Book excerpt: FROM POPULAR MENAGE A TROIS AUTHOR LILY HARLEM How do you pass the time handcuffed to somebody who gets on your nerves? All journalist Roxie Diamond wants is the chance to ride out with the London night patrol. Reporting on women who sell their bodies to survive is her latest assignment and she's on the case. Trouble is, the two hot cops she's partnered with couldn't be more different, Officer Rudy is displeased to have a tag-along, but he can brood all he likes while she admires his partner's cute ass and broad shoulders. Roxie doesn't count on being mistaken for an accessory in human trafficking. Before she knows it she's snatched, interrogated, and her world is turned upside down. Just as well her sullen cop takes her safety seriously. Though how much help he'll be when she finds herself handcuffed to him in an abandoned warehouse, locked up for goodness knows how long, she doesn't know. Will he open up? Protect her? Will the anger in his eyes turn to desire when she confesses her lust? Will he admit to the passion she can feel brimming beneath his surface? And can they really do that, while in such a dangerous predicament? And just how close is he to his partner?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current crisis in policing can be traced to failures of reform. “Sparrow surely is right to condemn policing directed only at crime rates rather than community satisfaction.” –The New York Times Book Review In the past two years, America has witnessed incendiary milestones in the poor relations between police and the African-American community: Ferguson, Baltimore, and more recently Baton Rouge, St. Paul, and Dallas. Malcolm Sparrow, who teaches at Harvard Kennedy School of Government and is a former British police detective, argues that other factors in the development of police theory and practice over the last twenty-five years have also played a major role in contributing to these tragedies and to a great many other cases involving excessive police force and community alienation. Sparrow shows how the core ideas of community and problem-solving policing have failed to thrive. In many police departments these foundational ideas have been reduced to mere rhetoric. The result is heavy reliance on narrow quantitative metrics, where police define how well they are doing by tallying up traffic stops, or arrests made for petty crimes. Sparrow's analysis shows what it will take for police departments to escape their narrow focus and perverse metrics and turn back to making public safety and public cooperation their primary goals. Police, according to Sparrow, are in the risk-control business and need to grasp the fundamental nature of that challenge and develop a much more sophisticated understanding of its implications for mission, methods, measurement, partnerships, and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You know, to me, a violin and a person are alike. We keep inside the reverberations of the most important people who touch us. And the music we make lives after us.” Imagine you are holding a violin made in 1750. Not a prestigious Amati or Stradivarius but a special one-off commission by a workaday luthier called John Johnson in his small workshop in Cheapside, London. You think about its history of more than a quarter of a millennium. Who made it and why? Who has owned it? Played it? What celebrated characters might have heard it? How was it passed down, hand to hand, and how did its owners’ lives interlink? Holding it you might even muse on the transience of life against the durability of the instrument and the music it has played. This is the story of that violin. It is taken on an incredible journey through history and is passed to a variety of characters including a Georgian libertine, a young French female virtuoso, a philanthropic collector, an illiterate labourer, a heroic WW1 flyer and a young German girl who survives the Holocaust. After a series of coincidences the story of the violin comes full circle in a touching and unexpected denouement. The Violin is the perfect read for fans of historical fiction, or music lovers. It will transport you through time, pull on your heart strings and leave you spellbound.

Book excerpt: This is book 3 and the finale of the The Misery MC romance series! Once she’s mine, I’m never letting go. She’s too innocent to keep… And too perfect to abandon. For better or worse, Eden belongs to me now… ‘Til death do us part. MADDOX Women are easy. You push the right button and they’re putty in your hands. Except for Eden. One taste of her and I was hooked. I’d never wanted to control someone so badly in my life, and she was all too willing to keep me satisfied. Even though I’m the last thing she should want. I’m haunted by my past and its dangers are threatening to snuff us both out. But women like her always run towards the flames. It’s up to me to keep her safe. Here on my streets, violence makes right, and anyone who tries to harm her will learn from me the hard way. Then, I’ll take her away from it all and put her where she belongs: In my grasp forever. EDEN Maddox is the hottest man I’ve ever seen, scars and all. Any woman would kill to be his. But no amount of muscles, tattoos, and money can change what he is inside: A killer. Beneath the beautiful façade is an outlaw bad boy. Every snarling command, every teasing stroke of his finger is just another bullet in his arsenal. He’s breaking me, one word at a time. Until I’m begging. Until my voice is just a whimper. Until I’m utterly ruined and completely at his mercy. I wish I could say I didn’t love it. Crave it. Wish for it night and day. But the truth is, I almost can’t remember what I was before. All that matters now is that I’m HIS.
