This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the potential for military working dogs to support Special Operations Forces (SOF). Modern technology has not eliminated the operational prospective for the military employment of dogs. Canine olfactory superiority, advanced hearing, and ability to detect movement offer significant military employment potential. Military working dogs can be trained for scouting, patrolling, building and ship searches, countermine, counterdrug and tracking. When used properly, dogs are an inexpensive and efficient force multiplier. Qualitative research using correlational data comprises the monograph's methodology. Military working dog capabilities, limitations, and historical employment will be discussed and then compared to Special Operation Forces principal missions and collateral activities. The conclusion demonstrates that dogs have a wider role to perform in today's operational environment and that military working dogs can augment and complement SOF operations. Nearly every SOF mission can benefit from the inclusion of dogs- particularly in support of Stability and Support Operations conducted in developing countries that cannot employ or sustain complex and technologically sophisticated equipment. Military working dogs are a proven, low technology, combat and combat support capability and may have a future role in support of Special Operations Forces.

Book excerpt: An incredible story of the largely unseen but vital role that dogs play in our armed forces, Lisa Rogak's The Dogs of War is a must-read for animal lovers everywhere. Military working dogs gained widespread attention after Cairo participated in the SEAL Team 6 mission that led to Osama bin Laden's death. Before that, few civilians realized that dogs served in combat, let alone that they could parachute from thirty thousand feet up. The Dogs of War reveals the amazing range of jobs that our four-legged soldiers now perform, examines the dogs' training and equipment, and sets the record straight on those rumors of titanium teeth. You'll find heartwarming stories of the deep bond that dogs and their handlers share with each other, and learn how soldiers and civilians can help the cause by fostering puppies or adopting retirees.

Book excerpt: In this special edition of War Dogs, adapted specifically for a younger audience, Rebecca Frankel offers a riveting mix of on-the-ground reporting her own hands-on experiences in the military working dog world, and a look at the science of dogs’ special abilities—from their amazing noses and powerful jaws to their enormous sensitivity to the emotions of their human companions. Her narrative gives us insight into the world of dogs in combat and the touching aspect of the relationship between soldiers and their dogs. Frankel explores the long, rich history of dogs in the US military, from the spirit-lifting mascots of the Civil War to the dogs still leading patrols hunting for IEDs today. Frankel not only interviewed handlers who deployed with dogs in wars from Vietnam to Iraq, but top military commanders, K-9 program managers, combat-trained therapists who brought dogs into war zones as part of a preemptive measure to stave off PTSD, and veterinary technicians stationed in Bagram. She makes a passionate case for maintaining a robust war-dog force. In this YA edition, Rebecca Frankel gives further insight into her work as a journalist and how it led her to explore the world of dogs and their handlers. With a compelling cast of humans and animals, this moving book is a must read for all dog lovers.

At one time during WWII, there were nearly 15,000 trained military working dogs in the U.S. inventory serving a broad range of duties from patrolling to delivering messages. Today the U.S. military maintains fewer than 1,400 dogs.1 Although historic declines in dog utilization are apparent, today's operational environment clearly begs for an enhanced military working dog capability-particularly with U.S. Special Operations forces. Technology preempted the decline of military working dog usage. During the Cold War, the Warsaw Pact's numerical equipment superiority encouraged the development of equipment and doctrine designed to intercept and kill the enemy in depth in a high intensity conflict. Accordingly, the U.S. military focused on sophisticated technological solutions. The dog as a low-technology system saw little development during this period. As a result, military working dogs had limited use in an era of bipolar superpowers and nuclear brinkmanship

Book excerpt: Growing out of the most-read piece in the history of Foreign Policy, receiving 11.2 million page views, War Dogs is even more vivid and comprehensive than the New York Times bestseller, Soldier Dogs. This riveting exploration of dogs in the military takes you behind the scenes and onto the front lines with the U. S. military’s canine units. For more than 100 years, dogs have fought alongside U.S. soldiers on and off the battlefield, accompanying troops on all their missions from parachute deployment to bomb clearance. In War Dogs, journalist Rebecca Frankel delves into the remarkable realm of these specially trained canines, drawing on her own extensive, on-the-ground reporting to provide a full understanding of what dogs and their human compatriots go through day after day under fire—and the striking bond that evolves between them. Frankel explores this full-circle relationship even as it extends beyond war with therapy dogs—canines healing the wounds of combat, both physical and psychological. From the Civil War to the War on Terror, dogs’ role in military missions has remained one of the most intriguing—and most effective—weapons in the arsenal of modern warfare. And while the United States is winding down its involvement in two wars and military funds dwindle, Frankel makes a passionate case for keeping war dog programs as a permanent and well-funded military force. Full of stories of heartrending heroics and photographs throughout, War Dogs is informative, emotional, and astounding. Read it along with your best four-legged friend.

Book excerpt: Over 3,200 total slides and pages … INTRODUCTION: Dogs have served in active service at the sides of their handlers for decades. They have been heroes, showing bravery under fire, saving lives (often losing their own), and bringing comfort to the injured and infirmed. The first recorded American use of military dogs was during the Seminole War of 1835 and again in 1842. In Florida and Louisiana, the Army used Cuban bred bloodhounds for tracking. During the US Civil War, dogs were used as messengers, guards, and unit mascots. The Army Quartermaster Corps began the US Armed Forces' first war dog training during World War II. By 1945, they had trained almost 10,000 war dogs for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Fifteen war dog platoons served overseas in World War II. Seven platoons saw service in Europe and eight in the Pacific. MWDs were trained at Fort Carson, Colorado, organized into scout dog platoons, and used in the Korean conflict for sentry duty and support of combat patrols. In 1957, MWD training moved to Lackland Air Force base (LAFB), Texas, with the Air Force managing the program. Throughout the Vietnam Conflict, the Military Police Corps used dogs with considerable success. Most of these were sentry dogs used to safeguard critical installations such as ports and airfields. A new dimension in canine utilization was realized when marijuana detector dog teams were trained and deployed to assist military police in suppressing illicit drug traffic. Sentry and marijuana detector dog teams were then deployed worldwide in support of military police. An important outgrowth of the conflict was the development of canine research and development efforts. These ongoing efforts were able to initiate the first steps toward developing a more intelligent and stronger military dog, training dogs to detect specific drugs and explosives, developing multiple-purpose dogs, and employing tactical dogs by electronic remote control. In the 1990s and early 2000s, MWDs were deployed around the globe in military operations such as Just Cause, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Uphold Democracy, and Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. These teams were effectively utilized to enhance the security of critical facilities and areas, as well as bolster force protection and antiterrorism missions, allowing commanders to use military police CONTENTS: Military Working Dog Handler Medical Presentations (1,248 slides) Military Working Dog Handler Additional Medical & Dental Presentations (346 slides) Handler Training Medical Tasks Manual (50 pages) Design Guide for Military Working Dog Facilities (31 pages) VETERINARY / FOODBORNE ILLNESS SPECIMEN SAMPLE TEST AND SUBMISSION GUIDE (72 pages) Military Police - Military Working Dogs (58 pages) SOLDIER'S MANUAL AND TRAINER'S GUIDE MOS 91T ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST SKILL LEVELS 1/2/3/4 (407 pages) U.S. Army MILITARY WORKING DOG MANUAL (136 pages) U.S. Air Force MILITARY WORKING DOG PROGRAM (51 pages) U.S. Navy MILITARY WORKING DOG MANUAL (206 pages) United States Department of Agriculture National Canine Operations Manual (194 pages) United States Department of Agriculture National Detector Dog Manual (274 pages)
