Book excerpt: Finally . . . some respect! However, my name could’ve been a tad bit bigger on the cover. A “Queen” has the right to be choosy. Girlahhh . . . I’ve been gone for a minute and now I’m back to set it off! Unfortunately, though, not everyone was able to make it to the sequel for obvious reasons. But if you thought there was back biting, knife stabbing, low-down dirty drama up in Cut N’ Curl before, hunty, you ain’t ready for what’s about to go down! I would go ahead and spill you a little tea, but the way me and Rayven’s bank account is set up . . . well, you know the rest. Happy Reading. Smooches!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REBELSof IndependenceMr. Powell paints a stunningly vivid picture of racial and religious bigotry and prejudice... "Slavery's Baggage"... which has been handed down from generation to generation of white and black southern children by their families, preachers, teachers, and friends since that first shipload of human cargo arrived on American soil in 1619. Then, using his father's life and the friendship of two young boys -- one black, the other white -- as a backdrop, he tells a simple story about typical Mississippians . . .devoutly religious, hard working, mostly country people, of "good moral fibre"... and how they are throwing off that yoke. He acknowledges some progress in human relations in the last century, but says those "roots of prejudice" are still being passed along by everyday moms and dads -- the very "backbone" of our Country -- to sons and daughters throughout America. Considering our history of racial and religious biases, he asks... "Where will we be in 2035?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Biology is the systematic study of the interactions between the components of a biological system and studies how these interactions give rise to the function and behavior of the living system. Through this, a life process is to be understood as a whole system rather than the collection of the parts considered separately. Systems Biology is therefore more than just an emerging field: it represents a new way of thinking about biology with a dramatic impact on the way that research is performed. The logical approach provides an intuitive method to provide explanations based on an expressive relational language. This book covers various aspects of logical modeling of biological systems, bringing together 10 recent logic-based approaches to Systems Biology by leading scientists. The chapters cover the biological fields of gene regulatory networks, signaling networks, metabolic pathways, molecular interaction and network dynamics, and show logical methods for these domains based on propositional and first-order logic, logic programming, answer set programming, temporal logic, Boolean networks, Petri nets, process hitting, and abductive and inductive logic programming. It provides an excellent guide for all scientists, biologists, bioinformaticians, and engineers, who are interested in logic-based modeling of biological systems, and the authors hope that new scientists will be encouraged to join this exciting scientific endeavor.

Book excerpt: Krete walked through the gates of Deerfield Correctional Facility a free man, after spending four years in prison equipped with a master plan. Within six months of his release he was gainfully employed and financially stable. He poured concrete by day and chased his passion for music at night with the goal of owning his own entertainment company. Unfortunately, for Krete bad habits die slowly—especially if the price was right. Greed gives way to reason without regards to the impact it would have on the lives of the people in his tightknit circle. Amidst the growing chaos, Krete finds himself blessed and cursed by the love of two women, which could later prove dangerous for all involved. Many lies were told in an effort to balance the demands of multiple relationships as both worlds begin to collide. They both played pivotal roles in his life—one has his heart and the other one has his back. In addition, an unexpected windfall opens up a drug pipeline stretching from Georgia to VA, which attracts deadly consequences and the life he once envisioned evolves into a dream deferred.

Book excerpt: Multiprocessor Execution of Logic Programs addresses the problem of efficient implementation of logic programming languages, specifically Prolog, on multiprocessor architectures. The approaches and implementations developed attempt to take full advantage of sequential implementation technology developed for Prolog (such as the WAM) while exploiting all forms of control parallelism present in logic programs, namely, or-parallelism, independent and-parallelism and dependent and-parallelism. Coverage includes a thorough survey of parallel implementation techniques and parallel systems developed for Prolog. Multiprocessor Execution of Logic Programs is recommended for people implementing parallel logic programming systems, parallel symbolic systems, parallel AI systems, and parallel theorem proving systems. It will also be useful to people who wish to learn about the implementation of parallel logic programming systems.

Book excerpt: Born in September 1942, Joseph A. Stokes began writing short stories after he retired. There was one story (Henyas’ Tree) that mostly developed on its own. It is a story about the interactions between various aggressive, strong willed characters. The author developed an interest in human interaction while attending school. It affected the remainder of his course selections and later gave direction to a career. In 1970 he was working at a large plant. Within his first months of work, he jumped at the chance to join the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Committee. His duties involved visits to local minority organizations and meeting with employees of all ages, races, etc., on matters that might affect their work performance. The author worked 28 years as a problem-solving counselor, investigator, specialist and unit manager. It helped him understand people and the directions a person might take under stress. A strong-willed, multi-raced woman was born into a life she would not accept; a world of servitude that demanded she be dutiful to others. At an early age she was separated from her family and, therefore, was required to grow up quickly. This was done with the assistance of a surrogate mother, Haddie. It was Haddie that gave her the confidence and courage to adjust to and accept her lot in life. She was able to allow herself to commit to her affections and a life with a man who was well outside of her social status.

Book excerpt: Bawdy and sometimes horrifying, hilarious on the way to being tragic, Raymond Andrews's Muskhogean County novels tell of black life in the Deep South from the end of the First World War to the beginning of the 1960s, from the days of mules and white men with bullwhips to the moment when the pendulum began to swing. This story tells of a venture between John Morgan Jr., the dissolute heir to Appalachee's leading white family, and Baby Sweet Jackson, owner of the once-vibrant Red's Cafe in Dark Town. On Independence Day, 1966, the partners open Muskhogean County's first bordello, with two dark-skinned black women, Lana Lips and Fig, ready for the expected white clientele. Then a mysterious woman, announcing herself as the 'third whore,' arrives--and proclaims that her body will be 'for colored only.'
