Book excerpt: Da Yan - Wild Goose Qigong The 2nd 64 movements From ancient times, Qigong was developed as a way of helping improve people's quality of life. It's an important component of the Chinese medical health systems. The art of Qigong consists primarily of meditation, relaxation, physical movement, mind-body integration and breathing exercises. When the mind and body come into a state of balance, stress is reduced and there is an increase in health and longevity. The 2nd 64 Da Yan Wild Goose Qigong movement set deals primarily with the 'pre-natal body' and refers to the energy we gather from the universe and from our ancestors before birth. Having dredged the channels in the 1st 64 movement set, the 2nd 64 movement set is designed to clear the channels to absorb fresh Qi, expel stale Qi and to restore organ balance. The twisting, stretching, bending and pressing movements produce stronger Qi fields and intensify the circulation through the energy channels. In the 2nd 64 movement set the goose is embarking on a great journey and flies out from this world to the edge of the Milky Way, to pick the herbs or gather the pre-natal Qi from the core of the universe. It then flies back to this world to share this healing energy with humanity Simon Blow is a 29th Generation of the Da Yan Wild Goose Qigong, an initiated student of the 28th lineage holder Grand Master Chen Chuan Gang, the eldest son of Grand Master Yang Mei Jung. He is a master teacher (Laoshi) and is the author of numerous books, DVDs and meditation CDs about the ancient Chinese healing arts. Simon has been initiated into Dragon Gate Daoism and given the name 'Xin Si' meaning 'Genuine Wisdom' and is also a Standing Council member of the World Academic Society of Medical Qigong, Beijing, China. 'This is the teaching textbook on Wild Goose Qigong in accordance with the original principles of the ancient masters, accurate instructions for all the movements, genuine meaning and interpretation of the understanding of all the key principles.' Grand Master Chen Chuan Gang 'Qigong makes me feel centered and balanced. I find I am calmer and more able to be the mindful person I wish to be.' Annie 'Qigong makes me feel calm, focused, happy and healthy. I have experienced improved health, both physically and mentally.' Jann

Book excerpt: Wild Goose (Dayan) Qigong is one of the premier healing systems in China, with its origins in the 4th century CE. It is one of the oldest documented systems, including both meditation and movement forms as well as healing and martial applications. Wild Goose is an Internal Art. This means that the energy generation methods used for healing, martial and even basic movement are radically different than what most people are used to in an "exercise" program. Internal energy supercharges the Wild Goose applications. This volume contains the principles that make the internal arts work. It provides everything from philosophy to the practice methods- guiding you step by step as you are introduced to the Wild Goose system. As a branch of Classical Chinese Medicine, qigong provides a practical method of relieving stress and balancing your body's energy systems to improve your health. If you are a "seeker", this art should resonate with you. (This volume supersedes the previous Wild Goose books by David Deich and Shane Lear)

Book excerpt: Throughout the years there have been several editions of Zhuang Zi's book with significant differences in certain parts of the text. Not every word in the book came from Zhuang Zi's pen. Contributions were made by his disciples and there have been many changes to the original text: errors in hand copying the text, in mistaking notations for text, and in outright forgery throughout centuries. Chen Guying's 1976 edition of the book, an eclectic study of all the editions that identifies probable forgeries, is used as the text reference in the present translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindfulness seems to be everywhere—but are we sure that's a good thing? Teachers Sallie Jiko Tisdale, Gil Fronsdal, Norman Fischer, and more explain how removing mindfulness from Buddhism may set a dangerous precedent. Mindfulness is in fashion. Oprah loves it, Google teaches it to employees—it has become widespread as a cure-all for stress, health problems and psychological difficulties, interpersonal trouble, and existential anxiety. However, when its proponents try to make it more accessible by severing it from its Buddhist roots, they run the risk of leeching mindfulness of its transformative power. Taught outside of its ethical and spiritual context it becomes a mere means to an end, rather than a way of life. Mindfulness is in danger of being co-opted into the spiritual equivalent of fast food: “McMindfulness.” Instead of being better people, we just become better employees, better consumers. The Zen teachers gathered here ask a bold question: Is universal mindfulness really a good thing? Ranging from thoughtful critiques to personal accounts of integrating mindfulness into daily life, each chapter offers insights to ground mindfulness in a deeper understanding of both where it comes from, and where it might be headed. With contributions from Marc Poirer, Robert Meikyo Rosenbaum, Barry Magid, Hozan Alan Senauke, Sallie Jiko Tisdale, Gil Fronsdal, Max Erdstein, Zoketsu Norman Fischer, Janet Jiryu Abels, Grace Schireson, Sojun Mel Weitsman, and Robert Sharf.

Book excerpt: This is a fresh take on one of the most popular Chinese Qigong routines-The Eight Pieces of Brocade. The Eight Pieces of Brocade or Ba Duan Jin in Chinese, has been popular for centuries. Its popularity spawning many variants, with typical explanations of the routine concentrating on its physical aspects. Those physical aspects are important, but they are only part of the story. The real message of the routine lies in its engagement of the body's bio-energy system. The body's bio-energy or qi and its cultivation via the acupuncture points and meridians are literally "where it's at" for internal qigong practitioners. The body's energetic transport system plays a vital role in all true Chinese internal arts, yet this topic is rarely addressed in contemporary literature. The hands and the body posture form specific energetic connections at important acupuncture points. Awareness of this single aspect can dramatically impact the results achieved by qigong practice. This text opens the door to a better understanding of the art of qigong. (Second Edition)
