Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1986, in his Originals series, Dag Erik Elgin has devoted himself as a re-creating painter to his own admittedly subjective, but not unusual, canon of modern painting. In the series he repeats the selected works, all of them Modernist or Classical Modernist, but without pursuing maximum authenticity in the copying manner of an art forger. The resulting canvases are at the boundary between complete appropriation and studying replica; in them, Elgin relives as a painter the processes whereby the actual originals arose, but at the same time uses them to generate an intellectual reflection on the sensitive topics of original and forgery. His Originals are aesthetically attractive, yet--as forgeries--they would not withstand a critical autopsy in the art market, for their materials and manner of production in no way disguise the fact that they have been created in the present. Yet it is the painting itself, the insistence on a personal product in oil on canvas, that makes the Original an original in an age of perfected digital opportunities for appropriation, which would outdo any artisanal transfer.

Download or read book State of the World 2010 written by Worldwatch Institute and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the environmental and social problems we face today are symptoms of a deeper systemic failing: a dominant cultural paradigm that encourages living in ways that are often directly counter to the realities of a finite planet. This paradigm, typically referred to as 'consumerism,' has already spread to cultures around the world and has led to consumption levels that are vastly unsustainable. If this pattern spreads further there will be little possibility of solving climate change or other environmental problems that are poised to dramatically disrupt human civilization. It will take a sustained, long-term effort to redirect the traditions, social movements and institutions that shape consumer cultures towards becoming cultures of sustainability. These institutions include schools, the media, businesses and governments. Bringing about a cultural shift that makes living sustainably as 'natural' as a consumer lifestyle is today will not only address urgent crises like climate change, it could also tackle other symptoms like extreme income inequity, obesity and social isolation that are not typically seen as environmental problems. State of the World 2010 paints a picture of what this sustainability culture could look like, and how we can - and already are - making the shift.

Book Synopsis Submerged Prehistory by : Jonathan Benjamin
Download or read book Submerged Prehistory written by Jonathan Benjamin and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major events of human prehistory such as the post-glacial recolonization of Northern Europe and the spread of agriculture through the Mediterranean took place on landscapes that are now, at least partially, underwater. Large parts of this submerged terrain are accessible to divers and can be investigated archaeologically. Prehistoric underwater research has emerged in recent decades as a distinct sub-discipline, developing approaches and methodologies that can be applied in coastal regions worldwide. As a result there is growing awareness of the potential for underwater archaeology to transform our ideas about the course of prehistory. This volume examines existing practice and new developments in the field of submerged prehistoric landscape research. The 25 peer-reviewed contributions from leading authors cover the results of recent research on three continents and the application of methodologies and techniques for site discovery, investigation and interpretation.
Book Synopsis Christian Platonism by : Alexander J. B. Hampton
Download or read book Christian Platonism written by Alexander J. B. Hampton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 875 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platonism has played a central role in Christianity and is essential to a deep understanding of the Christian theological tradition. At times, Platonism has constituted an essential philosophical and theological resource, furnishing Christianity with an intellectual framework that has played a key role in its early development, and in subsequent periods of renewal. Alternatively, it has been considered a compromising influence, conflicting with the faith's revelatory foundations and distorting its inherent message. In both cases the fundamental importance of Platonism, as a force which Christianity defined itself by and against, is clear. Written by an international team of scholars, this landmark volume examines the history of Christian Platonism from antiquity to the present day, covers key concepts, and engages issues such as the environment, natural science and materialism.

Book Synopsis How Big (Small?) are Fiscal Multipliers? by : Ethan Ilzetzki
Download or read book How Big (Small?) are Fiscal Multipliers? written by Ethan Ilzetzki and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We contribute to the intense debate on the real effects of fiscal stimuli by showing that the impact of government expenditure shocks depends crucially on key country characteristics, such as the level of development, exchange rate regime, openness to trade, and public indebtedness. Based on a novel quarterly dataset of government expenditure in 44 countries, we find that (i) the output effect of an increase in government consumption is larger in industrial than in developing countries, (ii) the fisscal multiplier is relatively large in economies operating under predetermined exchange rate but zero in economies operating under flexible exchange rates; (iii) fiscal multipliers in open economies are lower than in closed economies and (iv) fiscal multipliers in high-debt countries are also zero.

Book excerpt: Josef Albers: no tricks, no twinkling of the eyes presents a reading of Albers' practice through the lens of contemporary artists, writers and art historians, who negotiate the relevance of both his educational and artistic legacy today.Selections of Albers' own writing are dispersed throughout the book, offering a rich glance into his dedication to pedagogy and art, and the pioneering ideas that still resonate with contemporary art practitioners.Richly illustrated, the publication spans Albers' production over sixty years and highlight the dexterity of Albers' practice and not least his commitment to creating complex perceptual and spatial experiences through deceivingly simple compositions of colors and lines. The design of the book by Jeanne Betak has been conceived with great consideration to both the material and visual flow, following Albers' own love of materiality and typography.
Book Synopsis The Non-objective World by : Kazimir Malevich
Download or read book The Non-objective World written by Kazimir Malevich and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kasimir Malevich's treatise on Suprematism was included in the Bauhausbücher series in 1927, as was Piet Mondrian's reflections on Russian Constructivism in 1925 (New Design, Bauhausbücher 5). Like Mondrian, who was never an official member of the Bauhaus, Malevich nevertheless has a close connection to the ideas of the school in terms of content. This volume, the eleventh, remains the only book publication in Germany to be produced during the life of the Russian avant-garde artist, and it laid the foundation for his late work: to wrest the mask of life from the true face of art.
Book Synopsis How to Fight Inequality by : Ben Phillips
Download or read book How to Fight Inequality written by Ben Phillips and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality is the crisis of our time. The growing gap between a few at the top and the rest of society damages us all. No longer able to deny the crisis, every government in the world is now pledged to fix it – and yet it keeps on getting worse. In this book, international anti-inequality campaigner Ben Phillips shows why winning the debate is not enough: we have to win the fight. Drawing on his insider experience, and his personal exchanges with the real-life heroes of successful movements, he shows how the battle against inequality has been won before, and he shares a practical plan for defeating inequality again. He sets a route map for us to overcome deference, build our collective power, and create a new story. Most books on inequality are about what other people ought to do about it – this book is about why winning the fight needs you. Tired of feeling helpless in the face of spiralling inequality? Want to know what you can do about it? This is the book for you.
Book Synopsis Looters, Smugglers, and Collectors: Provenance Research and the Market by : Maria Bresciani

This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looters, Smugglers, and Collectors: Provenance Research and the Market departs from and extends beyond the restitution case of Henri Matisse's Blue Dress in a Yellow Armchair (1937) to the heirs of collector Paul Rosenberg in March 2014 after sixty years in Henie Onstad Kunstsenter's collection. The case was an impetus for a research project investigating the ownership history of artworks in the collection, and also for this publication which gathers seminal authors and artists who have developed the concept of provenance in different yet all extremely interesting perspectives. This book gives context to contributions by theorists and artists such as: Arjun Appadurai, Alexander Alberro, Wolfgang Ernst, Hans Haacke, Emmanuelle Polack, Uwe Fleckner, among others, as well as reprinting documentation material and artists contributions, some of it for the first time. The publication has obvious historical references to the looting and confiscation perpetrated by the Germans during World War II, but shows that similar acts are still occurring today as well, for example, the plundering and destruction of Palmyra in Syria.
