Book Synopsis Rhetorics in the New Millennium by : James D. Hester
Download or read book Rhetorics in the New Millennium written by James D. Hester and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most renowned modern practitioners of New Testament rhetorical criticism, including Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Wilhelm Wuellner and the editors themselves provide new rhetorical readings of New Testament texts. Organized into three distinct sections, Rhetorics in the New Millennium provides a cutting-edge approach to this thorny issue in biblical studies. The first section is a collection of three essays that are primarily theoretical in nature and concerned with examining general theories of rhetoric. The second section is a series of specific studies each using a different accepted theoretical model to analyze a given text. The final section presents valuable appendices which summarize information about the content of certain theoretical models of criticism. Finally, a bibliography listing a wide variety of rhetorical critical studies and reference works is included.

Book Synopsis Explorations in Rhetorical Criticism by : Charles J. Stewart
Download or read book Explorations in Rhetorical Criticism written by Charles J. Stewart and published by University Park : Pennsylvania State University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first volume of original essays on rhetorical criticism to appear in many years, the authors stress active engagement in the critical process. Bearing in mind the complaint frequently leveled at rhetorical criticism--that method as method has taken precedence over understanding and appreciation--the editors encouraged innovation, and the contributors responded by moving beyond the merely theoretical to explore implications through implied criticism, participating in the activity rather than merely talking about it. Consequently, these essays avoid further lamentation over the current state of the art and concentrate instead on constructive presentations. Not only do the essays add significantly to knowledge about rhetorical criticism, but they also serve liberal education by helping to bring understanding, discrimination, and appreciation to the entire process of human communication.
Download or read book Error Analysis written by Bernd Spillner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errors are information. In contrastive linguistics, they are thought to be caused by unconscious transfer of mother tongue structures to the system of the target language and give information about both systems. In the interlanguage hypothesis of second language acquisition, errors are indicative of the different intermediate learning levels and are useful pedagogical feedback. In both cases error analysis is an essential methodological tool for diagnosis and evaluation of the language acquisition process. Errors, too, give information in psychoanalysis (e.g., the Freudian slip), in language universal research, and in other fields of linguistics, such as linguistic change. This bibliography is intended to stimulate study into cross-language, cross-discipline and cross-theoretical, as well as for language universal, use of the numerous, but sometimes hard to come by, error analysis studies. 5398 titles covering the period 1578 up to 1990 (with work in more than 144 languages and language families) are cited, cross-referenced, and described. The subject areas covered are numerous. For example: Theoretical Linguistics (Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics), Historical Linguistics (Language Change), Applied Linguistics (e.g. Speech Disorders), Translation, Mother Tongue Acquisition, Foreign Language Learning (Negative Transfer, Intralingual and Interlingual Errors), Psychoanalysis (Slips of the Tongue), Typography, Shorthand, Clinical Linguistics and Speech Pathology, Reading Research, Automatic Error Detection, Contact Linguistics (Code-switching, Interference), etc.

Download or read book Vain Rhetoric written by Gary D. Salyer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Ecclesiastes, like many ancient and modern first-person discourses, generates ambivalent responses in its readers. The book's rhetorical strategy produces both acceptance of, and suspicion towards, the major positions argued by the author. 'Vain rhetoric' aptly describes the persuasive and dissuasive properties of the narrator's peculiar characterization. It also describes how the Book of Ecclesiates, with its abundant use of rhetorical questions, constant gapping techniques, and other strategies from the arsenal of ambiguity, is a stunning testimony to the power of the various strategies of indirection to communicate to the reader something of his or her own rhetorical liabilities and limitations, as well as those of the religious community in general.
