Book Synopsis Milk Production, Processing and Marketing by : Khalid Javed
Download or read book Milk Production, Processing and Marketing written by Khalid Javed and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk is considered as a complete diet for an infant and contains essential nutrients for the development of young mammals. The substances in milk provide energy and antibodies that help protect against infection. Most farmers are paid for the quality and composition of their milk. Whole milk, once approved for use, is pumped into storage silos where it undergoes pasteurization, homogenization, separation, and further processing. Milk is a highly perishable commodity because it is an excellent medium for the growth of microorganisms - particularly bacterial pathogens - that can cause spoilage as well as diseases in consumers. Milk processing allows the preservation of milk for days, weeks, or months and helps to reduce food-borne illness.

Book excerpt: Dairy consumption in Asia has more than doubled over the last 25 years, and has led to more than 50% of the world’s total dairy imports now entering Asian markets. Consequently, Asian countries are seeking to improve their self-sufficiency in dairy produce by developing their local milk industries. Asian livestock importers are looking for increasing numbers of high grade dairy stock from established dairy industries in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, a major problem encountered throughout Asia has been the poor performance of these exotic high grade dairy heifers when exported from their country of origin to a new, more stressful environment. This has been due to a failure to prepare for their introduction. Exotic dairy cows, particularly those from farms with high levels of herd performance, have high management requirements. If subjected to local and traditional small holder dairy farm practices, they are unlikely to produce acceptable yields of milk or may not even get back into calf. Poor management practices can lead to low growth rates, delayed breeding, stock diseases and even deaths among imported stock both before and after first calving. Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics addresses the entire range of management practices found on tropical small holder dairy farms, highlighting those which are likely to adversely impact on heifer and cow performance, hence farm profitability. It is a companion volume to three other manuals written by John Moran: Rearing Young Stock on Tropical Dairy Farms in Asia, Tropical Dairy Farming and Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers.

Book excerpt: There is a white revolution taking place in Pakistan, led by the private sector. It is transforming the practices of the country's dairy farmers and tying them in to the increasing demand for milk of its growing middle class. For the most part, the government and its functionaries are absent from this structural transformation in the country's rural economy Such absence is a first in the country's modern history. Stretching back to the colonial era under the Raj in India, when the building of irrigation canals starting in the 19th century transformed the landscape and tied rural populations to global commodity markets, the government always had a robust presence in the operations and changes of the rural economy. This time around, it is large multinationals led by Nestle and large Pakistani industrial food giants led by Engro Foods that are taking the lead in reshaping the rural economy, this time in the dairy sector. To tie farmers to their supply chains, these and other companies guarantee that they will be the sole purchaser for the farmer's entire dairy production. They then work with farmers to change on-farm dairy management practices to ensure consistent yields and quality of milk production. For farmers, having a guaranteed buyer for their enhanced milk production gives them an incentive to make the production and practice changes that the companies demand of them. Also, shorter payment cycles in the form of weekly payments to farmers means that their cost recovery time is significantly improved from traditional agricultural production of crops and commodities that are largely restricted to the country's two planting cycles. This financial transformation of the rural economy with its greater infusion of cash to farmers is also changing their ability to afford greater schooling access for their children with a broadly expressed desire that their children will not follow them into dairy farming.
