It starts by exploring the definition, history and etiology of the construct. The briefs then discusses the importance of research and presents new research which sheds light on why alexithymia is characterized by poor well-being. The research strongly suggests that people who score high in alexithymia are low in aspects of positive well-being such as happiness, life satisfaction, and positive affect, and high in aspects of negative well-being, such as depression and negative affect. Next, the book examines the correlates of alexithymia and the latter’s relation with personality and subjective well-being. Although there has been an increased interest in human flourishing, and even though research in positive psychology has included personality, there has been little application of positive psychology to people with deficits in emotional processing including people with alexithymia. This briefs fills that gap.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the description of agenesis of the corpus callosum, a congenital malformation of midline structures in the brain that may be regarded as a natural model of the "split-brain. " First reported by Rei! in 1812, this anomaly has since been described by several investigators. Interest in this malformation was revived in the 1970s by studies of interhemispheric transfer in Bogen and Vogel's commissurotomized patients and the subsequent findings by Sperry that acallosal patients were devoid of the typical disconnection deficits found in patients with surgical transection of the corpus callosum. Since this seminal work, the bulk of neuropsychological research on callosal agenesis has focused on the particulars of interhemispheric transfer and integration. An ever-growing literature has emerged on the subject, attempting to specify the extent and limits of neural plasticity in a nervous system that has evolved in the absence of the most important interhemispheric pathway. Whilst callosal agenesis proves to be an excellent model of cerebral plasticity, it has to be pointed out that this anomaly is often associated with other malformations and neurological diseases that may result in different degrees of mental retardation or other cognitive and sensorimotor deficits. In this context, neurological research on callosal agenesis has concentrated on the description of various syndromes associated with this pathology as well as on the attempt to specify its neurobehavioral manifestations.

Book excerpt: Alexithymia is a multifaceted construct that is characterized by several facets, including difficulties identifying one’s feelings; difficulties describing one’s feelings to others; and an externally focused, utilitarian cognitive style. In the long-term, higher alexithymia scores represent risks factors for poorer mental and physical health outcomes. There is, however, a lack of systematic understanding of the underlying processes that can explain these vulnerabilities. This book shows that the facets of alexithymia influence several aspects of how one perceives and responds to neutral and emotional situations, by impacting multiple cognitive processes (attention, appraisals, memory, language and behavior). The effects are influenced by context, with some situations leading to deficits in emotion responding, and others that contribute to emotional over-responding. The book shows the importance of drawing better connections amongst multiple processes, toward disentangling them and revealing where early processes have impacts on later processes. A lack of correspondence between processes, as well as amongst alexithymia facets is expected to lead to ineffective and inflexible emotion regulation, thereby posing elevated risks for physical and mental illness. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Cognition and Emotion.
