Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located at the confluence of Wills Creek and the Potomac River, Cumberland, Maryland, is known as the Queen City of the Alleghenies. Because of the unique geography of the mountain passes, Cumberland became a transportation nexus between the Eastern Seaboard and the inland bounty of the United States. The National Road, a federal project initiated by Pres. Thomas Jefferson, passes through Cumberland, as does the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and Canal. Rail lines and roads stretch out west, south, and north to industrial, agricultural, and natural resource areas. Regional short-line railroads served to move coal to the loading docks of the canal in Cumberland. Today the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad features steam-power excursions from the old Western Maryland Station next to the canal basin, while 6,000-horsepower diesels haul heavy freight through the CSX Yards in South Cumberland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less than thirty years after Lewis and Clark completed their epic journey, Prince Maximilian of Wied—a German naturalist—and his entourage set off on their own daring expedition across North America. Accompanying the prince on this 1832–34 voyage was Swiss artist Karl Bodmer, whose drawings and watercolors—designed to illustrate Maximilian’s journals—now rank among the great treasures of nineteenth-century American art. This lavishly illustrated book juxtaposes Bodmer’s landscape images with modern-day photographs of the same views, allowing readers to see what has changed, and what seems unchanged, since the time Maximilian and Bodmer made their storied trip up the Missouri River. To discover how the areas Bodmer depicted have changed over time, photographer Robert M. Lindholm and anthropologist W. Raymond Wood made several trips over a period of years, from 1985 to 2002, to locate and record the same sites—all the way from Boston Harbor, where Maximilian and Bodmer began their journey, to Fort McKenzie, in modern-day western Montana. Pairing sixty-seven Bodmer works side by side with Lindholm’s photographs of the same sites, this volume uses the comparison of old and new images to reveal alterations through time—and the encroachment of a built environment—across diverse landscapes. Karl Bodmer’s America Revisited is at once a tribute to the artistic achievements of a premier landscape artist and a photographer who followed in his footsteps, and a valuable record of America’s ever-changing environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greencastle-Antrim Revisited is the second installment of Bonnie A. and Kenneth B. Shockey's pictorial history of one of south-central Pennsylvania's most interesting communities. This edition covers events from the mid-19th century through the baby boomer decades of the 20th century. Industry, social life, and recreation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are given special attention. Among the images featured are many rare images from the Ziegler glass negative collection of the Allison-Antrim Museum and recently acquired photographs of the Irwin and Snively families. While these never before seen images document how the area looked in the later half of the 19th century, baby boomers will find great appeal in the photographs from the 1950s to the 1970s depicting "new" highway construction, businesses of the era, movie theaters, and local malt shops.

Mahanoy Area Revisited encompasses the years 1913-1963. These vintage photographs depict the history, culture, faith, tragedies, industry, beauty, and strength of this region as well as its people, which includes an Oscar winner, Victor Schertzinger, as well as the composer of the No. 1 hit "Once in Awhile," Michael (Slowitzky) Edwards, and the inventor of cable television, John (Walsonavich) Walson. The images of the Victoria Theater ("the Vic"), schools, parks, churches, businesses, collieries, and citizens present a rich and complex tapestry of a close-knit, vibrant community that includes Mahanoy City and surrounding villages or "patches" such as New Boston, Delano, St. Nicholas, and Barnesville.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island eventually known as Sea Isle was first purchased by Joseph Ludlam in 1692 for use as a grazing pasture. The island changed almost overnight when Charles K. Landis purchased it in 1880, intent on creating a seaside resort. After adding a railroad and hotels, tourists soon followed. The boardwalk hosted beach parties; clam bakes; and bicycle, sack, and even motorcycle races. Wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the back bays, commercial fishing companies shared the waters with casual anglers. Recreational sailing, yacht racing, and sport fishing have long been popular with Sea Isles year-round residents and visitors alike. Sea Isle City Revisited showcases the rich maritime and recreational history of this New Jersey coastal town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countering the Dickensian stereotypes, Orphanages Reconsidered portrays how three private orphanages in Baltimore responded to the need of poor, single parents for boarding schools for their children. These innovative institutions also served as pivotal community forces, rebuilding families by providing vocational training, keeping siblings together, and encouraging orphans to maintain close ties with relatives.Fastidious research shows how the institutions-Jewish, non-denominational Protestant, and Catholic-differed in their ethnic and religious priorities, their financial support, their staffing, and their relations with the community. Nurith Zmora embellishes her portraits with institutional records, letters from the children, and published autobiographies. Author note: Nurith Zmora is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Delaware.
