Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been marked from birth to be one of a handful of beings whose life exemplifies the struggle between good and evil, Curtis the Lion takes the reader on a mystical journey through God's World. Relying on his ability and willingness to hear the Voices of Wisdom, he turns away from his family (Luke 14: 26, 27), to await the teaching of the Angels and the meaning of the Voices. Reminiscent of the Book of Isaiah, the world turns to war; all that was alive and hopeful dissolves into desolation and dust, and the Forces of Evil attempt to reel Curtis into their cause. Painfully tempted by their offers of eternal power, not just over this world, but over the universe, he struggles to maintain his allegiance to the Lord, finally choosing Wisdom and Peace. Born in Brooklyn in 1946, raised in the most classic of New York Jewish families, Ronnie Friedman-Barone was Bat Mitzvah, by choice, at fourteen. Soon after college, on LSD, she lost her belief in God, leaving her without joy or hope. In time, she felt herself being pulled towards a new spirituality, until she could no longer deny she was encountering Christ. Turning her back on this belief, primarily because of the chasm it would create between her and her family, she finally experienced a Mystical Grace to which she could not say no. In the early nineties, she became a Field Experience Supervisor at Harvard Divinity School and, in 1997, received, from the Divinity School, a three year fellowship in Urban Ministry. After traveling much of the world, she now lives in San Diego, California with her husband, Joe, and son, Dmitry. Misael Barron began drawing while still in elementary school. His first attempts were what he calls, "rudimentary," his art "maturing as a result of practice and careful analysis." Though he considers himself more adept with pencils, he has a devotion and respect for those, both ancient and contemporary, who have worked with fountain pens. Curtis gave him a small chance to be part of that tradition, but laments that business demands the illustrator to work quickly, while art demands patience. Misael is now 18 years old and lives in Escondido, California.

Book excerpt: Sexism in Narnia? Or Screwtape? Or amongst the Inklings? Many critics have labelled C.S. Lewis a sexist, even a misogynist. Did the life and writing of the hugely popular author and professor betray attitudes that today are unacceptable, even deplorable? The younger Lewis was criticized for a mysterious living arrangement with a woman, but his later marriage to an American poet, Joy Davidman, became a celebrated love story. As a writer he, along with J.R.R. Tolkien, formed a legendary literary group, the Inklings - but without women. In this collection of short essays, opinion pieces, and interviews, academics and writers come together to investigate these accusations. They include Alister McGrath, Randy Alcorn, Monika Hilder, Don W. King, Kathy Keller, Colin Duriez, Crystal Hurd, Jeanette Sears, David C. Downing, Malcolm Guite, and Holly Ordway. The resulting work, Women and C.S. Lewis, provides broad and satisfying answers.

Book excerpt: The lives of two women—the sole survivor of an airplane crash and the troubled park ranger leading the rescue mission—collide in this "gripping," (Vogue) "heart-pounding," (NPR) and "highly original" (LA Times) novel of tough-minded resilience. Longlisted for the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize A New York Times New and Noteworthy Book An O, The Oprah Magazine Best Book of January The sole survivor of a plane crash, seventy-two-year-old Cloris Waldrip is lost and alone in the unforgiving wilderness of Montana's rugged Bitterroot Range, exposed to the elements with no tools beyond her wits and ingenuity. Intertwined with her story is Debra Lewis, a park ranger struggling with addiction and a recent divorce who is galvanized by her new mission to find and rescue Cloris. As Cloris wanders mountain forests and valleys, subsisting on whatever she can scavenge, her hold on life ever more precarious, Ranger Lewis and her motley group of oddball rescuers follow the trail of clues she's left behind. Days stretch into weeks, and hope begins to fade. But with nearly everyone else giving up, Ranger Lewis stays true until the end. Dramatic and morally complex, Kingdomtide is a story of the decency and surprising resilience of ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances. In powerful, exquisite prose, debut novelist Rye Curtis delivers an inspiring account of two unforgettable characters whose heroism reminds us that survival is only the beginning.

Book excerpt: During his lifetime, Spencer Tracy was known as Hollywood's 'actor's actor'. Critics wrote that what Olivier was to theatre, Tracy was to film. Over his career he was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won two. But there has been no substantial, intimate biography of the man, until now. From his earliest days in stock theatre, Tracy was a publicist's trial, guarding his private life fiercely. Most of the people associated closely with him shunned the limelight - notably his wife, his children and the great actress Katharine Hepburn, with whom he had an affair that lasted over 26 years. Although his screen roles often depicted a happy, twinkling Irishman, Tracy struggled with alchoholism to the end, a fact which the studios managed to keep out of the papers. With the help of Tracy's daughter, Susie, and access to previously unseen papers, James Curtis has now produced the definitive biography of a tortured, complex and immensely talented man.The book contains 124 integrated photos, many published for the first time.
