Book excerpt: “The Dorothy Parker of detective fiction” (William Ruehlmann) ghostwrites for silver-screen sleuth George Sanders in this “thriller with laughs on the side”(New York Herald-Tribune). The snarky and debonair actor George Sanders (who would go on to win an Academy Award for his performance in All About Eve) has had enough of playing a B-movie detective in the Falcon film series. He’s thrilled to land a role against type in an epic historical adventure opposite the hottest bombshell in Hollywood. Then, as the shooting begins . . . the shooting begins. During an all-too-authentic action scene, a background sap in a glue-on beard takes a real bullet. A tragic accident, or something more sinister? Everyone now expects the big-screen sleuth to draw on his detection skills. But those murders were scripted. Being a pro, he’s tempted to improvise—especially when he learns the victim was much more than some hapless extra. Unfortunately, the slug is traced back to Sanders’s gun, a key reel of evidence disappears, and the gentleman rogue himself becomes the star suspect. For Sanders, finding the real culprit in a world of illusion is going to be the most exacting performance of his life—right up until the killer fadeout. Having written two films in the Falcon series—The Falcon’s Brother and The Falcon in Danger—Craig Rice was a natural ghostwriter for capturing George Sanders’s trademark tone, a stiff dry cocktail of snark and sophistication. The result? “Lots of fun” (The New York Times).

For Charlotte, posing as the town psychic has never been easier. Thanks to helping the cops solve the mystery of the Castle Cove Bandit, “Ruby” has become a beloved fixture in the sleepy Oregon beach town. Her sister, Paige, is flourishing now that she’s not being yanked from one con job to the next. And both sisters are discovering what it means to be part of a community, rather than preying on one. But wherever Charlotte and Paige go, crime is sure to follow. Someone has been breaking into homes and vandalizing their contents, including Ruby’s Readings and Cosmic Shop. Charlotte doesn’t want to get involved and risk their newfound stability, especially since it’s only two more months until the real Ruby returns. But when a phone call from their estranged parents breaks up their happy routine, the sisters realize they have even less time in Castle Cove than they thought. Charlotte’s already had to distance herself from Deputy Jared once—a criminal in a cop’s bed never ends well. But this officer of the law isn’t giving up the chase. The closer he gets, the sooner the jig is up, and if Charlotte doesn’t give him the slip now, she may lose Paige forever. THIS IS NOT A STAND ALONE NOVEL--IT IS BOOK TWO IN A THREE BOOK SERIES AND ENDS IN A CLIFFHANGER

Book Synopsis Impact of Organized Crime on Murder of Law Enforcement Personnel at the U.S.-Mexican Border by : Sara Schatz
Download or read book Impact of Organized Crime on Murder of Law Enforcement Personnel at the U.S.-Mexican Border written by Sara Schatz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief fills a gap in the studies of organized crime in Mexico (Kan 2012, Ríos 2011, Dell 2011) by documenting and mapping the post-2008 assassination of Mexican border police chiefs. It traces out a “systematic” of law-enforcement assassination in Northern Tier Mexico, showing how the selective, often sequential, hits by cartels on chiefs in border towns and along key drug-trafficking corridors has proven an effective strategy by organized crime elements to serve several goals: (1) to retaliate for federal, state and local prosecution, (2) to try and neutralize police chiefs, (3) to achieve intermittent local governance and/or to seed corrupt police chiefs at the municipal level, and, (4) to reduce local governmental capacity to obtain greater freedom for movement of goods. It is argued that the tactical advantage of organized crime elements gives them relatively easy physical access to law enforcement targets and thus is thus one prime element facilitating the use of assassination as a strategy. U.S. and Mexican legal, political and judicial institutions have not been able to adequately restrict opportunity for law-enforcement assassinations. The inability to reduce access to weapons and officials, to increase security for police personnel, to reduce corruption and punish offenders sets the stage for the assassination of local law enforcement. Yet, it is the goals of organized crime elements (to clear drug-smuggling routes and to try and gain more pliant governance at the municipal level) that ultimately motivate such killings.

Download or read book Hate Crime in the Media written by Victoria Munro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful, uncompromising explanation of how subtle sources of hatred contained throughout our media and culture have resulted in a tolerance for hate crimes in America. How is hate engendered, and what causes hatred to manifest as criminal behavior? Hate Crime in the Media: A History considers how in America, perceived threats on national, physical, and/or personal space have been created by mediated understandings of different peoples, and describes how these understandings have then played out in hate crimes based on ethnicity, religious identity, or sexual identity. The work reveals the origins of hate in American culture found in the media; political rhetoric; the entertainment industry, including national sports; and the legal system. Each chapter addresses historical questions of representation and documents the response to those considered intruders. The book also examines trends in hate crimes, the resulting changes in our legal code, and the specific victims of hate crimes.

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study of legal and literary narratives argues that the novel's particular power to represent the interior life of its characters both challenges the law's definitions of criminal responsibility and reaffirms them. By means of connecting major novelists with prominent jurists and legal historians of the era, it offers profound new ways of thinking about the Victorian period.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of White-Collar and Corporate Crime in Europe by : Judith van Erp
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of White-Collar and Corporate Crime in Europe written by Judith van Erp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of white-collar crime remains a central concern for criminologists around the world and research concentrates on its nature, prevalence, causes and responses. However, most books on white-collar crime tend to focus on Anglo-American examples, which is surprising given the amount of rich data and research taking place in mainland Europe. This new handbook seeks to reset the balance and, for the first time, presents an overview of state-of-the-art research on white-collar crime in Europe. Adding to the existing Anglo-American body of knowledge, the Handbook will discuss specific European topics and typical European features of white-collar crime. The Routledge Handbook of White-Collar and Corporate Crime in Europe consists of more than thirty chapters on topics ranging from the Icelandic Banking Crisis, to the origins of the study of white collar crime, to contemporary topics, such as white-collar crime in countries post-transition from communist regimes; the illegal e-waste trade and white-collar crime in professional football. Furthermore, the book contains extensive case study analyses of landmark European cases of white-collar crime. The editors have gathered together the leading voices in the field and a final section offers commentaries on white-collar crime in Europe from eminent criminologists David Friedrichs and Hazel Croall. This Handbook will thus serve as a work of reference for all scholars and students engaged in the study of corporate and white-collar crime and will also set out directions for new research in the future.
