Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-frames are important structural components that serve many functions throughout the service life of steel I-girder bridges. Under repetitive load cycles caused by heavy truck passages, cross-frames and their connections can be susceptible to load-induced fatigue cracking if not properly designed. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 962: Proposed Modification to AASHTO Cross-Frame Analysis and Design addresses knowledge gaps in an attempt to improve the reliability and economy of cross-frames in steel I-girder bridges and produces quantitatively based methodologies and design guidelines. Appendices B through F provide examples of cross-frame design for a straight bridge and a curved bridge as well as a comprehensive overview of the work completed in Phases I, II, and III of the project. Appendix A, Proposed Modifications to AASHTO LRFD, will be published by AASHTO.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the National Bridge Inventory, the most common type of short-to-medium span highway bridge in the US is the reinforced concrete (RC) slab-on-steel girder bridge with RC abutments and piers, comprising approximately half of Ohio's inventory. For these bridges AASHTO currently offers a number of rating methods each of which is based solely on theoretical and design calculations. These methods are known to result in subjective/conservative ratings, not calibrated against field measurements, and hence possibly not objectively reflecting the realities and impacts of individual bridge condition as well as design details. Visual inspections provide at best qualitative and subjective information on bridge condition which is hard to incorporate into the rating process. One result of this approach is the potentially inefficient management and maintenance practices based on conservative/subjective ratings and inspection reports. In addition, there is the need to understand the true impact design and construction practices have on serviceability and safety of the bridge inventory, something which cannot be explored based on the current approaches.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commonwealth of Virginia is currently transitioning from the long-used AASHTO Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specification to AASHTO's Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specification. The new specification features revised live loads, more conservative impact factors, a new load distribution method for analysis, and a probabilistically based limit state design approach. Traditional deflection limits have been made optional in the LRFD format. The extensive changes in the specification make it unclear as to whether bridges designed using the LRFD specification will be more or less flexible than those designed using the ASD specification. A series of bridges were designed using both ASD and LRFD formats to investigate what, if any, significant changes in bridge flexibility might be encountered and whether deflection limits are more or less likely to be violated with the LRFD format. Based upon the design of six single-span bridges with varying spans and numbers of girders, and a partial design of a three-span continuous bridge, it was concluded that the LRFD designs tend to be lighter and more economical in general and also tend to be more flexible than ASD designs of the same bridge. The weight savings appears to be more pronounced on single-span bridges than on multiple-span bridges because of the greater significance of local and lateral stability concerns in the finished bridges for multi-span bridges.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation bridge design and structural engineers, bridge consultants, and others involved in applied and research methods for increasing the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. The synthesis describes the current state of the practice for the various methods used to increase the live load capacity of existing highway bridges. This is done predominantly for bridges in the short- to medium-span range. Information on the more common bridge material types is presented. There is an emphasis on superstructure rather than substructure strengthening.
