Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our schools are troubled with a multiplication of studies, each in turn having its own multiplication of materials and principles. Our teachers find their tasks made heavier in that they have come to deal with pupils individually and not merely in mass. Unless these steps in advance are to end in distraction, some clew of unity, some principle that makes for simplification, must be found. This book represents the conviction that the needed steadying and centralizing factor is found in adopting as the end of endeavor that attitude of mind, that habit of thought, which we call scientific. This scientific attitude of mind might, conceivably, be quite irrelevant to teaching children and youth. But this book also represents the conviction that such is not the case; that the native and unspoiled attitude of childhood, marked by ardent curiosity, fertile imagination, and love of experimental inquiry, is near, very near, to the attitude of the scientific mind. If these pages assist any to appreciate this kinship and to consider seriously how its recognition in educational practice would make for individual happiness and the reduction of social waste, the book will amply have served its purpose. It is hardly necessary to enumerate the authors to whom I am indebted. My fundamental indebtedness is to my wife, by whom the ideas of this book were inspired, and through whose work in connection with the Laboratory School, existing in Chicago between 1896 and 1903, the ideas attained such concreteness as comes from embodiment and testing in practice. It is a pleasure, also, to acknowledge indebtedness to the intelligence and sympathy of those who coöperated as teachers and supervisors in the conduct of that school, and especially to Mrs. Ella Flagg Young, then a colleague in the University, and now Superintendent of the Schools of Chicago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been a perceptible increase in per capita income and expenditure and possibly some decline in the incidence of poverty in India, what till remains is massive and will not be remedied quickly. Even with radical policies, to effect a large change in the shifts in income and occupational structures will take more than the rest of this century. In the welter of recent exchanges between the government and the oppostiion as well as between planners and market advocates on the strategy of growth, these issues have been largely obfuscated. This selection of articles from Economic and Political Weekly on different aspects of poverty, unemployment and income distribution will stimulate fresh discusssion of the many methodological and policy questions that remain unresolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a comprehensive international forum on defect-related phenomena in wide-gap materials, crystalline or otherwise. Materials as diverse as SiO2, group-III nitride compounds, diamond, alkali halides, refractory oxides, and polymers are covered, and the "defects" considered include intrinsic point imperfections, dislocations, accidental impurities, intentional dopants, imperfect surfaces, nanocrystals in host matrices, and bonding defects in glasses. Important unifying similarities of the phenomena are identified and investigative methods are presented which can be applied, almost across-the-board, to materials which share a wide transparency, deep traps, extensive stored energy in electron-hole pairs, and a low conduction-electron density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Contract Laws of Asia provides an authoritative account of the contract law regimes of selected Asian jurisdictions, including the major centres of commerce where until now, limited critical commentaries have been available in the English language. In this new six part series of scholarly essays from leading scholars and commentators, each volume will offer an insider's perspective into specific areas of contract law, including: remedies, formation, parties, contents, vitiating factors, change of circumstances, illegality, and public policy, and will explore how these diverse jurisdictions address common problems encountered in contractual disputes. Concluding each volume will be a closing discussion of the convergences and divergences across the jurisdictions. Volume I of this series examines the remedies for breach of contract in the laws of China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, and Thailand. Specifically, it addresses the readiness of each legal system in their action to insist that parties perform their obligations; the methods of enforcing the parties' agreed remedies for breach; and the ways in which monetary compensation are awarded. Each jurisdiction is discussed over two chapters; the first chapter will examine the performance remedies and agreed remedies, while the second explores the monetary remedies. A concluding chapter offers a comparative overview.

Book excerpt: "eHealth" is the use of information and communication technologies to support health and healthcare. It is also a school of thought about connectivity, social participation, and networked innovation. Policy makers, health care professionals, patients, insurers, researchers, and citizens alike, believe that eHealth will contribute to the solution of today's health issues and to the innovation of health care systems. In this book, health specialists - from the Center for eHealth Research and Disease Management at the University of Twente, along with the Dutch government's National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) - explain what needs to be done to increase the impact and uptake of eHealth interventions. They do so by examining a range of hot topics, such as human-centered design, business modeling, persuasive technology, and the current trends at the intersection of health, social science, and technology. These topics converge in a holistic approach to the development and design of successful eHealth technologies.
