Book Synopsis Manuscripts, Texts, Theology by : David C. Parker
Download or read book Manuscripts, Texts, Theology written by David C. Parker and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David C. Parker is one of the world’s foremost specialists in the study of the New Testament text and of Greek and Latin manuscripts. In addition to editions, monographs and more popular writings, he has published many articles on different aspects of textual criticism. This volume brings together twentyfive of them in a revised and updated version. The collection is divided into three topics. The first deals with manuscript studies. As well as three very different studies of Codex Bezae, there are articles and reports on individual manuscripts and classes of manuscripts and reports on visits to libraries. The second section has the theme of textual criticism. It includes broader studies dealing with the theory of the discipline and more detailed discussions of particular problems, including translations into Latin, techniques for grouping Greek manuscripts, and the comparison of modern editions. The third section contains papers in which Parker has discussed the often overlooked relationship between textual criticism and theology. These studies explore particular textual problems and their wider significance, and cover topics as varied as “Jesus and Textual Criticism”, “Calvin’s Biblical Text” and “The Early Tradition of Jesus’ Sayings on Divorce”.
Book Synopsis But It Is Not So Among You by : Alberto de Mingo Kaminouchi
Download or read book But It Is Not So Among You written by Alberto de Mingo Kaminouchi and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power is an issue that is attracting increased interest among philosophers, theologians and social scientists. The gospel of Mark, especially in 10:32-45, contains teachings attributed to Jesus about the use and abuse of power. This book applies a combination of different methods and approaches: mainly orality, criticism, literary criticism and a sensitivity for the social and cultural environment of the text, showing the centrality of Jesus's message on the issue of power both for the plot and for the theology of Mark. This message is a call to practice leadership in a way that is subversive toward the networks of power of the empire.

Book Synopsis Text-critical Methodology and the Pre-Caesarean Text by : Larry W. Hurtado
Download or read book Text-critical Methodology and the Pre-Caesarean Text written by Larry W. Hurtado and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1981 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. This monograph is a detailed examination of the textual characteristics and relationships of important early Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of Mark (chiefly Codex Washingtonianus [W, and also Family 13 and P45), and challenges the generally accepted view that these manuscripts are witnesses to an early stage of the Ceasarean text-type. The study begins with a discussion and critique of previous studies on the Caesarean text-type, showing the methodological weaknesses that demand a fresh analysis of the data and emphasizing the crucial importance of Codex W for the whole question of the textual history of Mark. Then a methodological approach is set forth, involving both careful quantitative measurement of manuscript agreements and detailed analysis of variants in the interest of determining both the textual relationships and textual character of manuscripts. When this more sophisticated approach is applied to the chief witnesses to the so-called "pre-Ceasarean" text of Mark, it is confirmed that W and P45 do show a significant relationship with each other and that Family 13 is a weaker member of the same group. However, the commonly held view that these witnesses reflect the early stage of the Caesarean text-type is shown to be erroneous. In addition to clarifying the textual relationships of the witnesses, the study defines more accurately their textual character, showing the scribal purposes reflected in the variants that characterize these manuscripts and adding considerably to our knowledge of the forces affecting the early transmission of the text of Mark. This is the first detailed examination of the Markan text of Codex W since the publication of the manuscript and the first published book-length study dealing with the Ceasarean text of Mark since the initial work of Kirsopp Lake and his colleagues Blake and New. This work not only addresses a major issue in the textual history of Mark, but offers methodological suggestions for the continuing investigation of the textual history of the New Testament.
Book Synopsis Scribal Harmonization in the Synoptic Gospels by : Cambry Pardee
Download or read book Scribal Harmonization in the Synoptic Gospels written by Cambry Pardee and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Scribal Harmonization Cambry G. Pardee examines the earliest Greek manuscripts of the Synoptic Gospels for evidence that scribes altered the text of the Gospels—either deliberately or inadvertently—in ways that eliminated discrepancies between them. The phenomenon of harmonization demonstrates that a scribe’s memories of previous experiences with gospel traditions could have a powerful effect on the manuscripts that they produced. This book assembles for the first time a catalogue of harmonizing variants from every manuscript of Matthew, Mark, and Luke from the fourth century and earlier. Far from reducing the unique voices of the individual evangelists to a single melody, the earliest scribes contributed new tones, innovative strains, and fascinating harmonies to the four-fold gospel tradition.
Book Synopsis The Freer Biblical Manuscripts by : Larry W. Hurtado
Download or read book The Freer Biblical Manuscripts written by Larry W. Hurtado and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six biblical manuscripts that reside in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington DC are historically significant artifacts for tracing the early history of the transmission of the writings that make up the New Testament and the Septuagint. The manuscripts, all purchased in Egypt at the beginning of the twentieth century by Charles Freer, date to the third through fifth centuries and include codices of the four Gospels, Deuteronomy and Joshua, the Psalms, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as a Coptic codex of the Psalms and a papyrus codex of the Minor Prophets, which, until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, was the earliest Greek manuscript of the Minor Prophets known. The ten essays in this volume are a notable collection of fresh scholarship with long-term value for the study of what is a small but highly valuable treasure trove of biblical manuscripts. The contributors are Malcolm Choat, Kent D. Clarke, Kristin De Troyer, Timothy J. Finney, Dennis Haugh, Larry W. Hurtado, J. Bruce Prior, Jean-Francois Racine, James R. Royse, Ulrich Schmid, and Thomas A. Wayment. Book jacket.
