Book Synopsis Consumidores y ciudadanos by : Néstor García Canclini
Download or read book Consumidores y ciudadanos written by Néstor García Canclini and published by DEBOLSILLO. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Cultura de consumo y posmodernismo by : Mike Featherstone
Download or read book Cultura de consumo y posmodernismo written by Mike Featherstone and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Consumer Culture Reborn by : Martyn J. Lee
Download or read book Consumer Culture Reborn written by Martyn J. Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumer Culture Reborn focuses on consumption as the point at which economy and culture combine. The book draws the often polarised discourses of political economy and cultural studies closer together in a historical context as a means of understanding our social situations as we approach the end of the millenium. Taking as its central theme the ability of the capitalist mode of production to transform the material and social world which sustains it, the book focuses on some of the ways in which this transformational impulse has altered the means by which ordinary people reproduce their life and their patterns of life. Neither a history book, nor simply a book of theory, Consumer Culture Reborn fuses elements of economic, social and cultural theory in an historical perspective.

Book Synopsis Consumers and Citizens by : Néstor García Canclini
Download or read book Consumers and Citizens written by Néstor García Canclini and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Consumers and Citizens, Nestor Garcia Canclini, the best-known and most innovative cultural studies scholar in Latin America, maps the critical effects of urban sprawl and global media and commodity markets on citizens and shows that the complex results mean not only a shrinkage of certain traditional rights (particularly those of the welfare or client state), but also new openings for expanding citizenship. Garcia Canclini focuses on the diverse ways in which democratic societies recognize markets of citizen opinions, however heterogeneous and dissonant, as in the fashion and entertainment industries. He shows how identity issues, brought to the fore by the aligning of citizenship and consumption, can no longer be understood strictly within the purview of territory or nation. Defining a new space structured along the lines of markets, Garcia Canclini seeks to formulate a participatory and critical approach to consumption in which national culture, far from being extinguished, is reconstituted in transnational, cultural interactions.

Download or read book Consumer Culture written by Celia Lury and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Consumer Culture explores the nature and role of consumption in modern societies. Celia Lury's up-to-date revision of this successful classic establishes the importance of new object-based studies for consumer culture, and incorporates new chapters on branding and the rise of ethical consumption. Drawing on a wide range of studies, and using contemporary illustrations from the media and popular culture, Lury examines the emergence of consumer culture and the changing relations between the production and consumption of cultural goods. She argues that consumer culture has become increasingly stylized and now provides an important context for everyday creativity. This new edition of Consumer Culture explores the way in which the position of individuals within social groups and their position in social groups structured by class, gender, race, and age affects the nature of their participation in consumer culture. The powerful role consumption plays in our lives is revealed and consumer culture is seen to provide new ways of creating social and political identities.
Download or read book Dirt written by Ben Campkin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirt - and our rituals to eradicate it - is as much a part of our everyday lives as eating, breathing and sleeping. Yet this very fact means that we seldom stop to question what we mean by dirt. What do our attitudes to dirt and cleanliness tell us about ourselves and the societies we live in? Exploring a wide variety of settings - domestic, urban, suburban and rural - the contributors expose how our ideas about dirt are intimately bound up with issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality and the body. The result is a a rich and challenging work that extends our understanding of historical and contemporary cultural manifestations of dirt and cleanliness.
Book Synopsis Care of the World by : Elena Pulcini
Download or read book Care of the World written by Elena Pulcini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a philosophy of care in a global age. It discusses the distinguishing and opposing pathologies produced by globalization: unlimited individualism or self-obsession, manifested as (Promethean) omnipotence and (narcissistic) indifference, and endogamous communitarianism or an ‘us’-obsession that results in conflict and violence. The polarization between a lack and an excess of pathos is reflected in the distorted forms taken on by fear. The book advocates a metamorphosis of fear, which may restore in the subject an awareness of vulnerability and become the precondition for moral action. Such awareness and the recognition of the condition of contamination caused by the other’s unavoidable presence teach us to fear for rather than be afraid of. Fear for the world means care of the world, and care, understood as concern and solicitude, is a new notion of responsibility, in which the stress is shifted to a relational subject capable of responding to and taking care of the other. From a global perspective, the proposed vision of care also compels us to explore a new paradigm of justice.
Book Synopsis Capitalism's Eye by : Kevin Hetherington
Download or read book Capitalism's Eye written by Kevin Hetherington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capitalism's Eye is an extremely ambitious cultural history of how people experienced commodities in the era of industrial expansion. Writing against the dominant argument that the 'society of the spectacle' emerged fully formed in the mid-nineteenth century, Kevin Hetherington explains that the emergence of a culture of mass consumption dominated by visual experience was a much slower process, not truly ascendant until after the First World War. Looking at the department stores, home life, and the great exhibitions around the turn of the last century, Capitalism's Eye promises to transform how we understand both the cultural history of capitalism in America and Europe and the historical roots of the mediated spectacle that dominates our world today.
