Book Synopsis Dan Colen: Sweet Liberty by : Dan Colen
Download or read book Dan Colen: Sweet Liberty written by Dan Colen and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet Liberty brings together 15 years of work by painter Dan Colen (born 1979), one of the "bad boys" of the New York art world who emerged onto the scene in the early 2000s alongside artists like Dash Snow and Ryan McGinley. Witty, shocking, poignant and nihilistic, Colen's art presents a portrait of contemporary America and investigates the acts of producing and looking at art. Alongside significant early works such as "Me, Jesus and the Children" (2001-03), this publication features paintings from Colen's long-running Gum and Trash series, as well as four installations in which Colen appropriates imagery from the mass media and American subcultures. This volume marks, in Colen's own words, "the first time I've been able to present the full range of my work and the wide-ranging ideas, crafts, materials, technologies and processes that I engage with."
Download or read book The 2030 Spike written by Colin Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clock is relentlessly ticking! Our world teeters on a knife-edge between a peaceful and prosperous future for all, and a dark winter of death and destruction that threatens to smother the light of civilization. Within 30 years, in the 2030 decade, six powerful 'drivers' will converge with unprecedented force in a statistical spike that could tear humanity apart and plunge the world into a new Dark Age. Depleted fuel supplies, massive population growth, poverty, global climate change, famine, growing water shortages and international lawlessness are on a crash course with potentially catastrophic consequences. In the face of both doomsaying and denial over the state of our world, Colin Mason cuts through the rhetoric and reams of conflicting data to muster the evidence to illustrate a broad picture of the world as it is, and our possible futures. Ultimately his message is clear; we must act decisively, collectively and immediately to alter the trajectory of humanity away from catastrophe. Offering over 100 priorities for immediate action, The 2030 Spike serves as a guidebook for humanity through the treacherous minefields and wastelands ahead to a bright, peaceful and prosperous future in which all humans have the opportunity to thrive and build a better civilization. This book is powerful and essential reading for all people concerned with the future of humanity and planet earth.
Book Synopsis Ryan McGinley by : Nora Burnett Abrams
Download or read book Ryan McGinley written by Nora Burnett Abrams and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine Ryan McGinley’s early photographs and Polaroids—raw, visceral portraits of his coterie of friends and artists in downtown New York City. Published to accompany an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Ryan McGinley: The Kids Were Alright focuses on the photographer’s early work from 1998 to 2003, the year of his solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. These early photographs and Polaroids—many of which have never been exhibited or published— document his friends and collaborators in downtown New York City. In the process, McGinley created a powerful portrait of his generation and their often debauched lifestyle: gritty, daring, and focused on moments of both pleasure and tedium. McGinley’s singular ability to capture the mood and emotional depth of a moment is evident even from the earliest years of his career. Curator Nora Burnett Abrams offers the most comprehensive consideration to date of this important work in her essay, and other contributions— including an interview with McGinley and artist Dan Colen and several short reminiscences from many of his subjects and social circle at the time— will provide context and commentary on the more than 100 works in the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With nods to artistic influences ranging from Andy Warhol to Jackson Pollock and Sigmar Polke, Walker?s work interrogates the ways a single image can migrate into a number of cultural contexts. Throughout his career, Walker has explored the manipulation and repurposing of images in order to destabilize issues of identity, race, class, sexuality, and politics. Often using such technologies as 3-D modeling software and laser-cutting, the artist works in a variety of media, including photography, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. In an era of digital reproduction, Walker?s work draws attention to popular culture?s perpetual consumption and reuse of images. 00Exhibition: Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, United States (16.09. - 31.12.2016).
Book Synopsis Sensemaking by : Christian Madsbjerg
Download or read book Sensemaking written by Christian Madsbjerg and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his work at some of the world's largest companies, including Ford, Adidas, and Chanel, Christian Madsbjerg's Sensemaking is a provocative stand against the tyranny of big data and scientism, and an urgent, overdue defense of human intelligence. Humans have become subservient to algorithms. Every day brings a new Moneyball fix--a math whiz who will crack open an industry with clean fact-based analysis rather than human intuition and experience. As a result, we have stopped thinking. Machines do it for us. Christian Madsbjerg argues that our fixation with data often masks stunning deficiencies, and the risks for humankind are enormous. Blind devotion to number crunching imperils our businesses, our educations, our governments, and our life savings. Too many companies have lost touch with the humanity of their customers, while marginalizing workers with liberal arts-based skills. Contrary to popular thinking, Madsbjerg shows how many of today's biggest success stories stem not from "quant" thinking but from deep, nuanced engagement with culture, language, and history. He calls his method sensemaking. In this landmark book, Madsbjerg lays out five principles for how business leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals can use it to solve their thorniest problems. He profiles companies using sensemaking to connect with new customers, and takes readers inside the work process of sensemaking "connoisseurs" like investor George Soros, architect Bjarke Ingels, and others. Both practical and philosophical, Sensemaking is a powerful rejoinder to corporate groupthink and an indispensable resource for leaders and innovators who want to stand out from the pack.

Download or read book Fractured Figure written by Urs Fischer and published by Deitch Projects. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet d'Amazon.com (Vol. 1): "A culture's body image, as refracted through its art, will usually provide a more telling account of its preoccupations than the most explicit political art; it seems that cultural symptoms leak more readily into depictions of the body than into more overt statements. This is especially true in periods of heightened alienation, when the solitary figure gains poignancy, but bodies register their eras in many ways: the signifiers of opulence, imperialism, fashion, social decay, sexual convention and anxiety can all be readily inscribed onto the human form in art--and indeed, always have been. Fractured Figure projects our millennial moment as one of fragile bodies pitched against a restless, dysphasic backdrop, in which terrorism and global warming impinge as daily realities. It draws on the world-renowned contemporary collection of Dakis Joannou, who, in collaboration with Jeffrey Deitch, has previously organized shows such as Artificial Nature and Post Human, in which similar concerns have arisen. Here, in works by Chris Ofili, David Altmejd, Richard Prince, Urs Fischer, Pawel Althamer, Ashley Bickerton, Barnaby Furnas and others, the figure is shown as un-idealized and compellingly mortal--situated in a realm that we will immediately recognize as our own."
Book Synopsis Urs Fischer Sculptures 2013-2018 by : Urs Fischer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 100 works and documentation of forty exhibitions and installations both public and private, New York-based artist Urs Fischer (born 1973) presents six years of work in this substantial volume. Arranged chronologically, this book allows the reader to follow Fischer's developments in form and his frequent adventure into whimsy. The artist's instinct for design is evident not only in his individual works but also in his clarity of vision for a space, beautifully illustrated in this volume. Sculpture inherently has physical presence and Fischer utilizes this to manipulate the viewer's perception of reality. Encountering the immense and the minuscule, the ever-changing and the static, a viewer must reconcile with his or her own presence in time. With this volume, the reader is invited to experience significant ephemeral, collaborative and interactive works in context in over 400 pages plus gatefold inserts.
Download or read book Robert Ryman written by Robert Ryman and published by Peter Blum Editions. This book was released on 2004 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works in this exhibition catalogue record the time when Robert Ryman, then in his early twenties, was formulating his disciplined approach to painting. On off-white and translucent materials including wallpaper, a circular coffee filter, newsprint and mylar, Ryman drew, tooled, brushed and pressed his marks using a flat table to support the work. His decision to use the square as a consistent format for non-narrative work was set, and while he sporadically used color in these earliest works, he subsequently chose white almost exclusively in the process of eliminating all that was superfluous to a painting.
