Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear optical studies of periodic dielectric structures have blossomed in the past two decades. New fabrication techniques are producing fiber grating and multidimensional photonic crystals in materials where the refractive index can be varied by light pulses and beams. Gap solitons that can propagate at any velocity from zero to the speed of light and spatial solitons that prevent the diffractive spread of light in waveguide arrays are two examples of the new phenomena described in this book. Many new materials and structures are being developed that will impact new optical devices with applications in optical communications and optical data processing. All the above topics are addressed in detail in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years ago when we had finished our work on the first edition of our Handbook we didn't even suppose that three years later it would become necessary to greatly revise and update the material. It happened because of the following developments. 1. The invention and tremendous development of modern nonlinear optical crystals such as BBO, LBO, KTP, ZnGeP , etc. 2 2. Rapid progress in laser techniques (femtosecond CPM laser, Ti: sapphire laser, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, etc.). 3. The appearence of numerous organic crystals which can be synthesized with predictable properties. 4. Progress in the theory of nonlinear frequency conversion utilizing biaxial crystals, femtosecond pulses, etc. 5. Accumulation of new data on the properties of nonlinear optical crystals. In accordance with the above, we have made many changes in the text. The first chapter was revised by D.N. Nikogosyan, the second one by V.G. Dmitriev and D.N. Nikogosyan, and the fourth one by G.G. Gurzadyan. The third chapter, containing the main reference material on 77 nonlinear optical crystals was completely rewritten and updated by D.N. Nikogosyan. The Appendix containing the list of most commonly used laser wavelengths was compiled by D.N. Nikogosyan. We would appreciate any valuable comments and recommendations that will allow us to further improve the Handbook. We would like to thank H.K.V. Lotsch for fruitful and long-lasting cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been a phenomenal growth in the field of photonic crystal research and has emerged as an interdisciplinary area. Photonic crystals are usually nanostructured electromagnetic media consisting of periodic variation of dielectric constant, which prohibit certain electromagnetic wave frequency ranges called photonic bandgaps to propagate through them. Photonic crystals elicited numerous interesting features by unprecedented control of light and their exploitation is a promising tool in nanophotonics and designing optical components. The book ‘Advances in Photonic Crystals and Devices’ is designed with 15 chapters with introductory as well as research and application based contents. It covers the following highlighted features: Basics of photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers Different theoretical as well as experimental approaches Current research advances from around the globe Nonlinear optics and super-continuum generation in photonic crystal fibers Magnetized cold plasma photonic crystals Liquid crystal defect embedded with graphene layers Biophysics and biomedical applications as optical sensors Two-dimensional photonic crystal demultiplexer Optical logic gates using photonic crystals A large number of references The goal of this book is to draw the background in understanding, fabrication and characterization of photonic crystals using a variety of materials and their applications in design of several optical devices. Though the book is useful as a reference for the researchers working in the area of photonics, optical computing and fabrication of nanophotonic devices, it is intended for the beginners like students pursuing their masters’ degree in photonics.

Book excerpt: : This book is based on research conducted on the growth and characterization of nonlinear optical crystals. Due to the significance of crystals in contemporary technology, crystal growth has been the focus of extensive research in both solid-state physics and materials science. This book serves as an introduction to the growth phenomena, specifics of growth processes, nonlinear optical phenomena, and characterization methods that are being used for the analysis. The book is divided into three chapters: The first chapter focuses on the experimental techniques of crystal growth. It outlines the several ways that crystals grow based on the phases they go through, such as solid-solid phase transition, liquid-solid phase transformation, and vapour-solid phase transformation. The optimization methods for growing high-quality single crystals are thoroughly presented. The benefits and drawbacks of methods of growth are reviewed. The second chapter explains the theory of nonlinear optical phenomena. The selection criteria for nonlinear optical materials are reviewed. The history of nonlinear optics and the various types of nonlinear optical materials are discussed. The role of amino acids in the formation of nonlinear optical crystals is well explained. The third chapter discusses characterization procedures that are essential in determining the quality of crystals. The several characterization mechanisms including the molecular structure, chemical composition, surface morphology, optical properties, dielectric properties, mechanical behavior, and thermal properties necessary for crystal analysis are described. We hope that this book will be valuable to researchers and students.
