Book excerpt: If you read other guides to bicycling Europe you'll find, between yawns, they are filled with very general practical information and describe routes in a long-winded narrative format, impractical for most cyclists. In addition, most focus on just one region or country. Written by Jerry Soverinsky, the owner of a Chicago-based tour company specializing in European destinations (www.cbttours.com) and former Second City comedy writer, this book differs from its predecessors by featuring (a.) detailed information for planning and riding 7- to 10-day tours in 10 countries, (b.) route descriptions in the form of precise, turn-by-turn "cue sheets" based on notable landmarks, and (c.) details for each tour, including historical overviews of regions, food and lodging accommodations to suit any budget, and up-to-date contact information. Whether you actually make it to Europe to ride or not, this highly-entertaining cycling book is well worth the read.

Book excerpt: This is the significantly updated Third Edition 2021, with over 60 new route maps making planning easier than ever, updated content, sights, and routes. Over 25 Interesting, Historic, and Cultural Rides. Cycling Along Europe's Rivers is a "How To" book on taking self-guided bike trips to Europe that are affordable and easy to organize. The book is based on the author's extensive experience, including over 25 years of annual cycle trips to Europe. Rhine River, Danube River, Elbe River, Loire River, Po River, Neckar River, Mosel River, Main River, and more. -How to plan and prepare. -How to get what you need to the start of a ride and home again --bikes, panniers, and you. -What to bring and what not -- how to keep your load small. -How to handle getting around and other logistics. -Bike, Lodging and Eating advice. -Safety, Security, and Communication advice. -Route recommendations and key features. In short, everything you need to know to have a first-class, comfortable, flexible, and interesting riding trip to Europe without spending a fortune or going with an organized package. We budget about $120 per day per person (less if sharing rooms) plus airfare for hotels, meals, and everything else for rides that are typically 8-14 days in length. Rivers make the perfect touring -- flat, easy to navigate, interesting towns, historical sites, and relatively short distances between stops and sites. These trips are for everyone -- from weekend warriors to casual riders, from the young to the old. I have undertaken these rides with riders in their 80s, and the last eight years with my son starting at age 8 on a tandem. Our routes guide riders through Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Italy, Switzerland, and, Slovakia, and utilize the detailed maps found in the terrific German Bikeline map guides. "Cycling Along Europe's Rivers" is a companion book to the European Bikeline Map Guides. It will tell you how and where to go, which Bikeline map guide to use for route details, and how to use these maps. That's all you need! Please Note: While the book does provide over 25 routes, suggested overnight stops, associated mileage, hotels and site, it does not provide turn-by-turn details, and detailed maps, because this is not necessary for these trips given GPS, generally well-marked trails, the very detailed Bikeline companion guides, and the rivers themselves providing the ultimate route guide! Cities and regions in Europe you can visit include, among many other: the Danube Gorge, Amsterdam, Leiden, the Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Arnhem, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz, Cochem, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel, the Rhine Falls, Lake Bodensee, Konstanz, Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, Vienna, Bratislava, Gyor, Tata, Budapest, Cesky Krumlov, Prague, Dresden, Meissen, Wittenberg, Potsdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Hameln, Hann. Munden, Orleans, Chambord, Blois, Amboise, Chenonceaux, Chinon, Saumur, Angers, St. Nazaire, Milan, Cremona, Parma, Mantua, Merano, Bolzano, Lake Garda, Verona, Padua, Chioggia, and Venice. Even a brief mention of the C&O Canal and Erie Canal rides as warm-ups. Cycling Along Europe's Rivers is practical and well-organized. We have loved these trips and think you will, too! The standard print version is in black and white, and on Kindle and print in full color. Please feel free to contact the author at: [email protected]. We appreciate all your kind reviews and feedback!" Note: The original book was published in 2012, and has been updated annually, updating routes and sites -- but this Third Edition represents a major update.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive guidebook to EuroVelo route 15 offers a detailed stage-by-stage description of the 1368km route along the Rhine, one of Europe's great rivers, passing through six countries on its way from Switzerland to the North Sea. The cycling is easy, downhill and along dedicated cycle lanes, the countries visited are very cycle-friendly and the waymarking is excellent. The whole trip can be completed in two weeks by a fit cyclist. The guide includes plenty of information to help you plan your trip, with advice on travel, accommodation and facilities. The full route is presented in 27 stages of 32-68km, with step-by-step route description, 1:100,000 mapping and notes on local points of interest. A facilities table, glossary and list of useful contacts can be found in the appendices. Starting in the Swiss Alps with high mountains, deep glacial valleys and gorges, the route soon reaches Europe's third largest lake, the Bodensee, and its greatest mainland waterfall. After Basel, the Rhine becomes a broad river, now the world's busiest river trading artery. The middle Rhine, between Bingen and Koblenz, forces its way through the narrow rocky Rhine gorge, lined by romantic castles perched above Germany's finest vineyards. Finally, the river passes through low-lying Holland, famed for its many flood dykes and windmills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic, once hard-to-find travelogue recalls one of the very first around-the-world bicycle treks. Filled with rarely matched feats of endurance and determination, Around the World on a Bicycle tells of a young cyclist’s ever-changing and maturing worldview as he ventures through forty countries on the eve of World War II. It is an exuberant, youthful account, harking back to a time when the exploits of Richard Byrd, Amelia Earhart, and other adventurers stirred the popular imagination. In 1935 Fred A. Birchmore left the small American town of Athens, Georgia, to continue his college studies in Europe. In his spare time, Birchmore toured the continent on a one-speed bike he called Bucephalus (after the name of Alexander the Great’s horse). A born wanderer, Birchmore broadened his travels to include the British Isles and even the Mediterranean. After a lengthy, unplanned detour in Egypt, Birchmore put his studies on hold, pointed Bucephalus eastward, and just kept going. From desert valleys to frozen peaks, from palace promenades to muddy jungle trails, Birchmore saw it all on his eighteen-month, twenty-five-thousand-mile odyssey. Some of the people he encountered had never seen a bike—or, for that matter, an Anglo-European. As a good travel experience should, Birchmore’s trip changed his outlook on strangers. Always daring, outgoing, and energetic, he now saw an innate goodness in people. In between bone-breaking spills, wild animal attacks, and privation of all kinds, Birchmore learned that he had little to fear from human encounters. That he traveled through a world on the brink of global war makes this lesson even more remarkable—and timeless.

