Book Synopsis The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada's International Trade by : D. Peter Dungan
Download or read book The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada's International Trade written by D. Peter Dungan and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses Input-Output analysis to examine the industry and skill mix of Canadian exports and imports as they stood in 1997 and how this mix has changed over the past three decades. Section 2 of the report describes the data and calculation methods used. Section 3 contains a literature review. Section 4 examines how the place of exports has changed in the Canadian economy since 1961, and how the industrial output and employment mix of exports has altered over that time. Changes in the employment mix are decomposed into four main sub-components. Then, adding industry skill-mix data, it discusses the education/skill mix of Canadian exports in recent years and determines what changes may have occurred in this mix over time. Section 5 repeats the analysis in Section 4, but for imports. Section 6 reports the conclusions and main findings. Several appendices present details of the calculations, sensitivity tests and more detailed industrial results.
Book Synopsis Effects of the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement on Interprovincial Trade by : John F. Helliwell
Download or read book Effects of the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement on Interprovincial Trade written by John F. Helliwell and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) on interprovincial trade. It first reviews some previous work on the effects of trading blocs on trade volumes. Section 3 contains aggregate evidence about the links between post-FTA movements in interprovincial trade and province-state trade. Section 4 analyzes new industry-level data designed to show whether the post-FTA changes in trade mix are consistent with interprovincial trade creation, trade diversion, or neither. Finally, Section 5 summarizes the two strands of evidence and sets some objectives for future research.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the corporate response to the major forces driving economic change: the pace of innovation, the emerging global free market economy & the aging of Canada's population. In this environment, firms must enhance their ability to collect & process information so as to create innovations. The document looks at past visions of the future (history does not extrapolate from things past, basic principles of economics, human nature -- self-interest, social animals, conditioning, cognitive dissonance); the difference between fads or facts; a vision of the future corporate world; a primer on the Austrian school of economics (prosperity is built on innovations more than cheap capital or cheap labour, the competition in a capitalist economy is to innovate, the cost of continuous innovation, government's limited freedom of action, basic principles of public policy in an Austrian economy); information as a good with a price (the economics of information & innovation); public policy in an information economy (financing initiatives from small firms, industrial R & D policy, public sector R & D policy, fiscal policy, monetary policy, trade policy); corporation in the global information economy (corporate culture, corporate Canada & emerging markets, demography & the corporation, business-government partnerships); corporate careers in the global information economy (blue-collar employees & labour organizations, white-collar careers, workplace training).

This book was released on 2003 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an empirical analysis of the comparative evolution of interprovincial & international trade and their effects on regional growth for the Canadian provinces since 1981. It first establishes the trend in the relationship between the ratios of interprovincial & international trade to gross domestic product, revealing a sharp break that occurred around 1991. The analysis casts doubt on the pure diversion model often used in trade modelling. The second part uses a conditional convergence-growth model to estimate the respective long-run effects of interprovincial & international trade on Canadian regional economies, specifically in relation to productivity, relative gross domestic product per capita, and job creation. The final chapter discusses implications of the results for regional economies & economic policy issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores what economists know about the economics of innovation. It identifies key empirical research on different aspects of what causes the pace of innovation to be faster or slower. A selective survey of empirical work on the determinants of innovation, guided by relevant economic theory, discusses the economics of information & its relation to innovation; the effects on the pace of innovation of the strength of intellectual property rights, firm size & market structure, geographic distribution of firms, corporate decision-making, national culture, financial systems, human capital accumulation, and checks on inequality; and whether government policy determines innovation.
Book Synopsis Paradoxe Canado-américain de la Croissance de la Productivité by : Serge Coulombe
Download or read book Paradoxe Canado-américain de la Croissance de la Productivité written by Serge Coulombe and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on multifactor productivity (MFP) growth and labour productivity growth produced by Statistics Canada and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics send mixed signals regarding the comparative evolution of living standards in the two countries. Since the early 1980s, Statistics Canada's MFP growth measures for the business sector indicate that the Canadian economy has out-performed the US economy while labour productivity data produce a reverse picture. This is the so-called Canada/US productivity paradox, investigated in this paper with an analysis of Canadian & US business sector productivity data since 1961. The analysis is used to determine whether business sector MFP growth estimates provided by Statistics Canada are consistent over time and comparable to US estimates. The analysis identifies three significant problems with Statistics Canada methodology for estimating MFP growth, and methodological changes are proposed to address these problems.
