Download or read book Current Topics in Human Genetics written by Hong-wen Deng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 963 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analogies play a fundamental role in science. To understand how and why, at a given moment, a certain analogy was used, one has to know the specific, historical circumstances under which the new idea was developed. This historical background is never presented in scientific articles and quite rarely in books. For the general reader, the undergraduate or graduate student who learns the subject for the first time, but also for the practitioner who looks for inspiration or who wants to understand what his colleague working in another field does, these historical circumstances can be fascinating and useful. This book discusses a series of analogy effects in subatomic physics, the prediction and theory of which the author has contributed to in the last 50 years. These phenomena are presented at a level accessible to the non-specialist, without formulae but with emphasis on the personal and historical background: memoirs of meetings, discussions and correspondence with collaborators and colleagues. As such, besides its scientific aspects, the book constitutes an absorbing witness account of a holocaust survivor who subsequently illegally crossed the Iron Curtain to escape communist persecution.

Download or read book Hot Topics in Cell Biology written by José Becerra and published by Chartridge Books Oxford. This book was released on 2012 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary This book is a definitive overview of the current 'state of the art' in cell biology. It is based on papers presented by leading researchers at the Spanish Society for Cell Biology's XIV Congress - a Congress that strives to achieve scientific excellence. Each participant was asked to prepare a 'mini review' of current and likely future development in their area of research. This book is based on those reviews. As such, it is therefore an analysis of current and future trends. Key Features Contains contributions from some of the world's leading researchers. The book is multidisciplinary, covering almost all topics in cell biology: from basic to applied cell biology, and a wide variety of models: from in vitro to vivo models, ranging from fish to rodents and humans. Each 'mini review' is an easy-read piece, describing the state of the art on a topic with clear language and in a summary format. The mini review format makes the book attractive not only to readers involved in cell biology research and teaching, but also professionals from other disciplines and students. The book takes a truly multidisciplinary approach; it covers a wide array of topics, and the book reflects how cell biology interacts with other disciplines The Editors Jose Becerra is Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Málaga (Spain) since 1989. Book Synopsis Topics in Optimal Transportation by : Cédric Villani
Download or read book Topics in Optimal Transportation written by Cédric Villani and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of mass transportation with its many—and sometimes unexpected—applications. In a novel approach to the subject, the book both surveys the topic and includes a chapter of problems, making it a particularly useful graduate textbook. In 1781, Gaspard Monge defined the problem of “optimal transportation” (or the transferring of mass with the least possible amount of work), with applications to engineering in mind. In 1942, Leonid Kantorovich applied the newborn machinery of linear programming to Monge's problem, with applications to economics in mind. In 1987, Yann Brenier used optimal transportation to prove a new projection theorem on the set of measure preserving maps, with applications to fluid mechanics in mind. Each of these contributions marked the beginning of a whole mathematical theory, with many unexpected ramifications. Nowadays, the Monge-Kantorovich problem is used and studied by researchers from extremely diverse horizons, including probability theory, functional analysis, isoperimetry, partial differential equations, and even meteorology. Originating from a graduate course, the present volume is intended for graduate students and researchers, covering both theory and applications. Readers are only assumed to be familiar with the basics of measure theory and functional analysis.
Book Synopsis The Geography of Transport Systems by : Jean-Paul Rodrigue
Download or read book The Geography of Transport Systems written by Jean-Paul Rodrigue and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.

Download or read book Current Topics in Bioenergetics written by D. Rao Sanadi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Bioenergetics, Volume 6 provides information pertinent to the phenomenon of energy transduction. This book covers a wide variety of topics, including photosynthesis, muscle contraction, transport across membranes, and oxidative phosphorylation. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the solute transport functions of membrane vesicles from kidney and intestine. This text then examines the specialized calcium transport system of mitochondria from both mechanistic and biological viewpoints. Other chapters consider the energy-transducing mechanisms in bacteria and chromoplast from the standpoint of mechanism. This book discusses as well ionophores and channel formers as powerful tools in the study of membrane function. The final chapter deals with the metabolic link between fundamental cell physiological events, such as hormonal perturbation of metabolism and cell development, on the one hand, and an altered ability of mitochondria to transport Ca2+, on the other. This book is a valuable resource for bioenergeticists, biochemists, biologists, and microbiologists.

This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With billions of dollars of investment and events like DARPA’s Grand Challenges automated driving technology has been making its way toward commercialization. While the enabling technology for SAE Level 4 and 5 automated vehicles (AV) has not yet matured, specific restricted-use models such as “robo-taxis” and automated truck convoying show great promise. Now, cities are across the world are looking to AVs to solve their public transportation issues. With low speeds and fixed route, public transportation is an ideal application for AVs. From a business angle, AVs could leverage existing public transport models and infrastructure while providing superior quality of service for disadvantaged communities. Yet, dense urban environments—which would benefit from automated transportation the most—present unique challenges and public sector requirements. This SAE EDGE™ Research Report by Dr. Rahul Razdan examines the divergent applications and experiences of four urban cities as they engage with AV technology for their specific purposes: Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida; Tallinn; and Singapore.
