Book excerpt: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is detected in approximately 5% of children and describes a condition in which motor coordination is below the level expected given a child’s age or opportunity for learning. Children with DCD display fine and/or gross motor difficulties which persist into adulthood and cannot be better explained by a medical or neurological condition. The difficulties that individuals with DCD experience have a significant impact on activities of daily living, scholastic achievement, inter-personal relationships, and employment. Motor difficulties such as these have been poorly defined and are poorly understood by healthcare and education professionals, rendering treatments and care more difficult. European guidelines from 2012 and further revisions in 2019, have helped to clarify the diagnostic issues and there has been a significant growth in research in this field over the last four decades. A search for the topic ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder’ using Web of Science yielded 4153 publications with 69% of these published in the last 10 years alone. Despite this growth there still are pending questions in research regarding our understanding of the etiology, the co-occurrence with other developmental disorders, and the lived experience.

Book excerpt: An exciting new line of research that investigates the impact of one’s own hands on visual processing has flourished in the past several years. Specifically, several studies have demonstrated that objects near the hands receive prioritized attention, enhanced perceptual sensitivity, altered figure-ground assignment, prolonged and detail-oriented processing, and improved visual working memory. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the visual system reveals a new pattern of processing when one's hands are in proximity of viewed objects. Therefore, the vast majority of studies on visual processing, in which one's hands are kept away from the stimuli, may constitute but one side of a more complex story of the inner workings of the visual system. With several consistent behavioral demonstrations of hand-altered vision now in the literature, the present challenge facing this growing field, and the aim of this Research Topic, is four-pronged: 1) Isolate and elucidate the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms of hand-altered vision; 2) Map the parameters and conditions of hand-nearness that permit/prevent the onset or maintenance of hand-altered vision; 3) Determine the consequences of hand-altered vision for higher-level cognition and assess its applied potential (e.g., as a neuropsychological intervention); and, 4) Present a cohesive and predictive theoretical account of hand-altered vision. We welcome submissions that fit into any one (or a combination) of the above domains. For behavioral research, we particularly encourage submissions that are relevant to the advancement of our understanding of the neural mechanisms of hand-altered vision (e.g., demonstrations that might corroborate or disconfirm proposed neural systems).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when scholars and coaches advised athletes to avoid strength training because it was believed that it would make them slow and muscle-bound and would thereby have a negative impact on their athletic performance. Another concern was that strength training would have a detrimental effect on joints and ligaments. Athletes faced the dilemma of needing strength to perform at a certain level without the increase in muscle weight caused by strength training. Science seemed to prove that gaining muscle weight makes athletes slower since force, (body) mass and acceleration interact with each other (f= m × a). Based on this formula a (acceleration) decreases, when m (body mass) is increased. Many athletes already knew from personal experience that in fact this was not inevitably the case. If the increase in body weight is mainly caused by hypertrophy of fast-twitch muscle fibre, athletes can indeed move faster even when there is a slight increase in body weight. Since muscle hypertrophy often goes along with a reduction of body fat, body weight changes may be negligible. In the meantime, the beneficial effects of strength training for many aspects of fitness and performance have been proven. It has become generally accepted that resistance training not only improves performance of competitive athletes in many sports but also offers multiple health benefits. Strength training is a topic that is being researched and studied from many different perspectives as shown in the diverse contributions to this book. These aspects include: Strength testing in basketball, eccentrics and HIT, applying social cognitive theories of behaviour to explain resistance exercise participation, muscle conditioning for soccer players, protein supplementation strategies, repetition speed and TUT in single- vs. multiple-set training, insights gained from kinematic and kinetic analyses of movement which make it obvious that children are not miniature adults, outcome-effects of high intensity pre- vs. post-exhaustion in hypertrophy training, and the effects of high intensity interval training on insulin action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering preventive, non-invasive, and natural treatments, Textbook of Natural Medicine, 4th Edition offers more than just alternative medicine. It promotes an integrated practice that can utilize natural medicine, traditional Western medicine, or a combination of both in a comprehensive, scientific treatment plan. Based on a combination of philosophy and clinical studies, Textbook of Natural Medicine helps you provide health care that identifies and controls the underlying causes of disease, is supportive of the body's own healing processes, and is considerate of each patient's unique biochemistry. Internationally known authors Joseph Pizzorno and Michael Murray include detailed pharmacologic information on herbs and supplements, plus evidence-based coverage of diseases and conditions to help you make accurate diagnoses and provide effective therapy. Comprehensive, unique coverage makes this book the gold standard in natural medicine. A scientific presentation includes the science behind concepts and treatments, and discusses Western medical treatments and how they can work with natural medicine in a comprehensive treatment plan; if natural medicine is not effective, this book recommends the Western treatment. Coverage of pharmacology of natural medicines includes the uses and potential dangers of nearly 80 herbal medicines, special nutrients, and other natural agents, addressing topics such as general information, chemical composition, history, pharmacology, clinical applications dosage, and toxicology. In-depth, evidence-based coverage of 73 diseases and conditions includes key diagnostic criteria, pathophysiology of diseases, and therapeutic rationales. Coverage of potential interactions between drugs, herbs, and supplements ensures the safest possible use for each of 79 herbs and supplements. Diagnostic procedures include practical, easy-to-follow descriptions of evidence-based techniques plus discussions of clinical application of diet analysis, food allergy testing, immune function assessment, fatty acid profiling, hair mineral analysis, and other diagnostic approaches. Common therapeutic modalities are described and reviewed, including botanical medicine, nutritional therapy, therapeutic fasting, exercise therapy, hydrotherapy, counseling, acupuncture, homeopathy, and soft tissue manipulation. Coverage of syndromes and therapies helps in understanding the underlying causes of diseases by discussing topics such as food reactions, functional toxicology, sports nutrition, stress management, and breathing pattern disorders. Coverage of the philosophy of natural medicine includes its history and background, with discussions of toxicity, detoxification, and scientific documentation of the healing actions of nature and natural substances. Internationally known authors Joseph Pizzorno and Michael Murray and more than 90 expert contributors provide material that is up to date, accurate, and informed. More than 10,000 research literature citations show that the content is based on science rather than opinions or anecdotes. 13 useful appendices offer quick lookup of frequently used charts, handouts, and information.

