The analysis includes the effects of processing induced residual thermal stresses, matrix inelasticity, and interface cracking. Due to these complexities, the analysis is performed computationally using the finite element method. Matrix inelasticity is modelled with a rate dependent viscoplasticity model. Interface fracture is modelled by the use of a nonlinear interface constitutive model. The problem formulation is summarized, and results are given for a four-ply unidirectional SCS-6/[beta]21S titanium composite under high temperature isothermal mechanical fatigue. Results indicate rate dependent viscoplasticity can be a significant mechanism for dissipating the energy available for damage propagation, thus contributing to improved ductility of the composite. Results also indicate that the model may be useful for inclusion in life prediction methodologies for MMC's.

Book excerpt: The overall program consisted of two distinct phases with objectives: Phase I Objective: To characterize the evolution of isothermal fatigue damage using nondestructive evaluation techniques and correlate this information with residual strength of the composite. Phase II Objective: To characterize and compare the evolution of damage due to creep and TMF fatigue of metal matrix composites (SCS-6/TI-6A1-4V manufactured by Textron Specialty Materials) using nondestructive evaluation techniques and thereby derive an 'inefficiency factor' for damage accumulation under in-phase thermomechanical fatigue (IP-TMF). Phase I Results: The first phase of the program concluded that the usefulness of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation to assess fatigue damage in a 06 Sigma-1240/Ti-6242 composites has been demonstrated through correlation of immersion and in situ ultrasonic data with residual tensile strength. Immersion surface wave scanning proved to be one of the most promising methods for correlating fatigue damage with the residual tensile strength for the composite used in this study. This study demonstrated that in situ nondestructive ultrasonic longitudinal wave and acoustic emission techniques can monitor the onset and accumulation of damage produced by either sustained loading or in-phased thermomechanical fatigue loading in a titanium matrix composite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guides researchers and practitioners toward developing highly reliable ceramic-matrix composites The book systematically introduces the thermomechanical fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) and environmental barrier coatings, including cyclic loading/unloading tensile behavior, cyclic fatigue behavior, dwell-fatigue behavior, thermomechanical fatigue behavior, and interface degradation behavior. It discusses experimental verification of CMCs and explains how to determine the thermomechanical properties. It also presents damage evolution models, lifetime prediction methods, and interface degradation rules. Thermomechanical Fatigue of Ceramic-Matrix Composites offers chapters covering unidirectional ceramic-matrix composites and cross-ply and 2D woven ceramic-matrix composites. For cyclic fatigue behavior of CMCs, it looks at the effects of fiber volume fraction, fatigue peak stress, fatigue stress ratio, matrix crack spacing, matrix crack mode, and woven structure on fatigue damage evolution. Both the Dwell-fatigue damage evolution and lifetime predictions models are introduced in the next chapter. Experimental comparisons of the cross-ply SiC/MAS composite, 2D SiC/SiC composite, and 2D NextelTM 720/Alumina composite are also included. Remaining sections examine: thermomechanical fatigue hysteresis loops; in-phase thermomechanical fatigue damage; out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue; interface degradation models; and much more. -Offers unique content dedicated to thermomechanical fatigue behavior of ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) and environmental barrier coatings -Features comprehensive data tables and experimental verifications -Covers a highly application-oriented subject?CMCs are being increasingly utilized in jet engines, industrial turbines, and exhaust systems Thermomechanical Fatigue of Ceramic-Matrix Composites is an excellent book for developers and users of CMCs, as well as organizations involved in evaluation and characterization of CMCs. It will appeal to materials scientists, construction engineers, process engineers, and mechanical engineers.

Book excerpt: An investigation was undertaken to characterize the deformation response of unidirectional SCS-6/Ti 15-3 metal matrix composite (MMC) lamina subjected to in-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loading. Evaluations were done in an inert atmosphere to avoid oxidation effects. It was found that the dominant effect on deformation was due to strain ratchetting. Distributed fiber cracking was found to be the primary damage mode in in-phase TMF. The early part of strain ratchetting was identified to be due to the viscoplastic response of the composite as fewer fiber cracks were found to develop at this stage in the MMC specimens. Early fiber cracks were found to occur near molybdenum (Mo) ribbon sites. The fiber-cracking process was determined to be progressive in nature. On qualitative grounds, the concept of fiber ineffective length and the zone of stress intensification at the neighboring fiber at temperature, as in the case of in-phase TMF, was consistent with the observation of progressive fiber cracking in the MMCs.

Book excerpt: A mechanical test technique was developed to assist in quantifying the accumulation of damage in composite materials during thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) cycling. This was accomplished by incorporating definitive elastic mechanical property measurements into an ongoing load-controlled TMF test without disturbing the test specimen or significantly altering the test conditions. The technique allows two fundamental composite properties consisting of the isothermal elastic static moduli and the macroscopic coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to be measured and collected as functions of the TMF cycles. The specific implementation was incorporated into the commonly employed idealized in-phase and out-of-phase TMF cycles. However, the techniques discussed could be easily implemented into any form of load-controlled TMF mission cycle. By quantifying the degradations of these properties, tremendous insights are gained concerning the progression of macroscopic composite damage and often times the progression of damage within a given constituent. This information should also be useful for the characterization and essential for the verification of analytical damage modeling methodologies. Several examples utilizing this test technique are given for three different fiber lay-ups of titanium metal matrix composites. Castelli, Michael G. Book excerpt: Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are rapidly becoming strong candidates for high temperature and high stiffness structural applications such as the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF). This study systematically investigated the failure modes and associated damage in a cross-ply, (0/90)2s SCS6/Ti-15-3 metal matrix composite under in-phase and out-of-phase thermomechanic fatigue. Initiation and progression of fatigue damage were recorded and correlated to changes in Young's Modulus of the composite material. Experimental results show an internal stabilization of reaction zone size but degradation and separation from constituent materials under extended cyclic thermal loading. Critical to damage were transverse cracks initiating in the 90 degrees plies, growing and coalescing from fiber/matrix interfaces internal to the specimen, progressing outward through the 0 degree plies before failure. Maximum mechanical strain at failure was determined to be approximately 0.0075 mm/mm. A correlation was made relating maximum matrix stress to failure life, resulting in a fatigue threshold limit of 280 MPa. An attempt was made to correlate the degradation in Young's Modulus (Damage=1-E/Eo) with the applied life cycles from different TMF tests.

Book excerpt: This book presents the relationships between tensile damage and fracture, fatigue hysteresis loops, stress-rupture, fatigue life and fatigue limit stress, and stochastic loading stress. Ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) possess low material density (i.e., only 1/4 - 1/3 of high-temperature alloy) and high-temperature resistance, which can reduce cooling air and improve structure efficiency. Understanding the failure mechanisms and internal damage evolution represents an important step to ensure reliability and safety of CMCs. This book investigates damage and fracture of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) subjected to stochastic loading, including: (1) tensile damage and fracture of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic loading; (2) fatigue hysteresis loops of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic loading; (3) stress rupture of fiber-reinforced CMCs with stochastic loading at intermediate temperature; (4) fatigue life prediction of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic overloading stress at elevated temperature; and (5) fatigue limit stress prediction of fiber-reinforced CMCs with stochastic loading. This book helps the material scientists and engineering designers to understand and master the damage and fracture of ceramic-matrix composites under stochastic loading.
