Book excerpt: An ancient Sith ship hurtles into the future carrying a lethal cargo that could forever destroy Luke Skywalker’s hopes for peace. The Civil War is almost over when Jedi Knight Jaden Korr experiences a Force vision so intense he must act. Enlisting two salvage jocks and their ship, Jaden sets out into space. Someone—or something—appears to be in distress. But what Jaden and his crew find confounds them. A five-thousand-year-old dreadnaught—bringing with it a full force of Sith and one lone Jedi—has inadvertently catapulted eons from the past into the present. The ship’s weapons may not be cutting-edge, but its cargo, a special ore that makes those who use the dark side nearly invincible, is unsurpassed. The ancient Jedi on board is determined to destroy the Sith. But for Jaden, even more is at stake: for his vision has led him to uncover a potentially indestructible threat to everything the Jedi Order stands for. Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

Book excerpt: “A fascinating, thoughtful, and accessible account of the emerging field of electromedicine. A timely and eloquent warning on the hazards of electronic pollution.”—Jeremy Rifkin, author of The Hydrogen Economy At the same time that exciting insights about electromedicine’s powerful ability to use the body’s inherent healing abilities are emerging, electromagnetic fields radiating from power lines, radar, microwave ovens, VDTs, satellites, radios, and even electric blankets are putting our health at serious risk. Researchers are finding that this radiation correlates with increases in cancer, birth defects, depression, learning disabilities, chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer’s, AIDS, and sudden infant death syndrome. In this groundbreaking book, Robert O Becker explains how new and nontraditional healing techniques such as acupuncture, homeopathy, visualization, hypnosis, and electrotherapy work through an invisible common source—the body’s electrical system. He also offers practical ways to protect ourselves in our homes and offices from the hazardous effects of electromagnetic pollution and teaches us how to engage the healing energies of electromagnetism. Dr. Becker’s powerful synthesis reshapes the future of medicine by putting life energy into our medical perspective and enabling us to see the body in its total living environment—the earth’s electromagnetic field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study of Winslow Homer highlights his imagery of the Atlantic world and reveals themes of racial, political, and natural conflict across his career. Long celebrated as the quintessential New England regionalist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910) in fact brushed a much wider canvas, traveling throughout the Atlantic world and frequently engaging in his art with issues of race, imperialism, and the environment. This groundbreaking publication focuses, for the first time, on the watercolors and oil paintings Homer made during visits to Bermuda, Cuba, coastal Florida, and the Bahamas—in particular, The Gulf Stream (1899), an iconic painting long considered the most consequential of his career—revealing a lifelong fascination with struggle and conflict. The book also includes Homer’s depictions of rural life and the sea, in which he grapples with the violence of nature, as well as his Civil War and Reconstruction paintings of the 1860s and 1870s, which explore the unresolved effects of the war on the landscape, soldiers, and the formerly enslaved. Recognizing the artist’s keen ability to distill complex issues in his work, Winslow Homer: Crosscurrents upends popular conceptions and convincingly argues that Homer’s work resonates with the challenges of the present day.

Book excerpt: The term “crosscurrent” is defined as “a current flowing counter to another.” This volume represents crosscurrents in second language acquisition and linguistic theory in several respects. First, although the main currents running between linguistics and second language acquisition have traditionally flowed from theory to application, equally important contributions can be made in the other direction as well. Second, although there is a strong tendency in the field of linguistics to see “theorists” working within formal models of syntax, SLA research can contribute to linguistic theory more broadly defined to include various functional as well as formal models of syntax, theories of phonology, variationist theories of sociolinguists, etc. These assumptions formed the basis for a conference held at Stanford University during the Linguistic Institute there in the summer of 1987. The conference was organized to update the relation between second language acquisition and linguistic theory. This book contains a selection of (mostly revised and updated) papers of this conference and two newly written papers.

Determined to protect Solange, and somehow keep her from being sent back to Haiti, Seychelle becomes obsessed with the forces that nearly killed the girl–and left her speechless with terror. Exploring the hidden world of Florida’s Haitian community, Seychelle realizes that Solange is still in great danger–and that one killer has claimed dozens of lives. With a murderer stalking the child, Seychelle is racing to unravel dangerous truths. But to get the answers she needs, she must return to where it all started: in the waters of the Gulf Stream, where people died for their dreams of freedom– and a man with a machete did the work of the devil himself.

