Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated memoir expose reaches deep into the well of gastronomy with satirical and informative stories. From Austrian slave shop kitchens to gold and silver medals at the Culinary Olympics in Germany and the $ 5000 prize at the Pineapple Cooking Competition in Honolulu, to back stage horrors as a restaurateur, to sculpturing and cooking on stage and in global kitchens from Vienna to Stockholm, ocean liners, Rio de Janeiro, and the U.S. The yarn winds around continents but each anecdote is woven about a specific subject theme and characters with punch line dialogues, foreign phrases and patois in German, French, Portuguese and Swedish. Although all events are chronologically and geographically far apart, relevant historical backgrounds about Wienerschnitzel or truffles, for example, keep the reader curious from one episode to the next. All characters are actual life encounters and reappear on different stages in the narrative. Some romance and spicy erotic passages are interwoven around various ethnic cuisines during the author's involvement with "La Femme Fatale." The prose is compelling in an epicurean style alternating with brief travelogues but also with many practical pointers for the hobby chef. A few battle-hardened recipes relevant to the anecdote emphasize technique and taste, however it is not a cookbook in traditional format. On one current issue," sugar" afflicting millions of Americans, the author turns crusader against an undercover enemy. All illustrations are from the author's documentary collection from ornamental chocolate drawings to tallow sculptures. There are significant pictorial landscape narratives, perhaps reminiscent of Mark Twain. All stories evolvearound the writer's career as a chef, culinary lecturer, competitor and restaurant owner and artist. Often hilarious, seductive and delicious but also dramatic at times and humorous, it is the biographer's attempt to observe the stage of events with the impartial eye of a global citizen.

Book excerpt: A lushly photographed cookbook and travelogue showcasing the regional cuisines of the Alps, including 80 recipes for the elegant, rustic dishes served in the chalets and mountain huts situated among the alpine peaks of Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and France. “A passionate exploration of all things Alpine . . . this one is a must-have for every ski bum foodie.”—Vogue NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW From the wintry peaks of Chamonix and the picturesque trails of Gstaad to the remote villages of the Gastein Valley, the alpine regions of Europe are all-season wonderlands that offer outdoor adventure alongside hearty cuisine and intriguing characters. In Alpine Cooking, food writer Meredith Erickson travels through the region--by car, on foot, and via funicular--collecting the recipes and stories of the legendary stubes, chalets, and refugios. On the menu is an eclectic mix of mountain dishes: radicchio and speck dumplings, fondue brioche, the best schnitzel recipe, Bombardinos, warming soups, wine cave fonduta, a Chartreuse soufflé, and a host of decadent strudels and confections (Salzburger Nockerl, anyone?) served with a bottle of Riesling plucked from the snow bank beside your dining table. Organized by country and including logistical tips, detailed maps, the alpine address book, and narrative interludes discussing alpine art and wine, the Tour de France, high-altitude railways, grand European hotels, and other essential topics, this gorgeous and spectacularly photographed cookbook is a romantic ode to life in the mountains for food lovers, travelers, skiers, hikers, and anyone who feels the pull of the peaks. Praise for Alpine Cooking “This generous cookbook and travelogue will have readers booking trips to the Alps of Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland. . . . Erickson beautifully captures Alpine food and culture in this standout volume.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Experience Necessary is Chef Norman Van Aken’s joyride of a memoir. In it he spans twenty-plus years and nearly as many jobs—including the fateful job advertisement in the local paper for a short-order cook with “no experience necessary.” Long considered a culinary renegade and a pioneering chef, Van Aken is an American original who chopped and charred, sweated and seared his way to cooking stardom with no formal training, but with extra helpings of energy, creativity, and faith. After landing on the deceptively breezy shores of Key West, Van Aken faced hurricanes, economic downturns, and mercurial moneymen during the decades when a restaurant could open and close faster than you can type haute cuisine. From a graveyard shift grunt at an all-night barbeque joint to a James Beard–award finalist for best restaurant in America, Van Aken put his trusting heart, poetic soul, natural talent, and ever-expanding experience into every venture—and helped transform the American culinary landscape along the way. In the irreverent tradition of Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential, and populated by a rogues’ gallery of colorful characters—including movie stars, legendary musicians, and culinary giants Julia Child, Emeril Lagasse, and Charlie Trotter—No Experience Necessary offers a uniquely personal, highly-entertaining under-the-tablecloth view of the high-stakes world of American cuisine told with wit, insight, and great affection by a natural storyteller.
