Book Synopsis A Sterner Plan for Italian Unity by : Raymond Grew
Download or read book A Sterner Plan for Italian Unity written by Raymond Grew and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy in 1850 was a politically weak and divided country. The revolutionary spirit of 1848 had faded; much of the country was again under foreign control. Her political leaders were in exile, but they could not dismiss their dreams of a united Italy. Raymond Grew, in his account of the Italian National Society, shows the part that the Society had in realizing these dreams, and presents fresh material on the climactic years of the Risorgimento—who participated in it, what issues were involved, and how unification was accomplished. Drawing upon unpublished materials from archives and libraries throughout Europe, the author presents a comprehensive picture of the social, political, and intellectual climate of the period in which Italy became a nation. Originally published in 1963. Book Synopsis What Is a Nation? by : Timothy Baycroft
Download or read book What Is a Nation? written by Timothy Baycroft and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyses and compares different forms of nationalism across a range of European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. It aims to put detailed studies of nationalist politics and thought, which have proliferated over the last ten years or so, into a wider European context. By means of such contextualization, together with new and systematic comparisons, What is a Nation? Europe 1789-1914 reassesses the arguments put forward in the principal works on nationalism as a whole, many of which pre-date the proliferation of case studies in the 1990s and which, as a consequence, make only inadequate reference to the national histories of European states. The study reconsiders whether the distinction between civic and ethnic identities and politics in Europe has been overstated and whether it needs to be replaced altogether by a new set of concepts or types. What is a Nation? explores the relationship between this and other typologies, relating them to complex processes of industrialization, increasing state intervention, secularization, democratization and urbanization. Debates about citizenship, political economy, liberal institutions, socialism, empire, changes in the states system, Darwinism, high and popular culture, Romanticism and Christianity all affected - and were affected by - discussion of nationhood and nationalist politics. The volume investigates the significance of such controversies and institutional changes for the history of modern nationalism, as it was defined in diverse European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. By placing particular nineteenth-century nationalist movements and nation-building in a broader comparative context, prominent historians of particular European states give an original and authoritative reassessment, designed to appeal to students and academic readers alike, of one of the most contentious topics of the modern period.

Book Synopsis Classical Sociology Beyond Methodological Nationalism by :
Download or read book Classical Sociology Beyond Methodological Nationalism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Sociology Beyond Methodological Nationalism defends classical sociology from the accusation of ‘methodological nationalism’. To reject such accusation, the volume presents three arguments. The first contends that classical sociology has not failed to deal with the global world (Part I). The second, that classical sociology has more frequently dealt with the transnational category of the ‘social’, rather than with the ‘national’ (Part II). The third, that where classical sociology has analysed national society, the latter has never been envisaged as a rigidly confined entity within its political boundaries (Part III). The outcome is a re-evaluation of classical sociological thought as a more functional tool for analysing the political forms of modernity in the era of globalisation. Contributors include: Vittorio Cotesta, David Inglis, Austin Harrington, Massimo Pendenza, Michael Schillmeier, Emanuela Susca, Dario Verderame, and Federico Trocini.
