Book Synopsis Biblical Criticism in Early Modern Europe by : Grantley McDonald
Download or read book Biblical Criticism in Early Modern Europe written by Grantley McDonald and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval western theologians considered the Johannine comma (1 John 5:7-8) the clearest biblical evidence for the Trinity. When Erasmus failed to find the comma in the Greek manuscripts he used for his New Testament edition, he omitted it. Accused of promoting Antitrinitarian heresy, Erasmus included the comma in his third edition (1522) after seeing it in a Greek codex from England, even though he suspected the manuscript's authenticity. The resulting disputes, involving leading theologians, philologists and controversialists such as Luther, Calvin, Sozzini, Milton, Newton, Bentley, Gibbon and Porson, touched not simply on philological questions, but also on matters of doctrine, morality, social order, and toleration. While the spuriousness of the Johannine comma was established by 1900, it has again assumed iconic status in recent attempts to defend biblical inerrancy amongst the Christian Right. A social history of the Johannine comma thus provides significant insights into the recent culture wars.

Book Synopsis What Is Cultural Criticism? by : Francis Mulhern
Download or read book What Is Cultural Criticism? written by Francis Mulhern and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In What Is Cultural Criticism?, two leading critics grapple with problems of literature, politics and intellectual practice. The debate opens with Francis Mulhern's account of what he terms 'metacultural discourse'. This embraces two opposing critical traditions, the elite pessimism of Kulturkritik and the populist enthusiasms of Cultural Studies. Each in its own way dissolves politics into culture, Mulhern argues. Collini, on the other hand, protests that cultural criticism provides resources for genuine critical engagement with contemporary society. Tension between culture and politics there may be, but it works productively in both directions. This widely noticed encounter is that rare thing, a sustained debate in which, as Collini remarks, the protagonists not only exchange shots but also ideas. It concludes with Mulhern's engagement with Collini's writing on the subordination of universities to metrics and bureaucracy, and a companion rejoinder from Collini on Mulhern's study of the 'condition of culture novel' and his essays on questions of nationality and the politics of intellectuals.

Book Synopsis Principles of Akkadian Textual Criticism by : Martin Worthington
Download or read book Principles of Akkadian Textual Criticism written by Martin Worthington and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errors of many kinds abound in Akkadian writings, but this fact’s far-reaching implications have never been unraveled and systematized. To attempt this is the aim of this book. Drawing on scholarship from other fields, it outlines a framework for the critical evaluation of extant text and the formulation of conjectural emendations. Along the way, it explores issues at the interface of orthography, textual transmission, scribal education, grammar, literacy, and literary interpretation.
