Book excerpt: This proceedings volume comprises the invited plenary lectures, contributed and poster papers presented at a symposium organised to mark the successful inauguration of the world's first commercial plant for production of gasoline from natural gas, based on the Mobil methanol-to-gasoline process. The objectives of the Symposium were to present both fundamental research and engineering aspects of the development and commercialization of gas-to-gasoline processes. These include steam reforming, methanol synthesis and methanol-to-gasoline. Possible alternative processes e.g. MOGD, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons, and the direct conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons were also considered. The papers in this volume provide a valuable and extremely wide-ranging overview of current research into the various options for natural gas conversion, giving a detailed description of the gas-to-gasoline process and plant. Together, they represent a unique combination of fundamental surface chemistry catalyst characterization, reaction chemistry and engineering scale-up and commercialization.

Book excerpt: With the signing of the Paris Agreement in December 2015 the United Nations explained their willingness to limit the GHG Emissions and contribute to the measures against the global warming effect. In 2019 the European Commission proposed the Green Deal and as a consequence the target to be climate neutral in 2050. In consequence the fossil based energy system has to transform into a climate-neutral energy system with renewable and sustainable energy carriers. Research on and development of alternative fuels and new production processes are ongoing to provide the technical solution. Political actions are needed to provide the economic framework for the introduction of such alternative fuel solutions. The fulfilment of the European CO2 reduction targets until 2050 needs realistic technical solutions including backwards compatible approaches for existing vehicle fleets. An economic and sustainable development towards climate neutral mobility requires a holistic view based on life cycle assessments for the different mobility approaches including the economic impacts as well as financing options. A synergetic discussion of solutions for future fuels and powertrain technologies is needed to develop an economic pathway to a sustainable and affordable mobility of tomorrow. The challenging goal for mobility can only be achieved through an international cooperation of universities, the automobile industry, energy producers, the oil industry and the legislative bodies of the member states. The international colloquium aims to contribute to the development of a climate-neutral mobility by exchanging views on and discussing all aspects connected with the "powertrain/fuel/environment" system, including the necessary political regulations.

Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to provide scientists with a comprehensive summary of new research areas in the activation of carbon monoxide, as one of the most reactive molecules, and in its applications. In order to understand the variety of the reactivity of CO, a quantum-chemical approach helps the reader to understand the binding state of CO to the solid surface (Chapter 1). The structure of the adsorbed CO can be better understood by examining its reactivity towards single crystals in the absence and in the presence of promoters (Chapter 2). The first approach in the reactivity study is that of studying catalytic activity of single crystals and structure sensitivity which are summarized in Chapter 3. One of the most prominent effects in the CO activation process is ascribed to the presence of additives, promoters which, in a real catalyst system, are far more complicated than on single crystal surfaces (Chapter 4). The original Fischer-Tropsch process applied fused iron or cobalt catalysts which were suitable for producing mainly straight chain hydrocarbons. The two most important processes involving CO activation, the new FT process and alcohol formation are discussed in Chapters 5 and 7. An important type of catalyst, the bimetallic catalysts, is discussed in Chapter 6. The role of hydrogen as one of the most frequently used partners in CO activation is discussed in Chapter 8. The field of production of specialty chemicals is an excellent example of the homogeneous catalytic activation of CO (Chapter 9). In Chapter 10 an overview is given of the industrial applications of CO chemistry and these are illustrated by working processes. The final chapter gives the reader some hints about future progress in the field.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop a better understanding of the mechanism of alcohol synthesis from CO/H2 by adding probe molecules (principlely, CH3NO2) to the dynamic reaction mixture and following how the added probe molecule is incorporated into the products to distinguish the dominant pathways from the possibilities proposed in the literature. Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 and Co/Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst systems have been chosen for this study. It is well known that Cu/ZnO methanol synthesis catalysts can be made into higher alcohol synthesis catalysts by adding alkali metal (Cs, K, Na). The inclusion off Group VIII metals (Co, Fe) for the same purpose has been studied to a much lesser extent. Few mechanistic studies of the Co/Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 have been reported in the literature. Study of a catalyst system consisting of both Group VIII metal and well-known methanol synthesis catalysts may bridge the knowledge of supported metals and traditional alcohol synthesis catalysts.

Book excerpt: Modification of the Cu/ZnO = 30/70 mol% methanol synthesis catalyst by incorporation of Mn, Fe, Co, Rh, and Pd by aqueous coprecipitation from nitrate solutions or by impregnation of the binary catalyst with metal carbonyls from organic media resulted in a lowering of the carbon conversion of synthesis gas to products. Of the coprecipitated ternary catalysts, the Fe/Cu/ZnO samples exhibited the largest change in selectivities, which was toward the formation of higher alcohols and hydrocarbons. It was demonstrated that the alcohols are formed as primary products and are produced at high rates over a Fe/Cu/ZnO catalyst containing1 mol% iron than over Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. The catalysts that were prepared by impregnation of metal carbonyls onto the surface of reduced Cu/ZnO catalysts exhibited very low catalytic activities. However, it was shown that the activities of the Rh catalysts were increased by the utilization of elevated pressures. The effects of CO2 and H2O in the H2/CO synthesis gas on the methanol yield over the binary Cu/ZnO catalyst were investigated. A pronounced maximum in % carbon conversion to methanol was observed at low concentrations of both additives, and at higher concentrations the methanol synthesis activity was severely inhibited. A comparison of the two experiments clearly demonstrates that water behaved as a more effective promoter at low concentrations and a more severe retardant at high concentrations that did carbon dioxide under the same experimental conditions. This indicates that H2O is directly influencing the methanol synthesis reaction rather than the CO2 formed from it by the water gas shift reaction.
