Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manhattan Project—the World War II race to produce an atomic bomb—transformed the entire country in myriad ways, but it did not affect each region equally. Acting on an enduring perception of the American West as an “empty” place, the U.S. government located a disproportionate number of nuclear facilities—particularly the ones most likely to spread pollution—in western states. The Manhattan Project manufactured plutonium at Hanford, Washington; designed and assembled bombs at Los Alamos, New Mexico; and detonated the world’s first atomic bomb at Alamagordo, New Mexico, on June 16, 1945. In the years that followed the war, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission selected additional western sites for its work. Many westerners initially welcomed the atom. Like federal officials, they, too, regarded their region as “empty,” or underdeveloped. Facilities to make, test, and base atomic weapons, sites to store nuclear waste, and even nuclear power plants were regarded as assets. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, regional attitudes began to change. At a variety of locales, ranging from Eskimo Alaska to Mormon Utah, westerners devoted themselves to resisting the atom and its effects on their environments and communities. Just as the atomic age had dawned in the American West, so its artificial sun began to set there. The Atomic West brings together contributions from several disciplines to explore the impact on the West of the development of atomic power from wartime secrecy and initial postwar enthusiasm to public doubts and protest in the 1970s and 1980s. An impressive example of the benefits of interdisciplinary studies on complex topics, The Atomic West advances our understanding of both regional history and the history of science, and does so with human communities as a significant focal point. The book will be of special interest to students and experts on the American West, environmental history, and the history of science and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances an integrative approach to understanding the phenomenon of psychosocial maturation. Through a rigorous, dialectically-informed interpretation of psychoanalytic and humanistic-existential-phenomenological sources, Mufid James Hannush distils thirty essential markers of maturity. The dialectical approach is described as a process whereby lived, affect-and-value laden polar meanings are transformed, through deep insight, into complementary and integrative meta-meanings. The author demonstrates how responding to the call of maturation can be viewed as a life project that serves the ultimate purpose of living a balanced life. The book will appeal to students and scholars of human development, psychotherapy, social work, philosophy, and existential, humanistic, and phenomenological psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book of knowledge is useless without wisdom: The Bible Work, worship and wisdom lead to meditation: The Bhagavad Gita An unclear mind leads to sorrow: Gautama Buddha Man alone attains perfection, not even the gods: Vivekananda Human beings want abundance in wealth, health, peace of mind, relationships and sleep. Most of them get poverty, disease and misery. Why is there so much difference between the aspirations and actual rewards of human beings? There is a very simple reason for it. Human beings have not achieved abundance, despite its repeated mention in the Holy Scriptures, because they use their minds very poorly. They are obsessed with words like heart and knowledge. Both these have limited value. Heart only pumps blood. Knowledge is a range of information. This may be useful and useless. Human beings need creativity and wisdom to achieve abundance. The book in your hand provides solutions to human misery. It is a biography of Dr R D Mohota, who has the answers to lead you to achieve abundance. He has chosen the classroom to achieve this. There are two very important reasons for his choice. One, nearly twenty-five per cent of humanity is in the classroom. Second, education is the best way to make human minds creative and wise. Dr R D Mohota has invented a revolutionary teaching technique which achieves all of the above. Millions of students have been upgraded through it. Read this books and you may take a giant step in achieving abundance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how creative ways of resolving social conflicts emerge, evolve, and subsequently come to be accepted or rejected in inter-group relations. Creativity and Conflict Resolution explores a subject with which political communities involved in social conflict have always grappled: creative ways of imagining and actualizing visions of conflict resolution. This is an ambitious question, which concerns human communities at many different levels, from families, regional-independence movements, and national governments, to inter-state alliances. The author argues that unconventional viability lies at the heart of creativity for transcending seemingly intractable inter-communal conflicts. More specifically, conflict resolution creativity is a social and epistemological process, whereby actors involved in a given social conflict learn to formulate an unconventional resolution option or procedure. Demystifying the origin of unthinkable breakthroughs for conflict resolution and illuminating theories of creativity based on 17 international case studies, this book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, human security and IR. Tatsushi Arai is an Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Transformation at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont, USA. He has a PhD in Conflict Resolution from George Mason University, Washington DC, and extensive practical experience in the field.
