Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to examine music therapy (MT) as it is currently used in the treatment of individuals who are coping with pain. A 36-question survey, offering both multiple choice and short answer questions, was offered to professional music therapists (MT-BC) with clinical experience living and working within the United States (U.S.). Potential survey participants were identified through their membership with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). A total of 246 music therapists participated in this survey. The majority of respondents (36%) reported utilizing a combination of methods from a variety of MT theoretical perspectives. Fifty-eight percent of respondents indicated that they use music in sessions for the purpose of pain management at least "sometimes," and 93% perceive that the client-therapist relationship, otherwise referred to as the therapeutic relationship, is an extremely important factor in whether MT treatment will be successful in pain management. Ninety-four percent of all respondents admit to collaborating with at least one other type of helping professional, and 91% of respondents believe that interdisciplinary teamwork is very important when working with clients and pain management. Results of this survey indicate that Board-Certified Music Therapists in the U.S. are conducting therapeutic sessions utilizing various MT techniques for pain management, and believe in the necessity of an optimal client-therapist relationship. Implications of the results for clinical practice and future direction of music therapy research are discussed."--Page 7.

There are various factors that constitute suffering to cancer patients. Apart from physical pain, cancer patients usually experience emotional crisis and spiritual struggles (Magill, 2008). Music therapy is believed to be one of the most effective treatments for cancer patients. It provides a holistic care to patients with cancer. It will not only manage the physical sensation, but also address the psychological, social and spiritual parts of the patients (Magill, 2009). Although current studies have suggested the benefits of using music therapy in reducing pain for cancer patients, it is not a common practice in Hong Kong. As the administration rate of music therapy relies heavily on the knowledge of the nurses (Kwekkeboom, 2008). Therefore, this paper aims at providing evidence on the use of music therapy. In the hope of a clinical guideline, it can increase the administration rate of music therapy for cancer pain management in clinical setting. Apart from the clinical guideline, an implementation and evaluation plan on music therapy will also be discussed in this paper. There will be a full description from preparation to evaluation. Nurses can make use of this reference guide to provide music therapy for their cancer patients in respect to pain management. However, pain can become chronic due to a multitude of pathophysiological states, such as: trauma, inflammation, neural injury, viral infection, cancer, autoimmune diseases and vascular and metabolic disorders. These pathological states can trigger alterations of the pain pathways that can lead to hypersensitivity, and in such circumstances, pain loses its protective role and instead, becomes persistent and debilitating affecting seriously to the quality of life of patients. Chronic pain is one of the most important health problems worldwide. It has been estimated that 10% of adults are diagnosed with chronic pain each year. However, despite the high prevalence of chronic pain, its management is still no fully satisfactory probably due to the variety of chronic pain conditions with different etiologies (neuropathic, visceral and musculoskeletal pain), and because their pathophysiological mechanisms are only partially known. Therefore, there is a huge need for new effective therapies for the control and/or prevention of the different types of chronic pain. Chronic pain is associated with plastic changes in pain circuits of the peripheral and central nervous system, including changes in the expression of ion channels, neurotransmitters and receptors. In addition, there is growing consensus on non-neuronal mechanisms that can amplify or resolve chronic pain, and cells traditionally thought to act just as coordinators of the inflammatory response (such as immune and glial cells) are now accepted as real modulators of pain signaling. In this regard, animal models of persistent pain, such as models of neuropathic and visceral pain and models of arthritis, are helping to elucidate our understanding of the pathogenesis of chronic pain and make it possible to test experimental treatments.
