Come ha potuto l'imperatore filosofo, l'autore di un "diario spirituale" per certi versi così affine al cristianesimo, rendersi responsabile di quelle stragi e di quel sangue? È un paradosso, un enigma. Questo libro cerca di spiegarlo, mettendo a confronto il "carnefice" e le vittime, Marco Aurelio e i suoi martiri. In una serie di medaglioni che attorniano un più dettagliato ritratto: in cerchio le morti eroiche dei caduti per la fede, al centro il percorso umano, filosofico e politico di Marco Aurelio. Per capire cosa è veramente successo, e perché. L’intento dell’autore è di sondare il "mistero" dell'imperatore filosofo, cioè capire come mai uno dei più alti spiriti del pensiero e della coscienza antichi (in certe pagine dei Pensieri decisamente vicino alla visione cristiana) abbia potuto perseguitare e reprimere i cristiani con intensità, continuità e talora efferatezza. Mario Spinelli è stato docente di lettere nei licei classici e di latino all’Istituto Patristico Augustinianum. Si interessa di cultura classica, patrologia e agiografia. Come giornalista pubblicista ha collaborato a varie testate quotidiane e periodiche, fra cui L’Osservatore Romano, Il Tempo, LibriPer, Città Nuova e altre. Ha pubblicato saggi e studi sui Padri e gli autori medievali, che ha tradotto in gran numero. È autore di diverse biografie, tradotte anche all’estero. Tra le più recenti: Il pagano di Dio. Giuliano l’Apostata. L’imperatore maledetto (Marcianum Press, 2016).
