Book Synopsis Working with the Ancestors by : Emily C. Donaldson
Download or read book Working with the Ancestors written by Emily C. Donaldson and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia, forest spirits share space with ancestral ruins and active agricultural plots, affecting land use and heritage preservation. As Marquesans continue their efforts to establish UNESCO World Heritage status, they grapple with questions about when sites should be preserved intact, when neglect is an appropriate option, and when deterioration resulting from local livelihoods should be accepted. In Working with the Ancestors Emily Donaldson considers how Marquesan perceptions of heritage and mana, or sacred power, have influenced the use of land in the islands and how both cultural and environmental sustainability can be achieved. The Marquesas’ relative geographical isolation and ecological richness are the backdrop for the confluence of international heritage preservation and sustainability efforts that affect both resources and Indigenous peoples. Donaldson demonstrates how anthropological concepts of embodiment, alienation, place, and power can inform global resource management, offering a new approach that integrates analyses of policy, practice, and heritage.

Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives on Conflict in Caribbean Societies of the Late 20th and Early 21st Centuries by : Patricia Donatien
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Conflict in Caribbean Societies of the Late 20th and Early 21st Centuries written by Patricia Donatien and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Perspectives on Conflict in Caribbean Societies of the Late 20th and Early 21st Centuries intervenes to enrich existing scholarship on postcolonial Caribbean literature and art. Using interdisciplinary, cultural studies and Caribbean cultural studies methodologies, in addition to more classical literary readings of works, this book adopts a fresh approach to conflict, bringing a variety of new perspectives to the analysis of conflict dynamics in the Caribbean. Focusing on issues of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as well as on contemporary representation and analysis of conflict related to other periods in the development of Caribbean societies, this volume provides explorations of conflict in the Caribbean region, in the transnational relationships between this region and North America, and in the transcolonial relationships between the French Caribbean and France. This bi-lingual publication will particularly appeal to scholars and students of Caribbean Literature in English and French, Postcolonial and African Diasporic Literatures and Cultures, Feminist Literary Studies, and Contemporary Art Studies. Critical Perspectives on Conflict in Caribbean Societies of the Late 20th and Early 21st Centuries offers studies of recent fiction and works of art by established and emerging Caribbean writers and artists. In addition, as articles are dedicated to discussions of particular authors, such as Earl Lovelace, Ramabai Espinet, Edwidge Danticat, Raphaël Confiant, Patrick Chamoiseau, Gerty Dambury, and Gisèle Pineau, the range of perspectives found in this volume covers fiction published by male and female writers from both the Francophone and Anglophone Caribbean.
Book Synopsis Jean-Marie Tjibaou, Kanak Witness to the World by : Eric Waddell
Download or read book Jean-Marie Tjibaou, Kanak Witness to the World written by Eric Waddell and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Marie Tjibaou is arguably the most important post–World War II Oceanic leader. His intellectual abilities, acute understanding of both Melanesian and European civilizations, stature as a statesman, commitment to nonviolence, and vision for Melanesia’s potential contributions to the global community have all contributed to the creation of a remarkable and enduring legacy. Until now, no substantial English-language study has existed of Tjibaou, who was assassinated in 1989. This intellectual biography of the Kanak (New Caledonia) leader takes an essentially chronological approach to his life—from his beginnings in the mountains of northern New Caledonia and his studies at the Sorbonne to his leadership of the independence movement in the Territory. The work focuses on the spiritual, cultural, and intellectual sources of Tjibaou’s ideas and actions as well as on those who were a source of inspiration to him. Particular attention is given to Tjibaou’s sense of service, the convergences and divergences he identified as existing between Melanesian and Western civilizations, and the impact of metropolitan French politics on the situation in the Territory. In addition, the book explores the fracture between the Grande Terre and the Loyalty Islands, one with deep historical roots that help explain why Tjibaou’s assassin, Djubelly Wéa, was not a "crazy fanatic" but the uh_product of a distinctive reality—with a very different cultural and political reading of New Caledonia’s destiny.
