There are various types of psychiatric conditions and disorders such as depression, dissociative disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety disorders, paraphilic disorders, and bipolar disorder. Maintaining a good lifestyle is critical for the overall physical and mental well-being of any person, which can be achieved through exercise, good nutrition, work-life balance, and getting enough sleep. Lifestyle psychiatry deals with the treatment of psychiatric disorders that are a result of unhealthy lifestyle choices. In order to assist people in managing their psychiatric disorders, it uses an integrated and holistic approach to health, which includes suggestions for sleep, exercise, practicing mindfulness, and nutritious diet. It also entails incorporating techniques such as meditation, yoga, and tai chi, which are known to help prevent and lessen the symptoms of mental illness. This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of lifestyle psychiatry and the recent researches in this field. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by it.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a substantial increase in both academic and clinical interest around how ‘lifestyle behaviors’, such as exercise, sleep and diet, can influence mental health. The aim of this Research Topic is to produce a novel body of work contributing towards the field of ‘Lifestyle Psychiatry’; i.e. the use of lifestyle interventions in the treatment of mental disorders. In this way, the Research Topic aims to (a) present important ‘behavioral targets’ for lifestyle modification in public health and/or clinical settings, and (b) examine the efficacy and implementation of lifestyle interventions for people with mental health conditions. Collectively, this research presented within this Research Topic can increase understanding and inform evidence-based practice of ‘Lifestyle Psychiatry’, while providing clear directions for future research required to take the field forward.

Book excerpt: A major field in the worlds of education, training, and social sciences is the field where learners are inculcated with special interests in society and the relationships between individuals in society. Social science has always been an important instrument that allows us to gain an understanding of social phenomena and changes by providing commentaries, producing explanations, and attempting to synthesize a diversity of information sets to formulate theories. However, as changes take place in nearly every aspect of the modern world at an increasing speed, there quickly emerges new factors that have never been incorporated into the analytical framework in recent decades. Modern Perspectives and Current Trends in Asian Education, Psychology, and Sociology presents the current trends in education, psychology, and sociology. It serves as a collection of empirical research and academic recommendations that are current and contemporary. Covering topics such as learner identity, employee performance, and organizational identification and trust, this major reference work is an essential resource for educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, government officials, librarians, sociologists, psychologists, students of higher education, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Psychiatry is arguably the most misunderstood specialty in modern medicine and psychiatrists are often thought of as part physician, part confessor, part police officer, and part shaman. In Demystifying Psychiatry, two eminent psychiatrists offer an illuminating look at the entire field, offering a clear and informative portrait of a medical specialty often clouded in myth. Zorumski and Rubin range from a basic discussion of what psychiatry is, to the types of illnesses psychiatrists treat, the training of psychiatrists, the treatment of psychiatric disorders (covering medications, psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, electroconvulsive therapy, and much more), and how families can help with treatment. They caution the consumer about practices that should raise red flags. The book also covers new trends in psychiatry and explores the future of the field, predicting that major advances in genetics and neuroscience will lead to rapid and amazing changes in psychiatry. The book concludes with extensive reference materials that will be valuable both to general readers and medical practitioners.

Book excerpt: I was asked and, alas, with little reflection on the magnitude of the task, thoughtlessly consented, to take on the 'simple' job of writing a preface to the collection of essays comprising this volume. That I was asked to carry out this simple task was probably due to one consideration: I was the main representative of the host institution (Clark University) for the 1991 ISTP Conference, at which the talks, foreshadowing and outlining the 'extended remarks' here printed, were originally presented, and hence, as a token of gratitude, I was vouchsafed the honor of setting the stage. It did not dawn on me, until I began piecemeal to receive and accumulate, over a period of months, the remarkably diverse and heterogeneous essays precipitated by the conference, how mind-boggling it would be to pen a preface pertinent to such an aggregate of prima/acie unrelated articles. Typically, prefaces to collections of essays from different hands are attempts by the prefator or a pride of prefators to provide an overview, a concise map, of the complex terrain which readers are invited to enter; or to direct the attention of potential readers to what the editors take to be the essential or central themes of each of the variegated articles: a practice which, not infrequently and often not unjustifiably, irritates and even enrages individual authors, who object to the complexity, profundity, and nuanced character of their thought being reduced to clicMs and editorial equivalents of sound bites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Determinants of Mental Health aims to fill the gap that exists in the psychiatric, scholarly, and policy-related literature on the social determinants of mental health: those factors stemming from where we learn, play, live, work, and age that impact our overall mental health and well-being. The editors and an impressive roster of chapter authors from diverse scholarly backgrounds provide detailed information on topics such as discrimination and social exclusion; adverse early life experiences; poor education; unemployment, underemployment, and job insecurity; income inequality, poverty, and neighborhood deprivation; food insecurity; poor housing quality and housing instability; adverse features of the built environment; and poor access to mental health care. This thought-provoking book offers many beneficial features for clinicians and public health professionals: Clinical vignettes are included, designed to make the content accessible to readers who are primarily clinicians and also to demonstrate the practical, individual-level applicability of the subject matter for those who typically work at the public health, population, and/or policy level. Policy implications are discussed throughout, designed to make the content accessible to readers who work primarily at the public health or population level and also to demonstrate the policy relevance of the subject matter for those who typically work at the clinical level. All chapters include five to six key points that focus on the most important content, helping to both prepare the reader with a brief overview of the chapter's main points and reinforce the "take-away" messages afterward. In addition to the main body of the book, which focuses on selected individual social determinants of mental health, the volume includes an in-depth overview that summarizes the editors' and their colleagues' conceptualization, as well as a final chapter coauthored by Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States, that serves as a "Call to Action," offering specific actions that can be taken by both clinicians and policymakers to address the social determinants of mental health. The editors have succeeded in the difficult task of balancing the individual/clinical/patient perspective and the population/public health/community point of view, while underscoring the need for both groups to work in a unified way to address the inequities in twenty-first century America. The Social Determinants of Mental Health gives readers the tools to understand and act to improve mental health and reduce risk for mental illnesses for individuals and communities. Students preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) will also benefit from this book, as the MCAT in 2015 will test applicants' knowledge of social determinants of health. The social determinants of mental health are not distinct from the social determinants of physical health, although they deserve special emphasis given the prevalence and burden of poor mental health.
