Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-two principles of middle grade education are addressed in this report, which is intended for those who have the authority to give meaning and substance to the reform of middle grade education in California's public schools. Each principle is developed through a discussion that concludes with specific recommendations that have implications for legislative initiatives, educational policies, administrative guidelines, and professional practices. Part One, "Curriculum and Instruction: Achieving Academic Excellence," provides recommendations in the areas of core curriculum, knowledge, thinking and communication, character development, learning to learn, and instructional practice. Part Two, entitled "Student Potential: Realizing the 'Highest and Best' Intellectual, Social, Emotional, and Physical Development," covers academic counseling, equal access, student diversity and underrepresented minorities, at-risk students, and physical and emotional development. Part Three, "Organization and Structure: Creating New Learning Environments," addresses school culture, extracurricular and intramural activities, student accountability, transition, structure, scheduling, and assessment. Part Four, "Teaching and Administration: Preparing for Exemplary Performance," focuses on professional preparation and staff development. Part Five, entitled "Leadership and Partnership: Defining the Catalysts for Middle Grade Educational Reform," focuses on sharing accountability for educational reform among parents, communities, and school boards, and concludes with a proposal for a partnership to create 100 state-of-the-art middle schools. Appended are (1) an outline of middle-grade student characteristics; (2) a tabular "accountability matrix" for the recommendations as a whole; and (3) a selected bibliography of books and articles on middle grade education. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical context of African Americans' educational experiences, and it provides information that helps to assess the dominant discourse on education, which emphasises White middle-class cultural values and standardisation of students' outcomes. Curriculum violence is defined as the deliberate manipulation of academic programming in a manner that ignores or compromises the intellectual and psychological well being of learners. Related to this are the issues of assessment and the current focus on high-stakes standardised testing in schools, where most teachers are forced to teach for the test.

Book excerpt: This document is a revision of the California History-Social Science Curriculum first published in 1988. The framework represents an effort to strengthen education in the history-social science curriculum while building on the best practices contained in the previous document. The book addresses the goals of knowledge and cultural understanding through historical literacy, ethical literacy, cultural literacy, geographic literacy, economic literacy, and sociopolitical literacy. Goals of democratic understanding and civic values include: national identity; constitutional heritage; and civic values, rights, and responsibilities. Goals of skills attainment and social participation encompass participation skills, critical thinking skills, and basic study skills. Course descriptions for both U.S. history and world history courses are listed, along with the scopes and sequences for grades K-12. Seven appendices update the chronology in U.S. and world history to current times, address the importance and use of primary sources, suggest some local options for distributions of the units and topics in world history that support both coverage and selected in-depth studies, provide insights into career options that are possible in history and the social sciences, and present an essay for teacher background and student study that emphasizes the importance of citizen participation in a democratic society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the major findings of a study of 26 California high schools. The study, Paths through High School, was conducted to describe the characteristics of high school curricula in California, how they are determined and how they differ for various groups of students. Chapter 1 describes the state, district, and school levels of curricular policy and decision making in California's educational system. This chapter also describes the decisions that are made at each level and compares statewide characteristics of the schools with those of the schools in the study. In chapter 2, the major state-level policies of graduation and proficiency requirements are addressed. These have clear effects on particular cohorts of students, but do not standardize programs of study. Students therefore can pursue very different paths through high school, as demonstrated by the courses of study of three students in one of the studied schools. The academic, nonacademic, and elective course requirements of the schools studied are compared. Chapter 3 describes each schools' curricular structure whereby students are placed in various instructional cohorts. Each cohort receives a different curriculum, determined by the department-level tracking system. Sample curricular maps from the schools are analyzed. Chapter 4 outlines the processes used to place and monitor students. In chapter 5, the effects of the policies and practices found are compared in terms of the academic programs available to cohorts of students. The data collection plan for the study and sample student academic programs are provided in the appendices. (JD)

Book excerpt: This framework emphasizes health literacy for students, i.e., development of the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed for healthy living. The framework defines four unifying ideas of health literacy that serve as central themes for all content areas and grade levels: (1) acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health; (2) respect for and promotion of the health of others; (3) an understanding of the process of growth and development; (4) informed use of health-related information, products, and services; and (5) promotion of health education supported by a comprehensive school health system and sustained by the collaborative efforts of school, family, and community. Seven chapters are organized as follows: (1) "The Vision: Health Literacy, Healthy Schools, Healthy People"; (2) Developing Health Literacy in the Classroom and in the School"; (3) "Health Education"; (4) "Beyond Health Education"; (5) "Assessment of Health Literacy"; (6) "Criteria for Evaluating Instructional Resources"; and (7) "Integration with Other Disciplines." Selected Education Code sections, a paper titled "Integrated Services Center Links School, Family and Community" (Andrea Zetlin and Robert Bilovsky), Project Teach recommendations on preservice teacher training in health education, and a list of publications available from the California Department of Education are appended.
