Book excerpt: Excerpt from Currency Reform Improvement Not Depreciation So many writers on the Currency have recommended its depreciation, as the best means of correcting our national ills, and the public have become so tired of this panacea, that it appears necessary, to secure attention to a work on Currency having no such object, to state so even on the title-page. The following views, with the exception of the proposition to Nationalize the Currency, have neither been proposed nor adopted, as far as the Author is aware, by any other writer. The idea, however, of Nationalizing the Currency, has been taken up by different parties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reform of the Currency Hence the national banks were bound to exercise some con trol over the business and especially the' issues of the local banks. Both of them did exercise such control. The means employed by both banks were identical, consisting, as Gallatin says, in receiving the notes of all those which are solvent, and requiring payment from time to time without suffering the bal anecs due by any to become too large. To do this the banks of the United States had to be creditors of the state banks. This they were enabled to be, first, because they received the government revenues as the depositaries of the goverment, and second, because of their possession of branches. As deposit aries of the government they received immense quantities of state bank paper. These were then presented to the state banks for payment. In case control was exercised by a branch, it was done by issuing the notes of the branch in the neighborhood of a state bank, and receiving state bank notes on deposit for these issues. The branch then presented the state bank notes to the issuing bank for redemption. In both cases, the state bank pos sessed no means of obtaining branch bank notes to anything like the amount necessary to act as a set-off to its own issues. The state banks were not receivers of the revenue, and they could not get possession of any considerable quantity of branch bank notes because these served as an excellent means of re mittance for individuals who wished to forward funds to other parts of the country. Persons holding state bank notes were always willing to exchange them for paper of the bank of the United States, while nobody wished to exchange notes of the United States bank for state bank notes. Consequently, the branches always had the means of checking the state banks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Question Concerning the Depreciation of Our Currency Stated and Examined It was indeed for the House of Commons to consider whether they would appoint such \a Committee at all, or refer such a subject to such a mode of examination and if it was foreseen that the promulgation of an opinion, such as that which the Committee have formed, would be attended with publick mischief, (which I however am very far from thinking) it might, in that case, be matter of regret that the House should have consented to its appointment. But, even in that case, nothing can be more unjust than to impute as blame to the members of the Committee, acting under the orders of the House, the due discharge of a duty which the House had thought proper to impose upon them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Solution of the Currency Question IT is almost universally conceded that our National Currency, as at present in operation, does not meet the requirements of the community at all times; neither do the holders of Bank Notes possess an indefeasible security. The system is therefore unsatisfactory, and for many years there has existed an urgent demand for its reform, with an increasing conviction of its necessity. But how, and upon what basis, that-reform is to be effected has yet to be determined. The subject is of the utmost importance to a commercial community, for it controls and enters into the every day trans actions of the capitalist, the manufacturer, and the merchant. Indeed, there is no class of society in this empire that it does not deeply concern. It naturally excites astonishment in every mind of ordinary reflection, that the method by which a sound and sufficient currency may be permanently established is a question yet to be solved. The most profound writers on political economy, and many others, have endeavoured to do so, and many of them have given evidence of deep research, and profound thought. Yet, after all, they have left their subject as much confused as they found it. Many schemes have been proposed, but, as soon as known, have been condemned by universal consent. In the long run we are all dead." -John Maynard Keynes, A Tract on Monetary Reform (1923) A Tract on Monetary Reform (1923), by British economist John Maynard Keynes, is a masterly analysis of the world monetary situation at the beginning of the twentieth century. Keynes stated the importance of stable domestic prices and a stable currency for a strong economy, while arguing against the gold standard, which at that time was used for the US dollar and many other currencies. Britain abandoned the gold standard in 1931-after it had re-established it in 1925-and the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933. A Tract on Monetary Reform is essential reading for anyone interested in Keynes' theories and for students of economics or economic history.

Book excerpt: At the close of the Second World War, when industrialized nations faced serious trade and financial imbalances, delegates from forty-four countries met in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in order to reconstruct the international monetary system. In this volume, three generations of scholars and policy makers, some of whom participated in the 1944 conference, consider how the Bretton Woods System contributed to unprecedented economic stability and rapid growth for 25 years and discuss the problems that plagued the system and led to its eventual collapse in 1971. The contributors explore adjustment, liquidity, and transmission under the System; the way it affected developing countries; and the role of the International Monetary Fund in maintaining a stable rate. The authors examine the reasons for the System's success and eventual collapse, compare it to subsequent monetary regimes, such as the European Monetary System, and address the possibility of a new fixed exchange rate for today's world.
