Diodoros Siculus records the boast of the Cretans that most of the gods worshipped among men went from Crete to other lands, citing in particular, Zeus, Demeter, Aphrodite, Artemis and Apollo1 he notes also the claim that the mysteries had their origin among them and were communicated to Greece through their agency.' The Cretans undoubtedly overstated the case, even where the Greek gods are concerned. It is, however, undeniable that a certain element of truth lurks behind many of these traditions.
