Book Synopsis World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance by : Bob Deacon
Download or read book World-Regional Social Policy and Global Governance written by Bob Deacon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the case for and the prospects of the development of world-regional social policies as integral elements of a pluralistic, equitable and effective system of global governance. Focusing on transnational regionalism, this book examines the trajectory and crossing over of the three strands of scholarly analysis within the past decade which have given rise to this volume: the perceived negative impact of neo-liberal globalisation upon national social policy; the need for but the difficulty of securing reforms in the institutions of global social governance; and the increasing salience of the world-regional level of governance in handling cross-border issues. The authors develop an intellectual and research agenda that will also inform the political development of an international programme concerned with the social policy dimensions of regional governance. Combining the perspectives and collective expertise of a team of international scholars and activists, the book features: Theoretical and policy cases for a focus on regionalism and social policy A mapping and analysis of social policy dimensions of regional integration processes and formations in four continents An assessment of the regional dimensions of global agencies, in particular of the UN (ILO, WHO, UNESCO, UNDP) including the approach to regional social policy of the UN Regional Economic Commissions and Development Banks An articulation of a multi-levelled conceptualisation of global social governance within which regional associations of countries plays a significant part. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of social policy, development studies, international relations and political science, especially those focused on the public policy dimensions of globalisation, regionalisation and international development.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a shift away from thinking of U.S. energy problems as long-term technology and resource issues and toward a greater focus on shorter term problems of the insecurity of oil imports. In February 1980, with the impacts of the 1979 Iranian revolution fresh in everyone's mind, we formed a study group with the objective to use quantitative analytical techniques to study the impacts of oil supply disruptions and the kinds of national policies that could help reduce those impacts.

Book Synopsis Environmental Security and Environmental Management: The Role of Risk Assessment by : Benoit Morel
Download or read book Environmental Security and Environmental Management: The Role of Risk Assessment written by Benoit Morel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of “environmental security” has emerged as one basis for understanding international conflicts. This phrase can mean a variety of things. It can signify security issues stemming from environmental concerns or conflicting needs, or it can mean that the environment is treated as a resource for the long term, and the question is what should be done today to preserve the quality of the environment in the future. In the same way that energy security is about ensuring access to energy for the long run, it can also mean that pressing environmental concerns create a situation where different countries and communities are forced to collaboratively design a unified response, even if cooperation is not generally in the logic of their relations. Over the last several years, the authors of this book and their colleagues have tried to demonstrate the power of risk assessment and decision analysis as valuable tools that decision makers should use for a broad range of environmental problems, including environmental security. Risk analysis is almost more a state of mind or a way of looking at problems than it is a kind of algorithm or a set of recipes. It projects a kind of rationality on problems and forces a certain degree of quantitative rigor, as opposed to the all too common tendency of making environmental recommendations based on anecdotal evidence.