Book excerpt: Bicycle Utopias investigates the future of urban mobilities and post-car societies, arguing that the bicycle can become the nexus around which most human movement will revolve. Drawing on literature on post-car futures (Urry 2007; Dennis and Urry 2009), transition theory (Geels et al. 2012) and utopian studies (Levitas 2010, 2013), this book imagines a slow bicycle system as a necessary means to achieving more sustainable mobility futures. The imagination of a slow bicycle system is done in three ways: Scenario building to anticipate how cycling mobilities will look in the year 2050. A critique of the system of automobility and of fast cycling futures. An investigation of the cycling senses and sociabilities to describe the type of societies that such a slow bicycle system will enable. Bicycle Utopias will appeal to students and scholars in fields such as sociology, mobilities studies, human geography and urban and transport studies. This work may also be of interest to advocates, activists and professionals in the domains of cycling and sustainable mobilities.

Book excerpt: The Wild Atlantic Way is a driving route along Ireland's Atlantic seaboard, covering over 2,350km of coastline and showcasing the region's breathtaking landscapes. This guide adapts the route for cyclists - and throws in a couple of other highlights (such as the Aran Islands and Killarney) for good measure. Since relatively few people are likely to have seven weeks to spare for a full Wild Atlantic Way tour, the book presents six self-contained cycle tours, each offering 7-10 days of riding. For the full Wild Atlantic Way experience, these distinct routes can be linked together into a 44-stage trip from Derry/Londonderry to Cork. Each route includes detailed advice on accommodation and facilities, plus optional detours and shortcuts and points of interest. The routes themselves are presented as 'route cards': ideal for use with a cycle computer, these pages provide 'at a glance' information for when you're on the road, covering navigation, facilities and local highlights. The guide covers all the practicalities - including transport, equipment and general tips on cycling in Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook provides 14 stages of route description to cycling along the Moselle river, a route that offers stunning scenery, plentiful accommodation and places to eat and drink, and straightforward cycling throughout. A well-waymarked, generally downhill 512km route, it is mostly off-road and on well-surfaced cycle tracks (mainly asphalt) with virtually no gradients, and the majority is along the riverbank or on canal towpaths. From its source in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France, the Moselle flows through the French region of Lorraine and crosses into Luxembourg then into the German Rheinland region before it reaches its confluence with the Rhine at the west German city of Koblenz. Suitable for both veteran long-distance cyclists and for newcomers to cycle touring who wish to start with an easy-to-follow journey, the route can be completed in a week by fit cyclists, cycling two stages per day. Two weeks allow for alternative stages and optional excursions through the Saar and Rhine gorges and to visit the Boucles de Moselle and the city of Luxembourg, and give enough time for sightseeing and a leisurely riding pace.
