Book excerpt: The NASA Technical Reports Servcr (NTRS) houses half a million publications that are a valuable means of information to researchers, teachers, students, and the general public. These documents are all aerospace related with much scientific and technical information created or funded by NASA. Some types of documents include conference papers, research reports, meeting papers, journal articles and more. This is one of those documents. This slide presentation reviews the damage tolerance for composite laminates. It includes information surrounding observations on impact testing, laminate damage threshold, and fatigue.

Book excerpt: This final report contains the results of an investigation on matrix-related damage mechanisms in notched composite laminates. The theoretical approach taken follows the principles of micromechanisms and the mechanics of brittle fracture at the descriptive level considered valid for the so-called ply-elasticity. Namely, the laminate is basically treated as a 3-dimensional elastic solid which is made of distinctly anisotropic layers. Brittle fracture can initiate and propagate within any layer having a weaker axis of material anisotropy, and within any one of the weaker layer interfaces due to the 3-dimensional interlaminar stresses. Owing to the particular microstructure of the laminate, growth of such sublaminate cracks constitutes a load- or time-dependent evolutionary process. A computer simulation methodology is developed to describe the modes and the extent of damage caused initially by the presence of the notch, and subsequently by the damages themselves. Experiment using a graphite-epoxy laminate is then conducted to validate the simulation results. Keywords: Graphite epoxy laminates, Notches, Holes, Stress concentration, Matrix cracks, Mixed modes, Crack growth, Finite element fracture mechanics.

To make effective use these materials, it is necessary to consider the ability of a laminate to resist damage, as well as material strength and stiffness. A possible means for improving damage tolerance is the use of non-traditional composite laminates, in which the longitudinal 0 plies are replaced with 5 or 10 plies. The main objectives of this collaborative Georgia Tech / Boeing research was the characterization of these non-traditional laminates, and the determination of appropriate lamina-level analytical techniques that are capable of predicting the changes caused by the use of slightly off-axis longitudinal plies. A quasi-isotropic [45/90/-45/theta/45/90/-45/-theta]s and hard [45/theta/-45/theta/90/45]s lay-up, where theta =0,5 or 10, were tested in open hole tension, filled hole tension, open hole compression, single shear bearing, and unnotched tension. These coupon level tests illustrated the effects of lay-up, notch constraint, and load type on traditional and non-traditional laminates. Die penetrant enhanced in-situ radiography was performed to determine the extent of damage suppression. The use of non-traditional laminates was found to reduce longitudinal ply cracking and delamination, with significant effect on the stress distribution around the notch. The use of non-traditional laminates also resulted in a 15%-20% improvement in bearing strength of the traditional laminates. Several predictive techniques were implemented to evaluate their ability to predict the effect of slight changes in ply orientations. A progressive damage model was written to compare Tsai-Wu, Hashin, and Maximum Stress unnotched strength criterion. Additionally, several semi-empirical failure theories for notched strength prediction were compared with linear and bi-linear cohesive zone models to determine applicability to non-traditional laminates.

Book excerpt: "The prediction of fatigue life and evaluation of onset and growth of matrix cracks and delamination for general composite laminates are studied analytically using theories of damage tolerance, residual modulus degradation and residual strength degradation. Damage onset including matrix cracks and edge delamination are predicted by using a total strain energy release rate criterion which accounts for interactive effects of matrix cracks and delamination. The analytical models for modulus degradation, matrix crack density and delamination size growth as function of fatigue stress and fatigue cycles are proposed. The proposed approach provides four choices for predicting tension-tension fatigue life and for assessing fail-safety for structures made of composite laminates. The direct relation of physical damage to fatigue life and analytical equations for calculating residual elastic moduli E[symbol] and G[symbol] in terms of fatigue load and fatigue cycles are proposed. The proposed approach enables prediction of fatigue behaviour of general laminates using experimental data of a basic lay-up such as unidirectional laminate. The finite element technique was utilized to model the fatigue failure process of notched laminates. A simple example of a laminate with a central hole under tension-tension fatigue loading was performed." --

Book excerpt: The use of composite material systems in structural design has yielded significant improvements in material efficiency by minimizing weight while meeting static and dynamic strength requirements. The complexity of composite materials, however, has presented a spectrum of additional design considerations in the areas of fabrication, strength tailoring, failure mechanisms, and damage tolerance. Laminated composites exhibit a variety of damage and failure modes which include matrix cracking, fiber breakage, delamination propagation, and instability. Of prime concern is the predication of residual strength in composite structures subjected to damage-causing impact threats in the intended service environment. The present effort aims to account for many of the salient damage mechanisms utilizing a numerical, finite element-based approach. Such an approach permits a broad range of failure modes to be accounted for while allowing the modeling of complex geometries, support conditions, and applied loading. This report details the theoretical and algorithmic basis of a developed computer program denoted RESTRAN (REsidual STRength ANalysis), incorporating both material and structural failure modes in the prediction of residual strength in composite structures containing internal damage.

Book excerpt: An investigation was carried out, under the auspices of GARTEUR, at four European aerospace research establishments as the first phase of a collaborative research programme on impact damage tolerance of composite materials. Laminates, from a common batch of material having a 0 90 -+ 45 0 s lay up, were impacted by dropweight and residual strengths were measured under fully reversed loading for specimens containing barely visible impact damage. The impact damage significantly reduced the static compressive strength but subsequent fatigue loading produced little further reduction in strength and the fatigue strength at 10 to the 6th power cycles was similar to that for non impacted specimens. All four establishments produced similar results and in Phase 2 they will study in more detail a wider range of materials and test parameters. Keywords: Carbon fibre, Composite material, Impact, Fatigue, Residual strength, Barely visible impact damage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite element modelling of composite materials and structures provides an introduction to a technique which is increasingly being used as an analytical tool for composite materials. The text is presented in four parts: Part one sets the scene and reviews the fundamentals of composite materials together with the basic nature of FRP and its constituents. Two-dimensional stress-strain is covered, as is laminated plated theory and its limitations. Part two reviews the basic principles of FE analysis, starting with underlying theoretical issues and going on to show how elements are derived, a model is generated and results are processed. Part three builds on the basics of FE analysis and considers the particular issues that arise in applying finite elements to composites, especially to the layered nature of the material. Part four deals with the application of FE to FRP composites, presenting analytical models alongside FE representations. Specific issues addressed include interlaminar stresses, fracture delamination, joints and fatigue. This book is invaluable for students of materials science and engineering, and for engineers and others wishing to expand their knowledge of structural analysis. Covers important work on finite element analysis of composite material performance Based on material developed for an MSc course at Imperial College, London, UK Covers particular problems such as holes, free edges with FE results compared with experimental data and classical analysis
