of Economic Affairs, London. David M. Hart received a Ph.D. in history from King's College, Cambridge, and is the Director of Liberty Fund's Online Library of Liberty Project.

Book excerpt: “[An] epic account of life and loves among artists and writers in Paris from belle époque to world slump.” —William Feaver, The Spectator A legendary capital of the arts, Paris hosted some of the most legendary developments in world culture—particularly at the beginning of the twentieth century, with the flowering of fauvism, cubism, dadaism, and surrealism. In Bohemian Paris, Dan Franck leads us on a vivid and magical tour of the Paris of 1900–1930, a hotbed of artistic creation where we encounter Apollinaire, Modigliani, Cocteau, Matisse, Picasso, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald, working, loving, and struggling to stay afloat. Sixteen pages of black-and-white illustrations are featured. “Franck spins lavish historical, biographical, artistic, and even scandalous details into a narrative that will captivate both serious and casual readers . . . Marvelous and informative.” —Carol J. Binkowski, Library Journal