Book excerpt: An evidence-based scientific understanding of factors determining Olympic winter sports performance, recent changes, the evolution in training content and methods, the improvement in technology as well as the occurrence of injury and illness is required. On one hand, this would provide the opportunity to translate research to practice. On the other hand, to guide the practice of Olympic winter sports with the ultimate goal of improving the performance. Certainly, the continued evolution of Olympic winter sports has contributed to an enormous accumulation of knowledge, evidence, and relevant training technologies. Sports sciences, including physiology, conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, coaching, psychology, as well as sport technology, history and social sciences, have much to contribute to the preparation of the athletes in the Olympic winter sports. Consequently, this Research Topic sought to provide a platform of contributions to set out a comprehensive framework of the components that should be addressed when developing training plans leading to elite Olympic winter sports performance. Overall, the papers were all directed toward a better understanding of physiological, biomechanical, and training factors related to different Olympic winter sports disciplines: cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, speed skating, snowboarding, and ski-cross.

Book excerpt: This book provides an extensive guide for exercise and health professionals, students, scientists, sport coaches, athletes of various sports and those with a general interest in concurrent aerobic and strength training. Following a brief historical overview of the past decades of research on concurrent training, in section 1 the epigenetic as well as physiological and neuromuscular differences of aerobic and strength training are discussed. Thereafter, section 2 aims at providing an up-to-date analysis of existing explanations for the interference phenomenon, while in section 3 the training-methodological difficulties of combined aerobic and strength training are elucidated. In section 4 and 5, the theoretical considerations reviewed in previous sections will then be practically applied to specific populations, ranging from children and elderly to athletes of various sports. Concurrent Aerobic and Strength Training: Scientific Basics and Practical Applications is a novel book on one of the “hot topics” of exercise training. The Editors' highest priority is to make this book an easily understandable and at the same time scientifically supported guide for the daily practice.