Book excerpt: This controversial book explores one nation’s journey from the margins of history to the centre of the world stage. Tracing the development of the country from its birth in 1947 to the present day, Ziring explores how a country once envisaged as a secular model for the Muslim world has been gripped by a form of radical Islamic fundamentalism. Focusing on the links between what is going on within Pakistan and its relationships with key foreign powers such as the US, this unique account portrays an unstable nation locked in a myriad of struggles.

Book excerpt: Making Waves: Crosscurrents in the Study of Nineteenth-Century Art points the way toward futher appreciation and understanding of an era that still resonates strongly in our contemporary culture. Making Waves: Crosscurrents in the Study of Nineteenth-Century Art honours the life work of Petra ten-Doesschate Chu, who continues to lead the field in the study of the art of the nineteenth century. The twenty-eight essays in this book are authored by some of her many friends, students, and colleagues, including seasoned academics and those at the beginning of their careers; museum professionals and private-sector arts administrators; and American, European, and Chinese scholars. Following Petra Chu's example, and avoiding opaque theoretical language and extended technical analysis, authors present original ideas, based primarily on the study of objects and their documented historical contexts. Though their methodologies are diverse, their purposes are clear and their language straight-forward. The essays thoughtfully and respectfully address the solid reality of the nineteenth century in all of its complex (and sometimes repugnant) sensibilities. They disrupt traditional art historical categories and methodologies, and highlight topics that have been long ignored and overlooked. Making Waves demonstrates, in no uncertain terms, that art historians still have much to say to each other and to their readers, and that nineteenth-century art has only begun to be explored in all its complexity and variety. Laurinda S. Dixon is Professor Emerita of Art History at Syracuse University, New York. Her scholarship considers the intersection of art and science- particularly alchemy, herbalism, medicine, astrology, and music- from the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries. She is the author of many articles, book chapters, and ten books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean Islands have long been an uneasy meeting place among indigenous peoples, white European colonists, and black slave populations. Tense oppositions in Caribbean culture—colonial vs. native, white vs. black, male conqueror vs. female subject—supply powerful themes and spark complex narrative experiments in the fiction of Dominica-born novelist Jean Rhys. In this pathfinding study, Mary Lou Emery focuses on Rhys's handling of these oppositions, using a Caribbean cultural perspective to replace the mainly European aesthetic, moral, and psychological standards that have served to misread and sometimes devalue Rhys's writing. Emery considers all five Rhys novels, beginning with Wide Sargasso Sea as the most explicitly Caribbean in its setting, in its participation in the culminating decades of a West Indian literary naissance, and most importantly, in its subversive transformation of European concepts of character. From a sociocultural perspective, she argues persuasively that the earlier novels—Voyage in the Dark, Quartet, After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie, and Good Morning, Midnight—should be read as emergent Caribbean fiction, written in tense dialogue with European modernism. Building on this thesis, she reveals how the apparent passivity, masochism, or silence of Rhys's female protagonists results from their doubly marginalized status as women and as subject peoples. Also, she explores how Rhys's women seek out alternative identities in dreamed of, magically realized, or chosen communities. These discoveries offer important insights on literary modernism, Caribbean fiction, and the formation of female identity.

Book excerpt: Counter-Current Extraction: An Introduction to the Design and Operation of Counter-Current Extractors provide useful conclusions and results pertaining to counter-current extraction. This book aims to present illustrations of the various mathematical techniques as tools as well as means to an end. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various aspects of the transfer of a single solute between two immiscible phases in counter-current flow. This text then describes all possible factors and obtains their relationship to the extraction factor and number of stages or transfer units. Other chapters consider the flows and concentrations in counter-current forward and back extraction. This book discusses as well the optimization of forward and back extraction using counter-current flow in differential and stagewise extractors. The final chapter deals with further applications of counter-current extractions. Undergraduates and researchers involved in the design and operation of counter-current extractors will find this book useful.
