Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the International Workshop on the Cur rent Problems in Condensed Matter: Theory and Experiment, held at Cocoyoc, More los, Mexico, during January 5-9, 1997. The participants had come from Argentina, Austria, Chile, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, and the USA. The presentations at the Workshop provided state-of-art reviews of many of the most important problems, currently under study, in condensed matter. Equally important to all the participants in the workshop was the fact that we had come to honor a friend, Karl Heinz Bennemann, on his sixty-fifth birthday. This Festschrift is just a small measure of recognition of the intellectualleadership of Professor Bennemann in the field and equally important, as a sincere tribute to his qualities as an exceptional friend, college and mentor. Those who have had the privilege to work closely with Karl have been deeply touched by Karl's inquisitive scientific mind as well as by bis kindness and generosity.

Book excerpt: Our understanding of the physical world was revolutionized in the twentieth century — the era of 'modern physics'. Three texts presenting the foundations and frontiers of modern physics have been published by the second author. Many problems are included in these books. The current authors have published solutions manuals for two of the texts Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations and Topics in Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations. The present book provides solutions to the over 180 problems in the remaining text Advanced Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations. This is the most challenging material, ranging over advanced quantum mechanics, angular momentum, scattering theory, lagrangian field theory, symmetries, Feynman rules, quantum electrodynamics (QED), higher-order processes, path-integrals, and canonical transformations for quantum systems; several appendices supply important details. This solutions manual completes the modern physics series, whose goal is to provide a path through the principal areas of theoretical physics of the twentieth century in sufficient detail so that students can obtain an understanding and an elementary working knowledge of the field. While obtaining familiarity with what has gone before would seem to be a daunting task, these volumes should help the dedicated student to find that job less challenging, and even enjoyable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume offers a state of the art overview of fast and robust solvers for the Helmholtz equation. The book consists of three parts: new developments and analysis in Helmholtz solvers, practical methods and implementations of Helmholtz solvers, and industrial applications. The Helmholtz equation appears in a wide range of science and engineering disciplines in which wave propagation is modeled. Examples are: seismic inversion, ultrasone medical imaging, sonar detection of submarines, waves in harbours and many more. The partial differential equation looks simple but is hard to solve. In order to approximate the solution of the problem numerical methods are needed. First a discretization is done. Various methods can be used: (high order) Finite Difference Method, Finite Element Method, Discontinuous Galerkin Method and Boundary Element Method. The resulting linear system is large, where the size of the problem increases with increasing frequency. Due to higher frequencies the seismic images need to be more detailed and, therefore, lead to numerical problems of a larger scale. To solve these three dimensional problems fast and robust, iterative solvers are required. However for standard iterative methods the number of iterations to solve the system becomes too large. For these reason a number of new methods are developed to overcome this hurdle. The book is meant for researchers both from academia and industry and graduate students. A prerequisite is knowledge on partial differential equations and numerical linear algebra.

This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its lifesaving role, addiction treatment and care are often among the first domains to lose resources when a crisis strikes. Across the world disruptions in addiction-related care during the Covid-19 pandemic, armed conflict, or radical political change have been documented. But what happens after the crisis is typically unknown. How do addiction-related problems change during a crisis, and what are the responses at individual and societal level? How do crises affect causes, prevalence, incidence, or severity of addiction in different regions and populations? Does the addiction care system permanently collapse or is the breakdown temporary and reversible? How does a crisis evolve and what happens to addiction care services and their beneficiaries over time? Is residual damage to addiction care services inevitable or can a crisis create opportunities for positive change at individual, organizational, and/or system level? Are harms and benefits (un)equally distributed among different addiction stakeholder groups? And finally, what does a ‘new normal’ look like in addiction and addiction care, and what (new) norms underpin it? These questions not only encompass the importance of such a topic, but also the implications on public health that are applicable worldwide that need to be addressed.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 10 detailed tables ‘War is often depicted in the textbooks as a well-orchestrated, albeit violent, exercise in which opposing units strive to achieve tactical and strategic objectives. That each side will suffer casualties in the process is taken for granted; they are the inevitable, if regretable, consequence of such a deadly undertaking. That each side is almost certain to suffer casualties inflicted by its own forces is not generally taken for granted. Yet, in each of America’s wars, especially those of the twentieth century, a significant number of soldiers have been killed or wounded as the result of friendly fire. The fact that the percentage of casualties resulting from friendly fire from World War I through Vietnam has been extremely low does not make the accidental killing or wounding of one’s own troops any less tragic or unpalatable. Nor does it offer much consolation to the commander responsible for the lives of his troops or to the soldier who runs the risk of falling victim to the fire of his own forces. To be sure, each branch of the Army and each of the Armed Services employ measures calculated to prevent incidents of friendly fire...Before one can undertake a serious and comprehensive analysis of friendly fire, these data must be found and brought together in one place. In Amicicide: The Problem of Friendly Fire in Modern War, LTC Charles R. Shrader has taken a major step toward the compilation of these data. In his well-informed narrative, he draws tentative conclusions about the causes and effects of friendly fire and offers recommendations for those who expect to study the subject further. He has, in short, produced a superb reference book and a springboard for a deeper and more comprehensive analysis of this grim and complex problem.’-Foreword

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complement system is an important innate immune surveillance network that has a key role in protecting our bodies against pathogens and other threats. It is a highly complex system consisting of approximately 50 soluble and cell surface-bound proteins that interact to eliminate danger signals. These signals include factors such as invading microorganisms, necrotic cells, and immune complexes. Furthermore, complement can link innate and adaptive immune responses by regulating T cell and B cell responses. The complement system is tightly regulated to avoid uncontrolled activation. Dysregulation of the complement system has been linked to numerous diseases, both rare and common. Uncontrolled or exaggerated activation can lead to life-threatening conditions such as dysregulation of coagulation, fibrinolysis, systemic inflammation and shock, and possible failure of a variety of organs such as the eyes, kidneys, skin, brain, and vascular system. In recent years, the complement system has gained increased interest, especially as a promising candidate for therapeutic intervention. Eculizumab, the first approved complement inhibitor, is highly effective for treating atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Many more drug candidates are currently evaluated in ongoing clinical trials.
