Book excerpt: * More than 60 case studies of sensational curved buildings from around the world* Includes a short historical overview and the most recent design and technical developmentsIn Curved: Bending Architecture, the author seeks out the most sensational contemporary buildings from around the world that incorporate wave-like, rounded forms into their design. Curved forms in architecture are found throughout history (like the Colosseum in Rome) but today's constructions explore the curve to its utmost fluid and freeform potential. From Zaha Hadid to Bosjes Chapel and from Brussels to China, this is a selection of amazing buildings by world class architects who think outside the box and have redefined the built world around us.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Curved Composites by : S.D. Akbarov
Download or read book Mechanics of Curved Composites written by S.D. Akbarov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the frrst to focus on mechanical aspects of fibrous and layered composite material with curved structure. By mechanical aspects we mean statics, vibration, stability loss, elastic and fracture problems. By curved structures we mean that the reinforcing layers or fibres are not straight: they have some initial curvature, bending or distortion. This curvature may occur as a result of design, or as a consequence of some technological process. During the last two decades, we and our students have investigated problems relating to curved composites intensively. These investigations have allowed us to study stresses and strains in regions of a composite which are small compared to the curvature wavelength. These new, accurate, techniques were developed in the framework of continuum theories for piecewise homogeneous bodies. We use the exact equations of elasticity or viscoelasticity for anisotropic bodies, and consider linear and non-linear problems in the framework of this continuum theory as well as in the framework of the piecewise homogeneous model. For the latter the method of solution of related problems is proposed. We have focussed our attention on self-balanced stresses which arise from the curvature, but have provided sufficient information for the study of other effects. We assume that the reader is familiar with the theory of elasticity for anisotropic bodies, with partial differential equations and integral transformations, and also with the Finite Element Method.

Book Synopsis Geometry of Nonpositively Curved Manifolds by : Patrick Eberlein
Download or read book Geometry of Nonpositively Curved Manifolds written by Patrick Eberlein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from the foundations, the author presents an almost entirely self-contained treatment of differentiable spaces of nonpositive curvature, focusing on the symmetric spaces in which every geodesic lies in a flat Euclidean space of dimension at least two. The book builds to a discussion of the Mostow Rigidity Theorem and its generalizations, and concludes by exploring the relationship in nonpositively curved spaces between geometric and algebraic properties of the fundamental group. This introduction to the geometry of symmetric spaces of non-compact type will serve as an excellent guide for graduate students new to the material, and will also be a useful reference text for mathematicians already familiar with the subject.
Book Synopsis Quantum Fields in Curved Space by : N. D. Birrell
Download or read book Quantum Fields in Curved Space written by N. D. Birrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-02-23 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of the subject of gravitational effects in quantum field theory. Although the treatment is general, special emphasis is given to the Hawking black hole evaporation effect, and to particle creation processes in the early universe. The last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth in this subject. This is the first attempt to collect and unify the vast literature that has contributed to this development. All the major technical results are presented, and the theory is developed carefully from first principles. Here is everything that students or researchers will need to embark upon calculations involving quantum effects of gravity at the so-called one-loop approximation level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades readers and critics have acclaimed Yves Bonnefoy as France's greatest living poet. His most recent book of verse, The Curved Planks, crowns an oeuvre that has won him the highest international honors. More than any other single work, this sequence embodies the astonishing variety of Bonnefoy's art. A rich fabric of themes, styles, and genres, it balances aesthetic complexity with heartfelt directness. This bilingual edition of The Curved Planks sets the French texts alongside English versions by the noted translator Hoyt Rogers, who has collaborated closely with Bonnefoy in crafting poems that re-create the freshness and vision of the originals. This volume also includes a preface by the renowned poet and critic Richard Howard and essays by the translator that situate The Curved Planks in the author's body of work. All assist in introducing the English-language reader to Bonnefoy's profound poetic gift.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime by : Stephen A. Fulling
Download or read book Aspects of Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime written by Stephen A. Fulling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-08-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of quantum fields on curved spacetimes has attracted great attention since the discovery, by Stephen Hawking, of black-hole evaporation. It remains an important subject for the understanding of such contemporary topics as inflationary cosmology, quantum gravity and superstring theory. This book provides, for mathematicians, an introduction to this field of physics in a language and from a viewpoint which such a reader should find congenial. Physicists should also gain from reading this book a sound grasp of various aspects of the theory, some of which have not been particularly emphasised in the existing review literature. The topics covered include normal-mode expansions for a general elliptic operator, Fock space, the Casimir effect, the 'Klein' paradox, particle definition and particle creation in expanding universes, asymptotic expansion of Green's functions and heat kernels, and renormalisation of the stress tensor. The style is pedagogic rather than formal; some knowledge of general relativity and differential geometry is assumed, but the author does supply background material on functional analysis and quantum field theory as required. The book arose from a course taught to graduate students and could be used for self-study or for advanced courses in relativity and quantum field theory.
