Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, grade: 2,0, Corvinus University Budapest, language: English, abstract: Large numbers of Hungarians found themselves in a new country as a minority after the Trianon Treaty in 1920 when Hungary lost two thirds of its land and one third of its population. Minorities in East and Central Europe have a long history and for the most part they used to live together peacefully however increasing national identity in the 19th century challenged the lives of minorities. Countries try to homogenize their population although some minorities had been living there for a couple of hundred years already. This essay examines particularly the ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia with a brief background on Hungarian-Slovak history, problems and improvements Hungarians have faced especially since the existence of the Slovak Republic as of 1993 and how Hungary seeks to support its people as a kin-state. Additionally a short insight on the other side is given, namely on how Slovaks think about the Hungarian minority and how the Slovak minority lives in Hungary.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Sociology - Politics, Majorities, Minorities, grade: Bachelor Thesis, , course: American History - Ethnic minorities, language: English, abstract: Abstract This paper examines the different approaches taken by the governments of Slovakia(former Czechoslovakia), and the United States of America in addressing the issues of minority rights of Afro-Americans in the USA compared to the Romanies in Slovakia. It explains and compares the historical events and political measures implemented by the governments in both countries that helped to form the attitudes of the majority citizens towards the integration of an ethnic minority group. The paper shows that although, both discriminatory in their efforts to tackle the minority rights, Slovakia and the USA applied much varying discriminatory measures which, as a consequence, led to contrary outcomes in terms of the economic and social statuses of both ethnic minorities.

Book excerpt: A broad network of bilateral treaties for the protection of national minorities has been set up during the past fifteen years. They complement and further develop the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and other multilateral instruments. Some texts are genuine international treaties, while others are non-binding political documents. The present book brings all these texts together in a reliable English translation, which offers practitioners and researchers easy access to and supplies knowledge on the present state of development of the conventional and customary sources of law in this field. The introductory study helps further understanding of the legal character of the texts and explains how to work with these often complex and interrelated sources of law.

Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War has ushered a restructuring of the institutions of the European Community, culminating into its enlargement to Eastern Europe, under the aegis of economic integration, democracy and human rights. This book examines the development and the role of human rights in the European Union, from its inception as an economic co-operation project to an organisation of European States with a political agenda that goes beyond its borders. It argues that human rights have become an important component of the foreign policy of the European Union and that this role has grown from the inception of the Union through the Cold War and thereafter onto the process of enlargement of the Union. The book goes on to analyse the EU’s policy on minorities, as a particular example of human rights. It considers the level of their protection within the EU and the framework of international law, and compares minority rights in the older Member States including France, Germany and the UK, with newer Eastern European states.

Book excerpt: Notwithstanding the advantages of physical power, the struggle for survival among societies is not merely a matter of serial armed clashes but of the nation's spiritual resources that in the end always decide upon the victory. In Europe, there indeed exist independent countries, insignificant from the point of view of the entire civilization, and born by sheer coincidence, yet, this coincidence, this fancy, or diplomatic ploy that created them can just as easily bring them to an end---the nations that count in the political calculations are only the enlightened ones. Therefore, our nation should not merely grow in power, strengthen its character, and foster in people the feeling of love for homeland, but also---inasmuch as it is possible---breath the fresh breeze of humanity's general progress, feed it to the nation, absorb its creative energy. Until now, we have trusted and lived only in the weary conditions, conditions devoid of health-giving elements---now, as a result the nation's heart beats too slowly and its mind works too tediously. We ought to open our windows to Europe, to the wind of continental change and allow it to air our sultry home, since as not all health comes from the inside, not all disease comes from the outside.
