And the difficulties General Havelock had to encounter were great; for the boats had to be collected, and boatmen to be procured. This class of men were shy of coming forward, in consequence of the complicity of some members of their craft in the treachery at Suttee Chowra Ghat. The little steamer, however, was of great service, and the crossing was effected in some four days, notwithstanding every obstacle. Colonel Fraser-Tytler was indefatigable. I remember seeing him, one evening, in a little native building by the river side, soaked and daubed in such a manner as rather to resemble a Nubian stoker in the Ked Sea than his own thoroughly military and distingud self. Of course the troops were moved gradually down towards the Ganges, from the north-western corner of the station, and were passed across the water in turn. It was before the Force had got fully across, I think, that one morning, when I had returned from riding, I found a middle-sized, strongly-built man, dressed in Khakee (ash-coloured) uniform and a helmet, who had come to look me up, and who asked if I was a civilian who had arrived with the Force. I replied that I was, and he then said: "I am Herbert Bruce, I hope we shall be friends, and work cordially together." He had rather a colourless face, light hair, and very pale blue eyes; but a determined mouth, and altogether an expression of much intelligence. I knew nothing about him, but he told me he belonged to the Bombay Army, and that he had come up to be with Neill, who was very anxious to establish a military police, which would not only act as ordinary city constables, but could be used, on an emergency, for any outpost...

His V.C. award was gazetted as follows: “Hugh Henry Gough, Lieutenant, 1st Bengal Light Cavalry. Lieutenant Gough, when in command of a party of Hodson’s Horse, near Mumbagh, on 12 November, 1857, particularly distinguished himself by his forward bearing in charging across a swamp and capturing two guns although defended by a vastly superior body of the enemy. On this occasion he had his horse wounded in two places and his turban cut through by sword cuts, while engaged in combat with three sepoys. Lieutenant Gough also particularly distinguished himself near Jallalabad, Lucknow, on 21 February 1858, by showing a brilliant example to his Regiment when ordered to charge the enemies guns, and by his gallant and forward conduct he enabled them to effect their object. On this occasion he engaged himself in a series of single combats, until at length he was disabled by a musket ball through the leg, while charging two sepoys with fixed bayonets. Lieutenant Gough on that day had two horses killed under him, a shot through his helmet and another through his scabbard, besides being severely wounded.”

After leaving Muttra I had no further direct concern with the mutinies. I will, however, briefly relate the leading events that accompanied their suppression. Early in the year Lucknow was relieved, and the Gwalior contingent dispersed. The lower part of the Doab being now cleared of the rebels, Lord Canning left Calcutta and assumed charge of the Upper Provinces. He fixed his residence at Allahabad, to which station he transferred the seat of government. In the course of the year Lucknow was captured and Eohilcund reoccupied. So far as these provinces were concerned the mutiny was ended. It was not, however, till the lapse of another year that order was restored in Central India and other places. In November 1858, a general amnesty was proclaimed, and the Queen assumed the sovereignty of India. Her doing so gave great satisfaction to the natives, but for a reason which the English public would not have imagined, and of which I do not believe it is even now aware. The natives were under the belief that the East India Company farmed the country from the English Crown. They supposed, consequently, that the abolition of the Company would be followed by a remission of revenue to the extent of the profits which the Company had been in the habit of receiving. They also imagined that the direct government by the Queen would be accompanied by the establishment of a court, and a display of that splendour so congenial to their tastes. Having escaped narrowly from his erstwhile soldiers he rallied to the main garrison in Meerut, the rebels fled toward Delhi. He joined in the expedition to re-capture Delhi and relates his recollections with great spirit, there was no rest for the gallant young lieutenant as he joined in the effort to relieve Lucknow. During the last of the fighting his commanding officer, Captain Sanford, was killed and MacKenzie relates his hero’s death with great empathy. After the mutiny MacKenzie achieved the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1878 and led his troops in the Second Afghan War, 1879-80. Promoted to full colonel four years later, he served as honorary ADC to Lansdowne, the Viceroy of India.
