Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. I. MATKOVICH During the meeting of the International Symposium on Boron held in October, 1972 in Tbilisi, U.S.S.R., the idea was proposed to assemble a review of boron and refractory borides by the specialists present. The advantages of such a work were immediately apparent. Such diverse applications of borides as in protective armor, nuclear reactors, coat ings, reinforcement, etc. can hardly all be presented in sufficient detail by a single author. On the other hand it was also recognized that with so much specialization, some areas of interest may not be covered. Within the last decade or two a number of areas have been developed in which the use of refractory borides is growing and improvements are being actively explored. Thus, a number of borides have considerable potential as reinforcing material for plastics or light metals, though only boron fibers have been firmly established up to the present. Ap plication of flakes and films for two-dimensional reinforcement appears attractive, although the high cost of materials and development repre sents a considerable barrier. A number of borides have been used to manufacture lightweight protec tive armor. In this area relatively fast changes seem to be taking place as improvements in performance and weight are made. Boron carbide has found considerable use in this application and new developments exploit the light weight of beryllium borides.

Book Synopsis Crystal Growth of Alpha-rhombohedral Boron by : Wei Gao
Download or read book Crystal Growth of Alpha-rhombohedral Boron written by Wei Gao and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure boron exists in two main polymorphs, the common [Beta]-rhombohedral boron and the relatively rare [Alpha]-rhombohedral boron. [Alpha]-rhombohedral boron ([Alpha]-B) possesses several extraordinary properties: self-healing from radiation damage and a high hole mobility. In addition, the [superscript]10B isotope has a large thermal neutron capture cross section. Such properties make it an excellent candidate for novel electronic device, such as direct energy conversion devices (alphacells and betacells) and neutron detectors. However, research on the properties and applications of [Alpha]-B has been limited due to the difficulty to produce high quality [Alpha]-B crystals of significant size. The preparation of [Alpha]-rhombohedral boron is challenging for several reasons: first, [Alpha]-rhombohedral boron has a low thermodynamic stability; it is only stable below 1100°C, at higher temperature [Beta]-rhombohedral boron is the stable polymorph. In addition, at elevated temperatures, boron is highly reactive, which make it is difficult to produce pure boron crystals. The primary goal of this research was to produce high quality [Alpha]-B crystals of significant size. The main focus of this study was to explore the feasibility of producing [Alpha]-B from a copper flux. Copper is a promising solvent for [Alpha]-B crystal growth: the eutectic temperature of copper-boron is low, 996°C, and the phase diagram of copper-boron is relatively simple, and there are not many intermediate boride-copper compounds. In addition, copper is easily removed from crystals by etching with concentrated nitric acid. Last but not least, copper is less expensive than other metal solvents such as platinum. Boron crystal growth from a platinum solvent and vapor-liquid-solid growth by chemical vapor deposition were also performed for comparison. A series of crystals were grown over a range of initial boron concentrations (9.9 to 27.7 mole %) and cooling rates. Small irregular-shaped black crystals (>100[Mu]m) and well-faceted red crystals in various shapes, as large as 500 microns were produced. The crystals were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The correlation between experiment results and experimental parameters (source materials, the purity of growth atmosphere, and crucible materials, etc.) are reported. Suggestions about further investigation for [Alpha]-B crystal growth are proposed.

Book excerpt: Gravimetric Analysis, Part III describes the experimental procedures for the gravimetric analysis of various compounds. This book is composed of 13 chapters that also present sample preparation protocols. The first four chapters survey the steps for halogen compound determination. The succeeding chapters provide the procedures for gravimetric determination of cyanide, thiocyanate ions, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, silicon, and boron. The final chapter considers other aspects of gravimetric experiments, including apparatus cleaning, reagents, and numerical calculation of the result. This book will prove useful to analytical and inorganic chemists, teachers, and students in the allied fields.

Book Synopsis Boron Rich Solids by : Nina Orlovskaya
Download or read book Boron Rich Solids written by Nina Orlovskaya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to discuss the current status of research and development of boron-rich solids as sensors, ultra-high temperature ceramics, thermoelectrics, and armor. Novel biological and chemical sensors made of stiff and light-weight boron-rich solids are very exciting and efficient for applications in medical diagnoses, environmental surveillance and the detection of pathogen and biological/chemical terrorism agents. Ultra-high temperature ceramic composites exhibit excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance for hypersonic vehicle applications. Boron-rich solids are also promising candidates for high-temperature thermoelectric conversion. Armor is another very important application of boron-rich solids, since most of them exhibit very high hardness, which makes them perfect candidates with high resistance to ballistic impact. The following topical areas are presented: •Boron-rich solids: science and technology •Synthesis and sintering strategies of boron rich solids •Microcantilever sensors •Screening of the possible boron-based thermoelectric conversion materials; •Ultra-high temperature ZrB2 and HfB2 based composites •Magnetic, transport and high-pressure properties of boron-rich solids •Restrictions of the sensor dimensions for chemical detection •Armor
