Book excerpt: The Partition of India resulted in a massive exodus of men, women and children from both East and West Pakistan to India in 1947.Even after the emergence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh, an independent democratic nation in 1971, the flow of migrants to the eastern states of India, namely West Bengal, Orissa, Assam and Tripura was not stemmed. The women among them, not only came along with their families, but also singly. Very often forced to accept the burden of a new refugee life, they began their struggle for survival and existence, fraught more often than not, with difficulty and adverse circumstances .The challenge sometimes became so acute, that there was a metamorphic change in their behaviour, thinking and attitude. The status of the women migrants under such circumstances is uncertain and precarious. This book, the outcome of the doctoral thesis at Jadavpur University, Kolkata is an attempt to present a picture of the status of women migrants from Bangladesh who have settled in the two states of West Bengal and Orissa after 1971, specifically, between 1971-2001.The position these women in the wider fabric of India society and their status at home and workplace have been studied, based on a primary survey in selected areas of West Bengal and Orissa, namely Nadia and Murshidabad in West Bengal and Kendrapara in Orissa where there are large settlements of migrants from Bangladesh. It is sincerely hoped that this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the fields of economics, demography and women studies.

Book excerpt: This volume takes stock of the current status of the comparatively new discipline of `Anthropological Demography', and discusses its major methods, its main strengths, and its chief limitations. It includes contributions from both mainstream demographers and foremost anthropologists, all stressing the necessity of a shared agenda for each discipline to progress successfully and avoid marginalization. While the unique research and personal satisfaction afforded by `participant observation' is described, the book also highlights the potential contribution to the understanding of demographic events of much more than the field methods of traditional anthropology. In particular, it stresses the insights possible from qualitative focus group interviews, from longitudinal studies and from a greater interest in `armchair' anthropology, in which demographers complement their quantitative findings with qualitative information and understanding gleaned from a careful reading of the anthropological literature, in the form of both ethnographies and anthropological theories. In addition, it stresses the larger world of the ideal anthropological demographer: a world that includes the cultural context of course, but also takes into account the historical and political forces that condition so much individual behaviour. But the book is also a critical venture. It includes therefore considerable discussion of the common limits of the purely anthropological approach for understanding demographic events and processes, especially from a larger policy perspective, at the same time as it emphasizes the crucial role of the anthropological approach to designing policy that is potentially effective as well as socially and culturally sensitive. It reiterates the often complementary role of anthropological demography and also discusses some specific questions in demographic research which it does not as yet seem to have the capacity to illuminate. The book is aimed primarily at demographers wishing to broaden their research agenda and deepen their understanding of demographic behaviour, but it also hopes to convert mainstream anthropologists to take a more active interest in demographic issues. Underlying this widespread problem is the puzzling fact that daughters have become vulnerable in a time of general improvement of welfare, female status and deep economic and social changes. The findings centre on a contradiction between the continued importance of the cultural factors which for so long have established that a son is necessary, and socio-economic changes that are challenging the importance of these very same factors. This contradiction entails an uncertainty over sons fulfilling expectations which has, rather than tilt the balance in favour of daughters, instead increased the relative importance of sons and intensified negative consequences for daughters. The original findings are based on set theoretic systematic comparisons of eight villages in Himachal Pradesh that facilitate a reconceptualization and an alternative analysis that takes contextual differences into account. It builds on extensive fieldwork and collection of both qualitative and quantitative data.
