Book excerpt: From a cofounder of Jivamukti Yoga, a guide to how the spiritual practice of yoga enriches both planetary and personal health—includes vegan recipes. In this book, the co-creator of the Jivamukti Yoga method explores the intersection between the spiritual practice of yoga, physical health, care for the planet, and a peaceful coexistence with other animals and nature. Through clear and accessible language, Sharon Gannon unpacks the wisdom of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, one of the oldest and most revered texts focused on the philosophy of yoga, and draws a fascinating course to greater enlightenment for the contemporary practitioner. With yama, or restraint, the Yoga Sutras outline the first step on the path to spiritual liberation through five ethical principles that help guide our relationships with the world around us: Ahimsa teaches us how to avoid personal suffering through not harming others, while satya reveals how telling the truth allows us to be better listened to. Through asteya, or nonstealing, we learn the secret of wealth. Brahmacharya reveals how refraining from sexual misconduct leads to health and vitality, and finally, aparigraha opens our eyes to the ways in which greed holds us back from true happiness and is destroying the planet. Yoga and Veganism shines a light on these five guiding principles, demonstrating how the practice of yoga is tied to an ethical vegan lifestyle, which opens the path to both physical wellness and spiritual enlightenment. Featuring a selection of delicious recipes from the author along with personal essays from individuals whose lives have been transformed by veganism—including filmmaker Kip Andersen (Cowspiracy) and Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA—Yoga and Veganism provides a framework for yoga students and teachers looking to bring their asana practice into alignment with the philosophy at the heart of the discipline, as well as with the Earth around them and all of the beings within it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel of a British woman’s decision to ditch her job and devote herself to yoga is “drolly funny...a winning depiction of a modern spiritual quest” (Kirkus Reviews). Grace is a pharmaceutical rep, making good money visiting doctors to pitch her company’s latantidepressant, a job that’s been getting sort of...depressing. So is her long-term relationship, which has been slowly fizzling out. The one thing that makes her feel better, that allows her to transcend her unsatisfying life, is yoga class. Then, inspired by a conversation with Dr. James, a physician interested in Eastern medicine, Grace decides to pursue a new path as a yoga teacher. After a trip to California to study at the White Lotus Foundation, she returns to London to start her new life. But teacher training did not prepare her for the motley crew of students she encounters—the octogenarian industrialist desperate for distraction; the supermodel who indulges yogic aspirations when she tires of kabbalah; the American film star who uses yoga classes to conceal a scandalous affair. Her one solace comes from her correspondence with Dr. James—now in Vietnam on a quest of his own. Both inspiring and hilarious, The Yoga Teacher gently skewers our preference for a quick-fix nirvana over the rigor of practice—as it follows one woman’s search for love and meaning in a world numbed by materialism and psychotropic drugs. “Gray portrays the world of Westernized yoga, from its true disciples to spandex-wrapped poseurs, in this uplifting tale of starting over...an inspiration for anyone who’s ever yearned to pursue a dream.”—Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creatures of Attention excavates the early modern prehistory of our late modern crises of attention. At the threshold of modernity, philosophers, scientists, and poets across Europe began to see attention as the key to autonomous agency and knowledge. Recovering the philosophical and literary works from eighteenth-century Germany in which "attention," "subject," and "aesthetics" developed their modern meanings, Johannes Wankhammer examines control over attention as the cultural technique underpinning the ideal of individual autonomy. Aesthetics, founded by Alexander Baumgarten as a science of sense perception, challenged this ideal by reframing art as a catalyst for alternative modes of selfhood and attention. While previous scholarship on the history of attention emphasized the erosion of subjectivity by industrial or technological modernization, Wankhammer asks how attention came to define subjectivity in the first place. When periodically recurring crises of attention threaten the coherence of the subject, the subject comes undone at the very seams that first sutured it together. Creatures of Attention offers the first systematic study of a foundational discourse on attention from 1650 to 1780. Presenting pre-Kantian aesthetics as a critique of the Enlightenment paradigm of strained attention, the book offers a fresh perspective on poetics and aesthetics in eighteenth-century Germany.

Interspersing snatches of conversations, letters, blog entries and clinical notes with intimate poetic narrative, Cull evokes an accessible experience of mental illness. In The Death of Small Creatures, Cull strives to cope with her hopelessness. She finds comfort in the company of her two pet rabbits until one of them dies as a result of her lethargy. She numbs herself with alcohol. She validates her self-worth by seeking the love of men—any and all men—and three relationships significantly impact her life: her marriage to Leigh, a much older man; her unrequited love for Dr. P, her therapist; and her healthier relationship with Richard, an American she meets through her blog. She tries drugs—Neo Citran, Ativan, Wellbutrin, crack, crystal meth—and after two hospitalizations, she undergoes electroconvulsive therapy. Haunting and expressive, this immersive memoir explores love in all its facets—needy, obsessive, healthy, self-directed—and plunges the reader headlong into the intense and immediate experience of mental illness.

This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoology is a subfield of biology that focuses on the study of different species within the animal kingdom as well as animal life in general. Both the study of individual animals and their component components, down to the molecular level, as well as the study of animal populations, whole faunas, and the interactions of animals with one another, plants, and the nonliving environment, are included in this field of study. The conceptual integration that has taken place in the contemporary study of living things over the past few years has placed more of an emphasis on the structural and functional unity of life rather than on the diversity of life. Although this wide range of studies does result in some specialities within zoology being isolated from one another. The term "fauna" refers to all of the many kinds of animal species that inhabit a certain area at a particular period. Flora is the word used to refer to plant life, whereas funga is the word used to refer to fungal life. The term "biota" refers to all kinds of life, including flora, fauna, funga, and any other forms of life. The term "fauna" is used by zoologists and palaeontologists to refer to the usual collection of creatures that may be found in a certain period or location. For example, "Sonoran Desert fauna" or "Burgess Shale fauna" are both examples of this term. Palaeontologists will often speak of a succession of faunal stages, which is a series of rocks that all contain the same kinds of fossils at the same period. The field of study known as faunistic examines creatures native to a given area. The distribution of animals on earth may be broken down into three categories: land, water, and time. The first two categories are dispersed in space, while the third category is distributed in time. Many things regarding the animals, their distribution and so many other things are discussed in detail across the many chapters and topics that are included in this book. The author of this book decided to include the material that is presently contained inside it after doing a significant amount of research on the topic. All of the content that is included in this book was supplied by the authors of the book after they had a substantial amount of discussion on the topics presented. The reader will be able to get a deeper comprehension of each of the chapters thanks to the wealth of information that is provided in this book.
