Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an original approach to the study of language by linking it to the political and economic contexts of colonialism and capitalism, Heller and McElhinny reinterpret sociolinguistics for a twenty-first-century audience. They map out a critical history of how language serves as a terrain for producing and reproducing social inequalities. The book, organized chronologically, and beginning in the period of colonial expansion in the sixteenth century, covers the development of the modern nation state and then the fascist, communist, and universalist responses to the inequities such nations created. It then moves through the two World Wars and the Cold War that followed, as well as the shift to liberal democracy, the welfare state, and decolonization in the 1960s, ending with the contemporary period, characterized by a globalized economy and neoliberal politics since the 1980s. Throughout, the authors ask how ideas about language get shaped, and by whom, unevenly across sites and periods, offering new perspectives on how to think about language that will both excite and incite further research for years to come.

In no other vernacular language does such a vast store of verbal treasures exist for so extended a period of time. For twenty years the definitive guide to that literature has been Stanley B. Greenfield's 1965 Critical History of Old English Literature. Now this classic has been extensively revised and updated to make it more valuable than ever to both the student and scholar.

Book excerpt: STEPHEN TOULMIN George Santayana used to insist that those who are ignorant of the history of thought are doomed to re-enact it. To this we can add a corollary: that those who are ignorant of the context of ideas are doom ed to misunderstand them. In a few self-contained fields such as pure mathematics, concepts and conceptual systems can perhaps be de tached from their historico-cultural situations; so that (for instance) a self-taught Ramanujan, living alone in India, mastered number theory to a point at which he could make major contributions to European mathematics. But elsewhere the situation is different - and, in philosophy, inevitably so. For philosophical ideas and problems confront us like geological specimens in situ; and, in the act of prising them free from their historical and cultural locations, we can too easily forget about the matrix in which they took shape, and end by impossing on them a sculptural form of our own making. Something of this kind has happened in the case of Ludwig Wittgen stein. For his philosophical work has commonly been seen as an episode in the development, either of mathematicallogic, or oftwentieth-century British philosophy. His associations with Frege and Russell, Moore and Waismann, have over-shadowed everything else in his cultural origins and intellectual concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of German film dealing with individual films as works of art has long been needed. Existing histories tend to treat cinema as an economic rather than an aesthetic phenomenon; earlier surveys that do engage with individual films do not include films of recent decades. This book treats representative films from the beginnings of German film to the present. Providing historical context through an introduction and interchapters preceding the treatments of each era's films, the volume is suitable for semester- or year-long survey courses and for anyone with an interest in German cinema. The films: The Student of Prague - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - The Last Laugh - Metropolis - The Blue Angel - M - Triumph of the Will - The Great Love - The Murderers Are among Us - Sun Seekers - Trace of Stones - The Legend of Paul and Paula - Solo Sunny - The Bridge - Young T rless - Aguirre, The Wrath of God - Germany in Autumn - The Marriage of Maria Braun - The Tin Drum - Marianne and Juliane - Wings of Desire - Maybe, Maybe Not - Rossini - Run Lola Run - Good Bye Lenin - Head On - The Lives of Others Stephen Brockmann is Professor of German at Carnegie Mellon University and past President of the German Studies Assocation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the English language integrates the curriculum of Undergraduation in Languages (Letters) with English in great part of the courses offered in Brazil. It is hoped naively that the discipline, by presenting the official history validated by the English-speaking hegemonic countries ie, a set of deliberately selected socio-historical events and some synchronic cuts that reveal static portrayals of the structure of written language, used by the ruling class, helps the student understand more deeply the present day English. It follows that traditional English-language histories, with little or no sociolinguistic or pragmatic concern, have often been used to validate colonialism and linguistic domination, ideologically inspired by the anglocentrism of the "civilizing language." This picture refers to the need to rethink the teaching of the history of English. Eventually, all the training of teachers of English as a foreign language or as a second language in peripheral countries engendered by the colonialist process such as Brazil must be based on critical, postcolonialist thinking in order to form reflective educators capable of thinking about the importance of the teaching of a foreign language and its political, social and cultural implications.I do not intend to write a definitive critical history of the English language, but I propose to start a discussion about it. The aim of this research is to present a critical perspective in the study of the history of English and to help students and teachers of English as a foreign language to reflect on the History of the English Language and its implications in the current situation of the living language, which is developing every moment and is not crystallized in the past. This can be useful in helping non-native English teachers, students and speakers to consciously insert themselves as subjects in the contemporary history of English, since all variations integrate "global English."By discussing some of the political and cultural aspects of the changes that have taken place in the English language over time, undergraduate students of languages (letters) courses are likely to develop a critical view of the history of the language they are learning now and in the future will surely teach. It is hoped that a critical perspective will help to prevent them from reproducing linguistic prejudice.
